I really really really really missed seeing blogs like this! These blogs always felt like home, like a traveler's notebook, like a cozy warm personal place. And all we are left with is these boring corporate flat garbage.

pmkary··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
Why on Earth do you have to give Paint, internet? How is that a technical debt? Making all nice little fully offline apps Internet Nightmare Slop is wag beyond debt.
pmkary··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
I love Microsoft! Who else might look at a fully offline drawing app and think: "Man this needs the most severe level of networking access capable of remote code execution", and that surely is to put their useless Copilot to absolutely nowhere. Next headline will be "All user credentials stolen from Notepad"
pmkary··on 9965 GNU – An asteroid named for the free-software GNU Project
Soon enough it will be hit by the 1991 Linux which will stay on the surface, it'll be called GNU/Linux. The name is not nice and some will speculate on which portion is the main portion, this'll end with a crusades that'll last so long, scientist will forgot their fight on the superiority of VIMScope vs Tele E-MAX. Sadly after a while more asteroids hit the GNU, and so its share of mass drops to 8%, this is when a group of people who walks in circles and hold each others hands humming African songs of unity and peace will come and threw away the remains of GNU and replace them with newly rusted sections.

I always wanted to say hi to you! Hi!
pmkary··on Antimony: CAD Software Evolved from Lisp Machines and Not Drafting Tables (2015)
I first found your work exactly at those years and it blew my mind as I had no idea how these things worked, only to forget and rediscover it yesterday. It was a lovely find back then and changed my mind so much, thanks for it!

> The second thing is that GT got really slow with all the data structure re-interpreting and rerendering.

Ironically enough, I was thinking about the same thing in the morning of the day I replied to you, that gives the amount of data JS provides in the runtime, do we really need Smalltalk for a live system? I agree with you fully.

I guess something about me doesn't want to accept that BB can be a superior GT!

I was talking at around a year ago with Tudor Girba and asked him what is his opinion towards AI---I somehow believed it to be conflicting with his world view, but then he showed me some amazing demos of llms walking inside of the GT, making tools and molding it. It was way before these new agentic plugin-based IDEs.

I think Girba's really amazing idea of "language = ui = software = data" has a huge win in terms of AI that is not used anywhere else (maybe only in Chris Granger's Eve), but to work with data and build live on it, is something way better than BB.

pmkary··on Lego collaboration with Daft Punk
Anything is infinitely more cute and beautiful when its LEGO :))))))))
pmkary··on How close can pure functional programming get to C?
This is kind of hacker news post and comments I like; extreme languages on extreme performance with extreme features, not types being added to a language ten gizzilion times slower than a tortoise and the post making anti-type flat-earthers getting freaked out if they have to vaccinate next.
pmkary··on The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial
Exactly.
pmkary··on The HTML-in-Canvas API origin trial
This is the best news ever! I can't believe it was implemented in just one year after that blogpost... Boy I'm going to be spending good portions of my life making with this API...

pmkary··on Does Ruby on Rails still make sense?
Rails is slow, and it has little tooling. If it was me I would have used Go so that compiler would give the LLM some errors and narrow its error window, is way faster than Ruby and makes way more sense to have a way faster code than a slow one for the same price, everyone can read Go code and it is so narrow in the possible space of decisions that an LLM can never write usual spaghetti that it writes in other languages to save tokens... I think the problem is in looking at Rust as the alternative.
pmkary··on Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains
That is just so stupid...
pmkary··on Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains
Yeah, but their treatment was terrible.
pmkary··on Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains
Yeah, but you don't have to be such horrible people about it. At least give the person a few days to move their stuff. And I wasn't checking it from Iran.
pmkary··on Namecheap just seized and disabled all my domains
I'm an Iranian---which is something you have no choice in, you just turn 4~5 and understand enough language that they tell you that you are an Iranian. And well out of believing namecheap is a good company (since I had my DNS there) I purchased my domain from them. Then one day these fuckers banned my domain, and my access to the dashboard without any warnings or headsup, didn't even allow me to move my domain to somewhere else, and those vultures from GoDaddy bought it in the auction and have put it for 3500€... Horrible people
