polyvisual··on Withnail and I (2001)
What an interesting read.

I have a friend who is just like Vivian. I'm sure that in an alternative universe their wasted talents of observational wit and caustic retorts would have made them a world class comic playwright.

"Here hair here". What a great film, also.

polyvisual··on 3D Army Land Navigation Courses
Possibly the longest email address I've ever seen!

polyvisual··on Hacker in Snowflake extortions may be a U.S. soldier
221B is 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes lived.
polyvisual··on DiyPresso: DIY Espresso Machine
I read that Gaggia would replace flaking boilers. Contact your supplier for information.
polyvisual··on Show HN: Hacker League – Open-Source Rocket League on Linux
I've been playing different styles and genres of video games ever since Wolfenstein 3D and I consider myself pretty adept at playing them.

However, Rocket League is one game that I just can't master. I've tried, really really tried, but I just can't play it with any amount of skill.

It's a shame, as it looks really fun and I hear my son and his mates having a ball when they play.

polyvisual··on Show HN - A side project I built to help with my laziness/procrastination
I thought I'd share a side project I've been work on recently.

I've always struggled with procrastination. The final straw came last year when I forgot to book an MOT for my campervan, resulting in a cancelled weekend away, grief from my wife and kids and a realisation that I needed to address my procrastination problem.

So, I did what all good software engineers do: I spent a weekend hacking together a small reminder service.

The service emails me 12 weeks before, 8 weeks before, 5 weeks before, 3 weeks before, 2 weeks before, and 1 week before an important deadline. I can also choose daily reminders on the same 12, 8, 5, 3, 2, 1 schedule.

I have found that this increasingly frequent nagging helps me focus on important tasks and I haven't missed any renewals or deadlines since.

Following feedback from people I have shared the idea with, I put some more effort into the service and built remindify.co

Thanks! Matt

polyvisual··on Brave's AI assistant now integrates with PDFs and Google Drive
Brave is great. I disabled all the web3 stuff and tidied up the homepage so it doesn't show me all the news etc.

The only issue I have is that the sync between my iphone, macbook, windows can sometimes get out of sync.

polyvisual··on End of Life for Twilio Authy Desktop App
I use Authy. I've read a few comments about how migrating away is difficult. What do you use instead?

I also use bitwarden, but not sure how I feel about passwords and totp being in the same app.

polyvisual··on A new approach to local multiplayer / splitscreen perspective with raytracing
Interesting take on split screen! In the demo, when the screen splits at about 4 seconds, I felt a bit nauseous, almost like a very light seasickness.
polyvisual··on Elon Musk says Twitter, now X, is to charge all users subscription fees
I can't see this ending well for X.

Forcing all users to pay for access seems a pretty heavy handed way of dealing with bots.

polyvisual··on Liquid Bewitchment: Gin Drinking in England, 1700–1850
Thanks, will do.
polyvisual··on Liquid Bewitchment: Gin Drinking in England, 1700–1850
If you want to read more about life in 1800s London, you should read The People of the Abyss by Jack London https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_People_of_the_Abyss

It's his first-hand account of spending two weeks living in Whitechapel, East London.

polyvisual··on Windows NT on 600MHz machine opens apps instantly. What happened?
My goodness, that accordion needs to removed from their code base immediately.

A horrific piece of UI/UX/engineering/whatever.

polyvisual··on GitHub staff are required to use Teams by Sep 1, 2023
My lord, that behaviour drives me mad.

The experience of using the editor for writing and editing is horrendous.

polyvisual··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
I can `tail -f` a file on windows. That's enough use case for me :D
polyvisual··on Ask HN: How can techies influence companies to stop implementing SMS/phone 2FA
Agreed. My day job is in fintech. Our average customer age is > 60.

Explaining 2fa via SMS to that age group is hard enough. Adding authenticators or QR codes into the mix would blow their frail minds.

polyvisual··on OwnTracks – keep track of your own location
Related to OwnTracks I suppose... how does Google Maps on iOS know where I parked my car, if I've set it only use my location 'whilst I'm using the app' and I haven't used the app to navigate to my parked location?
polyvisual··on A CIA website was out of date about who runs the UK
ha ha, yeah, records might need updating in the not-too-distant future :)
polyvisual··on Ask HN: Managing career progression for those with no interest in progressing?
Perhaps look into Simon Wardley's idea of town planners, settlers, and pioneers?

https://wardleypedia.org/mediawiki/index.php/Pioneers_settle...

Guide them into one of those roles?

polyvisual··on Google Lighthouse V8 – Improved CLS metrics
ha, yes, absolutely. That shift of content is beyond frustrating.
polyvisual··on Apple Introduces AirTag
My side business is making handmade/handstitched leather belts, wallets etc.

These keyfob holders look like the sort of thing I'd make and sell... probably for the same £ cost as the Apple branded, mass-produced alternatives.

polyvisual··on IoT Unravelled Part 1: It's a Mess but Then There's Home Assistant
I recently installed Home Assistant and bought some TP-Link HS100 plugs so I can turn the heater / workbench lights in my workshop on and off, so it's nice and warm before I start work.

Two weeks after I'd got it all running on an old Raspberry Pi, TP-Link released a firmware update that nuked the HS100 plug's ability to be controlled via Home Assistant :/

There are quite a few irritated TP-Link customers, but to their credit, TP-Link do seem to be reverting the firmware for Home Assistant users.

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/236268 https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/237614

Edit: once the firmware is reverted, I'll be blocking the plug's access to external networks! School boy error - I should have done that from the start, really!

polyvisual··on Ask HN: What is your favorite motto?
Some people like mottos that are steeped in historical depth or psychological meaning. I'm much more simple... mine is from the 2015 film, Cinderella: "Have courage and be kind".

Means all sorts of things... have the courage to; stand by your decisions, own up when you made the wrong decision, follow a path, take a different path, be yourself, be something else, put others first, etc. etc.

And there's nothing wrong with being kind.

polyvisual··on Show HN: Everlook – Find and list remote job opportunities
One thing that irks me about sites for remote work is that they don't distinguish between countries.

A lot of employers will be remote, but only within their own country. I want to filter out remote jobs that won't accept candidates from outside of the UK, for example.

polyvisual··on Postmortem of the failure of one hosting storage unit on Jan. 8, 2020
yes, good point!
polyvisual··on Postmortem of the failure of one hosting storage unit on Jan. 8, 2020
Their handling of the issue on Twitter was enough for to decide to move my domain names away from them when their renewal is due.
polyvisual··on Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups
Yeah, that's not a great way to win back the trust of your customers.

I'm going to look at moving my domain registrations away from them.

polyvisual··on Shopify Overtakes eBay as Second Biggest Shopping Site After Amazon
Trunk looks useful... my side business is handmade leather goods (https://coastleather.com) and cross posting between my own website, ebay, etsy and amazon is a pain, so I just don't bother. This has meant that channels other than my website became stale and I shut down the stores.

Do you have plans to include syncing for woocommerce stores?

polyvisual··on How I Consume Books
My mother was a librarian for 30 years and I gained a love of books from her; I just I wish I had more time to read.

Between my day job in Fin Tech, my sideline business in my handmade leather goods and with two children at primary school, I basically have ten minutes before I fall asleep in bed at the end of the day to squeeze in a few pages.
