polarcuke··on Object-Oriented Programming is Bad (2016) [video]
Ruby and Swift (and other languages I'm pretty sure) allow you to have named functions nested in functions
polarcuke··on Ask HN: Best Movies you saw in 2012?
Django Unchained - Cloud Atlas - Looper - Argo - Easily the best movies I saw this year, they were all really, really awesome.
polarcuke··on Want to learn to code? Don't copy and paste, type out other people's code
I agree with this article, typing the code out (as long as you are focusing on it and not just typing absentmindedly) really forces you to read all of the code, which should help you understand what is happening. Just as in the article I have also found myself unable to write my own code at times due to working off of other programs or snippets. When I type it out though I gain a much more thorough knowledge of the api or language.
polarcuke··on Share your weekend/part-time startup (December 2012)
My friend and I have been working on Protobowl, a realtime multiplayer quizbowl game.

polarcuke··on Codersumo - Challenge your inner sumo coder.
It seems like sites like this are becoming more popular, or at least the idea of them is. This is the second one I've seen recently, the other is http://www.codewa.rs/, this one looks interesting since it's for more languages than just javascript. Regardless it defiantly looks like fun, can't wait till the real version is released.
polarcuke··on A better, prettier, cross-browser OK plateau typing tutor
Sort of off topic but that app you linked, typing.io is really cool, thanks for sharing.
polarcuke··on Hacking my Vagina
Wow, this is easily the strangest top post I have ever seen on hacker news. I actually can't stop laughing. I guess it's because most people just don't think about technology and sex in the same thought unless you are thinking about internet porn. An interesting read no less.
polarcuke··on “Anonymous” File-Sharing Darknet Ruled Illegal
I still don't understand how cases like this are brought up. It seems to me like random people are targeted at random times. I see stories like this every day, not about Darknet specifically but about rulings against file sharers and pirates. Could anyone shed light on how a select few people are singled out of the masses of people who fileshare.
polarcuke··on Billion-Ton Comet May Have Missed Earth by a Few Hundred Kilometers in 1883
Well if this is true I guess there is one more thing for us to be thankful for today!
polarcuke··on Homeland Security spent $430M on radios its employees don’t know how to use
Yeah, this seems like pretty typical misuse of government money. Even if these radios are an effective investment why wouldn't they spend a couple million more and train the employees responsible for using them? It's pretty ridiculous in my opinion.
polarcuke··on How often do you check to see if you're getting better at coding?
I have only been programming for about 2 years, but already in that time I have noticed an incredible amount of changes when I look back at my old code. Some of the things that I did back then were so dumb I'm not sure how it ever worked. In general though every time I look back at my old code I realize how far I have come and it encourages me to keep pushing myself to write better code with good style. It also really is, as the article says, a humbling experience. Even though I am still relatively new to coding it shows that I still have a lot more to learn and that I wasn't quite as good as I thought I was back then.
polarcuke··on Why I Have Given Up on Coding Standards
Just plain wrong is all there is to say about this article in my opinion. That said I don't believe that style requirements need to be hyper rigid, they should just prevent people from writing code that is entirely unreadable for no apparent reason.
polarcuke··on Why I Have Given Up on Coding Standards
This is exactly what I was thinking as I read the article. There really are "Crazy Coder's" out there who write obfuscated code just because they can and it's infuriating.
polarcuke··on Trotify: make your bicycle sound like a horse [video]
I saw the second video, which shows the sound and that is pretty cool. I don't really understand what the point of this is though. Why exactly would you want to sound like a horse while riding a bike, wouldn't that get very annoying? Also, the main video on the page is seemingly random and does not really display the purpose of the product or give any rational reason for buying one. Another thing that is strange to me is the fact that anyone would ever be inclined to attach one of these to their bike. It seems flimsy and bulky.

All of that said I do think it is a pretty funny, interesting product, and would maybe, maybe, consider buying one for something such as a beach cruiser, if I were to have a bike like that.

polarcuke··on A Better Twitter Bootstrap Modal
This is pretty awesome, I'm going to be using it for sure. As the title suggests I definetly think it is much better than the standard bootstrap modal. You should try to get this implemented into bootstrap. Good work.
polarcuke··on Google Glass could be the virtual dieting pill of the future
The idea here though, as far as I can see, is for people who are lazy and presumably fat. A person like this (possibly the average American) has very little will power and wants to eat what they like. If tech like this existed they could feel like they are eating everything they want while still taking in less calories than they would normally.
