platzhirsch··on Agentic Engineering
"Failure mode" ... bye bye
platzhirsch··on What I'm Hearing About Cognitive Debt (So Far)
Agile fails when folks don't adjust and tailor the process to the specific needs of their team or organization but instead try to cargo cult it.
platzhirsch··on What I'm Hearing About Cognitive Debt (So Far)
Because waterfall software engineering has been so successful, right? ;-)

platzhirsch··on The HTTP Query Method
I might be misunderstanding something, but it seems the issue isn't really about whether GET can technically carry a body. The deeper concern is that HTTP methods have specific meanings, and mixing those signals can causes confusion and it's nice to have this semantic separation.
platzhirsch··on Postgres LISTEN/NOTIFY does not scale
If you want your database to just store bytes, use a key-value store. But SQL gives you schemas and constraints for a reason; they're guardrails for your business logic. Just don’t ask your tables to run the business for you.
platzhirsch··on Making a Wayland Screen Capturing Protocol
"The new screen capture Wayland protocol has been merged! It will unlock neat features such as window capture and better performance. Many thanks to @andriyngvason for pushing this forward!"

platzhirsch··on Never ask a candidate to rate themselves out of 10
I used to have this type of rating on my resume when I started my career. Over 10 years later, I can tell that today it wouldn't communicate anything.

At most you could convey that you're more proficient in language A than language B.

platzhirsch··on Half-Ass It
If I half-ass is, then there's still 33% less for other folks to learn from it.
platzhirsch··on Alacritty – A fast, cross-platform, OpenGL terminal emulator
Loved that one! At least until I discovered tmux and then later on tiled window managers.
platzhirsch··on Alacritty – A fast, cross-platform, OpenGL terminal emulator
Since it's the year of Wayland desktop I prefer foot https://codeberg.org/dnkl/foot

Renders faster than Alacritty or kitty.

platzhirsch··on Comparing Hare to Rust and Zig
The only reasonable framework to compare programming language :-)

platzhirsch··on A Leaked Memo from Google CEO Sundar Pichai Comes Amidst Employee Discontent
I evaluate the quality of a goal using this criterion: if its opposite is nonsensical or foolish, it's not worthwhile. For example:

"Deliver the world's most advanced, safe, and responsible AI."

This is not a very aspiring goal that will distinguish you from your competition because why would anyone want to deliver the world's most outdated, unsafe and irresponsible AI?

platzhirsch··on Reading QR codes without a computer
This is useful. I tried to scan a QR code with my analog camera and it didn't work. Now I can apply this algorithm to the developed photo myself.
platzhirsch··on Americans are canceling more of their streaming services
Had five different subscriptions. If I find myself subscribing, I immediately cancel the subscription so I don't need to evaluate it I still need it.

platzhirsch··on FFmpeg lands CLI multi-threading as its "most complex refactoring" in decades
As multi-core as Python and Ruby then.
platzhirsch··on Half-Life: 25th Anniversary Documentary [video]
Diamonds in the rough with a hunger for more. Kudos to the founders recognizing this.
platzhirsch··on Show HN: Hacker News Summary – Let ChatGPT Summarize Hacker News for You
This is very cool, I have worked on a similar project, but haven't managed to take the time to finish & launch it. Some food for thought:

I was interested in being able to scroll Hacker News but instead of opening the article open the summary. It would be as interesting to read a summary of the discussion below.

Ideally, it's possible to easily get to the real thing. This way you can decide what's interesting to dive into deeper and where it's good to get an idea of the TL;DR: even if it might not be accurate which is the next interesting point of contention that would be interesting to drill further down.

platzhirsch··on Measured: Typing latency of Zutty compared to other terminal emulators (2021)
Curious how foot compares.
platzhirsch··on The age of the Silicon Valley ‘moonshot’ is over
This will give birth to the next cycle of startups. I envision a lot of disgruntled ex-employees taking it to pursue their own enterprise, doing things again different than the companies before. This is a good thing.

platzhirsch··on Profiling Go Programs (CLI Edition)
On this topic I highly recommend Bill Kennedy's talk: https://youtu.be/6qAfkJGWsns

It helped me to step upy profiling game quite a bit.

platzhirsch··on Go port of SQLite without CGo
My guess is that over the years many optimizations have gone into SQLite that would take a lot of effort to catch up to.
platzhirsch··on Shitty First Drafts (1995) [pdf]
Lindy-compatible and a great metaphor for a MVP mindset
