pixelbash··on Making money building Shopify micro-SaaS apps
Shopify doesn't seem to do this, and actually it's a bit of a problem because some of the apps have the craziest workaround for gaps in the backend.

Can't have multiple discounts in the cart? Splution: create custom discount codes on the fly for absolutely everyone in real-time.

pixelbash··on Telegram messaging app proves crucial to Belarus protests
I can't tell if you are arguing that the original vote was less likely to be skewed than this one, or just that this one doesn't pass the highest bar that could be set for it.
pixelbash··on Ultralight lithium-sulfur batteries for electric airplanes
Those applications generally haven't been focused on putting ridiculous horsepower in a tiny format and then running a highly variable load while dissipating heat.

For example Axial flux motors are still very much being developed with a steady flow of breakthroughs (Magnax, Emrax), and have mind bending power to weight ratios. A lot of the current issues seem to be around heat dissipation, which is where I am hoping some of the next big wins are.

I'm a bit sad that currently easily available motors are currently not in the same league as Tesla (I have a 50kw Me1616 and Sevcon 4 sitting on my bench) but it looks like that is slowly changing.

> ICEs are real technology

They are real technology, in the sense that this is where over 100 years of optimising every aspect of ICE has got us to. Fascinatingly complex, extremely well engineered, and depending on the brand still relatively likely to break down within the first few years.

The engines are also longer designed to be maintained without special processes, and are increasingly designed around emission regulations. To the point where a lot of the complexity is in emission systems and the cars are choked by their own extremely lean fuel maps.

Electric motors on the other hand are still relatively unoptimised and the potential in things like torque vectoring is amazing. I'll miss driving manual, but it's getting just about impossible to buy those now anyway.

pixelbash··on A bike shop should choose its customer wisely
> And you better be 100% certain of each customer's lifetime value, otherwise you'll have a problem.

This resonates with me. When i was younger I used to get ignored a lot at certain kinds of store. Now I have more money I still avoid them on principal.

pixelbash··on Microsoft President: We Need a Hippocratic Oath for Software Engineers
This argument is more akin to saying its the builders responsibility to decide whether a bad architectural decision should be built or not. They might bring it up, but it's not really expected that they get to decide.
pixelbash··on People work longer and different hours under lockdown
Running red lights, getting stuck in intersections, doing 20kmh under the speed limit in the fast lane, drifting between lanes without indicating or looking first, speeding when there's an overtaking lane and then slowing back down when it's finished. The usual.
pixelbash··on People work longer and different hours under lockdown
I would consider myself a car person, it has always saddened me when I see very expensive cars being driven badly by people that don't actually care about driving.
pixelbash··on Ask HN: What are the most interesting things in tech lately?
It needs to get to the point where reading text in vr is comfortable, probably
pixelbash··on A College Degree Is No Guarantee of a Good Life
This is a viewpoint centered around seeing art as a commodity. To me that's like saying we only need so many scientists. Is perceived value the best metric?
pixelbash··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
Even moving somewhere else within the same city is a lot less hassle if you are less concerned with immediately having the work part of the equation figured out.

I am not a young graduate, uprooting now would be a big deal for various reasons. Neither are my friends in their 30's raising families - some of which are living with their parents for the kind of reasons you describe.

My point is that without being so close to the financial edge all the time, even less well off families can take a step back and make decisions that work best for the future. The stress associated with risk (like quitting a job) results in a scary amount of lock in for many people I know.

pixelbash··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
It is if you don't have to live somewhere specific to earn enough money to pay rent.
pixelbash··on Dividing front end from back end is an antipattern
I'm sort of from the middle but have recently been more frontend by dint of doing a lot of frontend. We are a design studio so getting design right is also pretty key. That said I built and maintain a large RoR ecom app with heavy customisation and a purpose built integration framework written in node.. and I enjoy it just as much, even if I might not be as expert tier as someone who does nothing else. All of one would be boring for me, do what makes you happy.
pixelbash··on Amazon met with startups about investing, then launched competing products
Isn't the important factor whether it's trying to become one? Windows and IE were never the only possible options.
pixelbash··on Coronavirus: Oxford vaccine triggers immune response
It seems like there's a real chance everyone will be exposed to this pandemic sooner or later. My take is calculate the risks and act accordingly. Arguing moral priors first and statistics second is best reserved for when people aren't already dying in droves.
pixelbash··on After Quarantine, 28% of People Report Feeling Overwhelmed by Driving
Auckland, NZ
pixelbash··on Who’s behind Wednesday’s epic Twitter hack?
Because doxxing as a strategy has a nasty habit of ruining the lives of people that turn out to be innocent. Skipping legal process and all that.
pixelbash··on After Quarantine, 28% of People Report Feeling Overwhelmed by Driving
We had a couple of months of that, and now not only is traffic back up to the same density as before, it also feels like a fair number are driving just a little bit worse. It could be my imagination though..
pixelbash··on Ask HN: What makes a good technical leader – any recommended books?
"Had to" usually implies coercion of a sort. Like you might say "in PE class we had to stand on one leg for 10 minutes".
pixelbash··on Ask HN: What makes a good technical leader – any recommended books?
Forcing people to sleep in the office asa strategy to fix a complex system is surely a sign that someone was not thinking about context?
pixelbash··on A/B Street: A simulation game to fix Seattle's traffic
I've seen a few interfaces with this issue now, another one being ultimaker cura (might be fixed in a current version) and the occasional game. Every time has been with scaling on, and always seems to move the clickbox down and to the right. Would love to know what causes it.
pixelbash··on Habits of High-Functioning Teams
This makes little sense in context. Whether or not someone finds something desirable doesn't matter if their experience is that it doesn't happen in practise. It's hard to unlearn painful lessons in trust.
pixelbash··on MS Flight Simulator vs. Real Life
Still have very find memories of exploring, have been waiting ever since for another realistic open world game based in London.
pixelbash··on Road safety: Motorists using touchscreens in cars are being distracted
> The biggest advantage of touch screens is that they are infinitely reconfigurable

Not sure I buy this line of thought. A computer keyboard is an example of an infinitely configurable physical interface

pixelbash··on Tackling Webdev as a Bioinformatician: why is it so hard?
Oh I agree, my current preferred way to use Rails is as an API with no frontend at all.
pixelbash··on Tackling Webdev as a Bioinformatician: why is it so hard?
Is anyone still using bower?

Also webpacker for rails is somehow both insanely complex and alright to use.

pixelbash··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
We can have travellers from anywhere, they will just need to accept two weeks quarantine. It's not perfect but it's better than no travel at all.
pixelbash··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
Because if we do that now hopefully we won't have to do it again.
pixelbash··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
Not many mountains here in Auckland, lots of volcanoes plus one major (and often choked) road in and out though.
pixelbash··on New Zealand PM: No open borders for 'a long time'
We (NZ) had -1 new cases a couple of days ago, it's working pretty well.
