polyomino··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program

polyomino··on Dust: Pretraining Transformers Without Backpropagation
Even though this is way more expensive than backprop, could a hybrid approach where you fine tune an existing checkpoint that's been backpropped unlock further gains? It would be cool to apply this to different stages and see if that affects the learning trajectory
polyomino··on Meta VR Glasses
That is what meta says they want, but their glasses are accessories on apples computer for now. Vr is more open you can sideload your own apks
polyomino··on Mark Zuckerberg's Social Reckoning
Youtube is the big one called out in this settlement
polyomino··on Qwen 3.8
Linux is a huge project and is not really comparable to Debian
polyomino··on Trains halted across Germany because of communication system problem
These are effective targets for hybrid warfare for that very reason, plausible deniability
polyomino··on Jury finds Meta liable in case over child sexual exploitation on its platforms
Children do not want child locked devices and they will find alternatives
polyomino··on Do AI Agents Make Money in 2026? Or Is It Just Mac Minis and Vibes?
Everyone knows the real money is in AI generated articles about AI
polyomino··on Open Chaos: A self-evolving open-source project
They should automate reading hacker news comments and generating PRs to address them
polyomino··on Who Watches the Waymos? I do [video]
Looks like it's GAIA by Marco Cochrane, I remember seeing it out in the desert. It looks like it might not be related to Waymo and just on the adjacent property
polyomino··on DeepSeek-v3.2: Pushing the frontier of open large language models [pdf]
The success of Facebook basically proves that public brand perception does not matter at all
polyomino··on Claude Advanced Tool Use
Unfortunate that they chose python instead of bash as the wrapper. Bash would have wider interoperability across languages and workflows that don't touch python. It would also expose more performant tools.
polyomino··on Apple Mini Apps Partner Program
Forcing iPad support seems like tying. I wonder if this will finally get Instagram to release an iPad app.
polyomino··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
They don't put MacOS on iPad because they want MacOS to slowly die and make App Store the only way to install software. This has nothing to do with cannibalizing Mac.
polyomino··on New updates and more access to Google Earth AI
I have found that using LLMs to generate queries for Overpass (Open street map query language) works really well. Great alternative if you don't care to deal with corporate nonsense.
polyomino··on Galaxy XR: The first Android XR headset
The only thing people really do for extended periods of time in these headsets is play gorilla tag, highly skewed towards young kids.
polyomino··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
Perhaps or maybe they will require them?
polyomino··on California age verification bill backed by Google, Meta, OpenAI heads to Newsom
The MPAA's argument against this bill is a complete joke:

>MPA urged state lawmakers to reject Wicks’ bill this week in a letter, obtained by POLITICO, claiming device-based age checks may sow confusion; for example, if parents and kids had separate Netflix profiles under one account that’s logged in on multiple devices.

To the point where I'm asking if someone needs some token opposition to frame this obvious bill a political win?

polyomino··on iPhone Air
can they just make it flat? seriously
polyomino··on The U.K. closed a tax loophole for the global rich, now they're fleeing
I think you missed the part that this was in Europe, no need to worry about startups
polyomino··on Facebook is asking to use Meta AI on photos you haven’t yet shared
Mark's user id is 4
polyomino··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
Liquid glass design paradigm only works on reprojected displays. Additive displays can't replicate the distortions along the edges of the elements for both optical focus reasons and because you can see through the element.
polyomino··on Progressive JSON
We encountered this problem when converting audio only LLM applications to visual + audio. The visuals would increase latency by a lot since they need to be parsed completely before displaying, whereas you can just play audio token by token and wait for the LLM to generate the next one while audio is playing.
polyomino··on Port of Los Angeles says shipping volume will plummet 35% next week
lies, source: I looked out my window
polyomino··on No Bitcoin ETFs at Vanguard (2024)
> We do have a lot of interest in blockchain, the technology behind cryptocurrencies. We believe its application to a number of other uses besides crypto will make capital markets more efficient, and we’ve been actively involved in research to use blockchain technology

Well, they clearly have no idea what they’re talking about. Next!

polyomino··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
Lower latency, which can be useful for live translation or keyboard autocomplete
polyomino··on Interview gone wrong
This is a tangent, but checking if all the elements in the diagonal position are the same is not sufficient. You also need to check that any of the elements are not '-'.
polyomino··on How do layer 2s differ from execution sharding?
As far as I’m aware, there’s no way of validating something without observing it. If that’s true, then you will have to trade the ability to validate the entire chain in order to scale on chain, at which point, who cares what’s on chain vs off?
polyomino··on On Microsoft, the U.S. Government Must Embrace the Stick
You could totally put together a corporate financial statement if your life depended on it.
polyomino··on Vision Pro: What we got wrong at Oculus that Apple got right
Ok now, I have a few separate colored lights pointing at the lamp. What color is the lamp? How about when it’s on?
