plandis··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
The data shows that in western societies, both mothers and fathers spend more time engaged with their kids than previous generations, not less.
plandis··on We are all living inside of an obscure sci-fi film from 1970
A dictator could also decide the best thing to do is to mercilessly torture you to set an example so society behaves. Better to harm one individual than many, after all. They might even weep for your suffering but will still go through with it.
plandis··on Lula supporters protest against Meta to denounce its 'electoral interference'
It sure is a coincidence that parties in opposition to right wing political movements in different countries keep getting silenced on Meta.

It gives the appearance that Meta is not an impartial platform like they try to claim for regulatory purposes.

plandis··on Zuckerberg's Meta Takes Down No Kings Instagram During Protest Day
If Instagram is not a platform but instead an arbiter of speech they should be held legally liable what is said on the platform.
plandis··on Pi Durable
Even in regular pi there has been a `—-no-builtin-tools` command line arg since April. The SDK has the same functionality.
plandis··on To grieve, or not to grieve?
As long as the state maintains power and control with the threat of violence I don’t see a world where your average citizen has the same quality of life as the billionaire class simply because the wealthy have more power and influence.

If I want to influence policy I need to get a lot of like minded people via grassroots means to have enough say to get my direct elected representatives to consider a policy. If the billionaire class wants to influence policy they will talk about it with elected officials over golf.

Worst case scenario the wealthy can spend money to gain foreign citizenship and move. Your average citizen is mostly stuck with whatever government and laws exist in their current country.

plandis··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
> I don't understand why the ban cannot come into effect immediately.

This is the default in Californias constitution:

> Except as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3) of this subdivision [Article 4, section 8], a statute enacted at a regular session shall go into effect on January 1 next following a 90-day period from the date of enactment of the statute.

There are additional legislative hurdles to enact legislation faster than that.

plandis··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
Who agreed to use AI for this purpose? Hold them accountable for these war crimes.
plandis··on So you want to use OpenRouter?
> The same model will benchmark very differently

This is surprising to me. Does anyone have a definitive answer that accounts for this difference between providers?

Do the benchmarks that Open Router runs not account for the stochastic nature of the models? Do the providers lie about quantization or context window sizing? Does Open Router not take into account variations for a given model?

I could understand latency/cost benchmarks varying but not the actual generated token responses of the models given the exact same model parameters.

plandis··on Dolly Parton has died
Outside of her impact on the music industry she also had an outsized impact on families with young children.

She started a charity called Imagination Library [1] that sends free monthly books to children under six in the US, Canada and even expanded to the UK, Australia, and the Republic of Ireland. I will always be grateful for this.

plandis··on Tracking Costco gas prices
Does it routinely take an hour to get gas at Costco near you?

Even when the lines are at capacity the Costco I go to (north of Seattle in Shoreline), I never wait more than like five minutes.

plandis··on When the shortage is the strategy
Instead of ad hominem, why not read the article and refute? The sources are included.
plandis··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
CONCACAF rejected the proposal too.

Maybe it will be Senegal vs Socceroos?

plandis··on Anatomy of a Frontier Lab Agent Intrusion: A Timeline of the July 2026 Incident
Can’t afford the GPUs to run Kimi to pentest your stuff?

Standup a tempting honeypot and let actual criminals pay to do the work for you.

plandis··on Anatomy of a Frontier Lab Agent Intrusion: A Timeline of the July 2026 Incident
I wonder how current models would handle something like the xz backdoor? Could they perform the social engineering and technical aspects to make something like that happen?
plandis··on Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac
Isn’t this essentially what MoE partially solves with varying levels of accuracy?
plandis··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
How is attacking a random datacenter keeping the Trump administration from attacking Iran?
plandis··on Zig Creator Calls Spade a Spade, Anthropic Blows Smoke
Is there a reason you cannot specify your allocator of choice in Rust? AFAIK, the abstraction exists to do just that.
plandis··on Austria Lobbies EU to Host Anthropic After US Access Curbs
If I was a business owner I’d rather operate under laws that don’t have highly ambiguous definitions of terms that introduces extra risk that is unnecessary in other places.
plandis··on U.S. allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to ‘trusted’ US organizations
> I know which one I'd rather send tokens to.

Do you have access to Mythos? If not the choice has already been made for you.

plandis··on Tesla allegedly in autopilot mode crashes into Texas house, woman killed
The title is misleading and shifts blame from the driver to the machine.

Ultimately the driver is responsible.

Edit: For the folks who seem to think that this is marketed as unsupervised self driving, from Teslas own website it states

“Currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”

plandis··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
I honestly find that quite hard to believe.

Lack of adequate calories and nutrition negatively compound. You lose the ability to focus, you increase your medical risk.

I experienced that in my childhood. It’s terrible. I did very poorly academically when I did not have access to food. It’s astonishing to me how fast my academic performance improved after consistently having access to food.

Saying you would rather put yourself at risk instead of hedge your answer on a minor interview question in order to increase your chances of getting a job offer seems like an issue with prioritization.

plandis··on Not everyone is using AI for everything
You’ve actively made the choice to go hungry instead of hedging your answers during an interview?

I certainly feigned enthusiasm when I was in high school to get an after school job in order to help my family buy food.

plandis··on H.R. 6028 would fundamentally change the U.S. Copyright Office
> Are people worried they're going to start selectively enforcing copyright law?

Yes.

plandis··on Apple Watch for Your Kids
I’m not saying your conclusion is incorrect but the anecdote provided is survivorship bias. My childhood was much the same in the 90s.

There was a case recently where parents were charged with felony involuntary manslaughter, and felony child neglect because they let their 10 and 7 year cross the street unsupervised and a car hit them and the 7 year old died. As a parent if that’s the reality I definitely hesitate to allow my son out unsupervised when he’s a bit older. I can’t imagine losing your son in an accident and then have the state come down on you while you’re still grieving.

plandis··on Incident Report: Railway Blocked by Google Cloud [resolved]
GCP has had outages. From a quick search it looks like they had a global outage less than a year ago:

plandis··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
Who is forcing you to exclusively buy into Apple’s ecosystem?

Are other competitors banned where you live?

plandis··on Michigan 'digital age' bills pulled after privacy concerns raised
A US based non-profit news organization isn’t going to spend money to pay lawyers to ensure they meet a regulatory burden that doesn’t affect their core demographic.
plandis··on I still prefer MCP over skills
I could not agree any less with the author. I don’t want APIs, I want agents to use the same CLI tooling I already use that is locally available. If my agents are using CLI tooling anyways there is no need to add an extra layer via MCP.

I don’t want remote MCP calls, I don’t even want remote models but that’s cost prohibitive.

If I need to call an API, a skill with existing CLI tooling is more than capable.

plandis··on Git commands I run before reading any code
It doesn't seem any more egregious than something like:

`git log --color --graph --pretty=format:'%Cred%h%Creset -%C(yellow)%d%Creset %s %Cgreen(%cr) %C(bold blue)<%an>%Creset' --abbrev-commit --`

Which is something I see a lot of people alias in Git for viewing logs.
