I think depending on your sensitivity to these things there’s probably a spectrum of fatigue caused by a day of screen gazing and headphone music.

I know I personally regularly burn out on both screen and music during work hours and prefer more athletic hobbies in my free time because of that.

As someone who self identifies as a nerd, and works exclusively with ‘nerds’ but is actually ‘popular’ irl I think this is an easy one.

Nerds are unpopular because they are mostly introverts. Mostly not that fun to be around unless you like having super deep conversations about a specific topic.

Most people don’t like doing that.

The key to being popular is to meet ‘normal’ people where they are and intentionally engage in non intellectual activities that everyone enjoys. Sports, music, beer, etc.

The ‘more of what you already are’ idea seems very reductionist and unhelpful to me.

There are definitely real risks that need to be made known around pre existing mental conditions and psychedelic use. Those are appreciated.

But your thesis suggests that transformative experiences are unlikely to happen which from personal experience I can say is false. The impact of a breakthrough psychedelic experience can be profoundly positive especially for those starting from a less enlightened place.

BUT everyone knows that guy who has the “I’m Jesus” moment instead of “we’re all Jesus” and it’s usually easy to see it coming in retrospect.

I wonder what the perception of Tesla will be in a few years when people start wanting to upgrade / sell these cars. I can’t imagine the resale being comparable to a Toyota. There is certainly a reason Toyota is the worlds most popular auto manufacturer, and it is very different from the reasoning people use to justify Tesla bullishness.

I work for a software company serving companies that frequently go through FDA processes. Sometimes our software is replacing literally shipping file cabinets of documents to facilitate those processes. It’s amazing how slow some industries move.

Serious question: do we have any data on (non n95) mask wearing being an effective protective method from COVID-19? I’ve heard people use the prevalence of mask wearing in countries like South Korea and their better Covid results as a type of data point, but that data could be correlation rather than causation. Any other insights? Im truly sick of the masks but would feel better if I knew there was some science behind them.

The insistence on bullying me into iCloud with notifications is my least favorite iOS feature.

I’m about 3/4 the way through Taleb’s ‘Antifragile’ after having already read ‘The Black Swan’ coincidentally only a few months before Covid hit. Must read material for understanding the world we are living in / entering right now in my opinion.

The procrastination link is an interesting one. I used to put things off until the day they were due, waking up at 5 in the morning to finish papers etc. But it wasn’t until later in life that I started identifying as a ‘morning person’. Procrastination often seems to be our body / mind subconsciously optimizing for future peak performance.

My experience as a runner has taught me that indeed a calorie is just a calorie. I’ve been everywhere from mostly plant based to mostly meat based to mostly junk food based without significantly impacting body weight through any of those shifts. The real important part is the speed that different foods enable you to consume calories and an awareness of caloric intake in general.

For the people asking for a routine I would recommend “Light on Prãnãyãma: The Yogic Art of Breathing” by B. K. S. Iyengar. All the info you could ever want and more. I have had a regular pranayama practice for the past several years and this book really helps dial in the mechanics of it as well as some great history.

I think what you mean by 'hipsters' is 'professionals'. As someone who's made several records and been in many recording studios, I would challenge you to name a single record that does not utilize an analog signal chain, for mastering at the very least. VST modeling is great when you want a super clear tone and is very popular in certain genres. But definitely not ubiquitous and certainly not superior tech. Digital just don't SLAP like analog.
