Why not just curl to bash with the official instructions?

powerbook5300CS··on Why doesn't HN have a mobile app?
Octal is the best one. Typing this comment from it right now.

powerbook5300CS··on Tesla profit plunges as sales fall and AI expenses pile up
My Tesla drove me to the supermarket today. I pushed a button and it took me there and parked in a good spot. It drove me to another state this summer. It works and works very well. Not sure if you’re up to date here because the full self driving is incredible. Nobody is even close to touching Tesla here, they’re 5 years ahead of any other car maker in this respect.

Why doesn’t Microsoft take the hint and make a decent pdf viewer / editor thingy?

They seemed to get the hint on the terminal finally…

Handle basic viewing, editing, signatures. Etc…

While we are at it a GTK one would be great in Gnome too…

powerbook5300CS··on Ask HN: Codebases with great, easy to read code?
Redis. Read the redis source code if you want to see nice C.

The reason it always impresses me is that C can look like gobledygook, but yet this codebase is clean and understandable.

powerbook5300CS··on Zero downtime Postgres migration, done right
Its insane that it has to be this complex and require third party software to accomplish…

Most modern rdbms/nosql database vendors allow a rolling upgrade where you roll in new servers and roll out the old ones seamlessly.

Also the fact that AWS rds doesnt do this with zero downtime by default through automating it this way is also crazy. Why pay for hosted when the upgrade story is incomplete? Take downtime to upgrade a DB in 2021? Everyone must be joking.

powerbook5300CS··on The TTY Demystified (2008)
This gets posted here every so often but to be honest it still isn’t demystified for me even on the third read.
powerbook5300CS··on iTerm2 3.3
I like having options but wouldn’t recommend iTerm.

Apple’s Terminal.app is more performant rendering text and more responsive to input while admittedly having somewhat less unnecessary features.

In fact, iTerm is one of the slowest terminals out there!

See: https://danluu.com/term-latency/

iTerm used to have a lot of really compelling stuff that was missing from the official terminal like tabs, etc... that made straying away from the canonical terminal app worth it but most of them eventually made their way to Terminal.app so nowadays it’s mostly just fluff.

powerbook5300CS··on Ask HN: How is Facebook's iOS app 491MB?
Facebook is not good at mobile. Uninstalling the app is the single best thing you can do for your phone battery life.

Just use the mobile site with safari. It’s blazing fast and doesn’t slurp your address book or location and drain your battery.

powerbook5300CS··on Craft: A simple Minecraft clone written in C using OpenGL shaders
Fogleman has some really cool side projects in a variety of areas written in a variety of languages... and I noticed he’s got two kids! As a new father, how is this possible? Really boring/easy day job?

Having a daughter is an amazing experience that is rewarding in its own right but something that really scares me about fatherhood is not being able to do any deep work for the rest of my life.

Doing deep work is another part of living I really enjoy and I’m somewhat petrified that I’ll never experience it again. Maybe it doesn’t matter.

Thanks for sharing. I'm curious if you already knew the tech stuff before/while committing the crimes or did you learn all that after going through the system?
