pixelbash··on Gmail AI hallucinates, distorts email contents
Wouldn't that turn out to be a candle in a hurricane situation given the level of risk involved?
pixelbash··on OpenAI's new "Orion" model reportedly shows small gains over GPT-4
I suspect it’s more the end of an avenue than the end of the road, but it sure seems like throwing more data and compute is hitting diminishing returns on existing methods.
pixelbash··on [dead]
Relatively uneventfully is doing a lot of heavy lifting there
pixelbash··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
> when it was clear they were playing us comp-wise by lowballing us to get their foot in the door & then raising the bar once the offer came. Isn’t this just the mirror of a relatively common business practise? At least among smaller companies (maybe non US)
pixelbash··on UFOs: What we learned from NASA's public meeting
True signal meaning something that invites further research I guess
pixelbash··on Octopuses are building small “cities” off the coast of Australia (2017)
I don’t wish crippling anxiety on every other species
pixelbash··on Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
How is anyone to say what most of the activity of these agencies are without any oversight. That’s why the leaks happened in the first place, it was the only way to say ‘hey we need more controls on this stuff’. Unless you’re suggesting that was going to happen anyway somehow?
pixelbash··on 'It's where the industry is heading': LibreOffice is working on WebAssembly port
This is going to be interesting for apps obeying desktop ui settings. But running any software on any platform might make up for it.
pixelbash··on 50 Years Ago, Sugar Industry Quietly Paid Scientists to Blame Fat (2016)
I suspect while that might be true initially people would soon get really quite good at it.
pixelbash··on Just Launch the Damn Thing
I've recently started thinking of businesses in similar terms to core game loops. Deep in the guts of every successful business there is one (or more) loops that keep the rest going. When I next try something i'll start with the loop.
pixelbash··on Why do we dream? A new theory on how it protects our brains
Anecdotally some b6/b12 supplements have given both me and my partner very intense dreams and vivid recall. No idea what the mechanism might be (Or if it's a preservative/etc) but potentially an interesting data point?
pixelbash··on Photocatalyst splits water into H and O2 at quantum efficiency near 100%
I can see charging being built directly into parking buildings/apartment carparks and factored into the parking cost. Would be pretty convenient always being fully charged when setting out.

At this stage parking buildings have maybe 4 chargers but 1 is out of order and the other 3 are in use. But that's a scaling issue.

Will be interesting when parking buildings start drawing megawatts overnight though.

pixelbash··on In 'Cyberpunk 2077,' the Only Truly Punk Move Is Not to Play
The Culture series by Iain M. Banks is like this, but perhaps set a little far into the future to be easily translated into games or movies.
pixelbash··on Caltech Awards 10,000th PhD Degree
Personal observation - assuming everyone is out to get everyone else is a cultural thing that wasnt such a concern until quite recently. It's a bit like looking at certain phrases in common use 70 years ago and wondering why anyone would use them.
pixelbash··on Gig economy companies spent more than $200M to bankroll Proposition 22
Thanks for the clarification, this is essentially what I was querying!
pixelbash··on Gig economy companies spent more than $200M to bankroll Proposition 22
Sorry, are you saying that working a 40 hour week shouldn't earn a living wage if it's a non-specialised skill?
pixelbash··on Drivers react to Tesla’s full self-driving beta release
If it's consistently as good as an average human that's still better than an average human. That's because robots don't get tired, hungover, angry, bored, drunk, or get an eyelash in their eye at a really bad time.
pixelbash··on Snapshots in the Life of a Criminal-Data Analyst
For a second there I wondered what sort of crime a data analyst might get up to.
pixelbash··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
That's fair - however I've been hosting some of these sites since 2014 on bare metal VPS with minimal issues (the occasional upgrade breaking a theme). A lot of WP issues come down to server settings / bad plugins over WP itself. I suspect WP Engine is largely charging that much to support any WP setup no matter how insecure.
pixelbash··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
Putting in a word for Sanity CMS, it's like contentful but more programmatic. It also doesn't need so much of the constant 'publish draft' button clicking.
pixelbash··on WordPress's Matt in debate with Netlify's Matt
I looked into WP Engine recently to see if I could transfer some older client websites, it's eye wateringly expensive!
pixelbash··on Room-Temperature Superconductivity Achieved for the First Time
I'm imagining if superconductors become widely used it will be in small quantities and for their unique properties that cannot be achieved otherwise. Not for minor benefits over alternatives?
pixelbash··on The Apple Watch heart monitor sends too many people to the doctor
> A new device is created that alerts 50% of the US population that they have a condition that needs to be treated. Only 10% of those cases warranted further action.

This just improved the lives of 16 million people. That is not insignificant. And that's assuming 16 million people would have the same condition.

This also might be underestimating the number of false positives doctors already deal with and that these devices may actually lower that number.

pixelbash··on The Apple Watch heart monitor sends too many people to the doctor
> Further, such an influx would have knock-on effects on unrelated patients, whose care would suffer due to the severe lack of resources.

Hypothetically, let's assume over a long period of time new devices are alerting users to possible medical conditions. Those appointments are paid for (I'm guessing). Will that money not fund more availability over time? The supply of doctors is not supposed to be fixed.

pixelbash··on The Apple Watch heart monitor sends too many people to the doctor
> there _are_ devices that can detect conditions that 5% of the population has _and_ have far fewer false positives - X-rays, CT scans, MRI.

Perhaps, but you can't wear one on your wrist and you generally have to be quite sure something is wrong first.

pixelbash··on Social Cooling (2017)
In the context of a system where it's almost impossible to lose money above a certain point and almost impossible to make money below a certain point (edit: without doing something reckless, which often happens).. No this does not make sense to me.
pixelbash··on Over 90% of Indian techies in the US are upper-caste Indians
One example within a couple of weeks of now means that statistically it's more unlikely to be unusual
pixelbash··on Autodesk Fusion 360 becomes almost useless for hobbyists
Rhino also has Grasshopper for parametric/programmable design. The visual code aspect can be a little tedious though.
pixelbash··on How to Hide a Billion Dollars: Three Techniques the Ultrarich Use to Dodge Ex-Sp
Some of the hardest jobs are underpaid, and level of education means less than it used to. Nurses and scientists for example. Partner is a microbiologist PHD graduate and starting salary wouldn't be much different my self taught first coding job - not that getting a job right now is really possible anyway.
pixelbash··on Airline pilots landing at LAX report “a guy in jetpack” flying alongside them
In those cases were you certain what you saw was a motorcycle before realizing otherwise? Or did you wait until you passed to be sure?
