punyearthling··on Cats appear to grieve death of fellow pets – even dogs, study finds
My cat did this when my dog passed. The day it happened, she went to every spot our dog slept and cried. It was heartbreaking tbh

I love this idea so much!
punyearthling··on Steve Teixeira sues Mozilla, alleging discrimination after cancer diagnosis
It's self-inflicted
punyearthling··on 1/3 of women < 44 have no children and the trend is rising. What is causing it?
My reasons:

- it's painful

- it's expensive

- it's a drag

- culture war stuff (who wants to deal with school issues, medical issues, community issues, etc.?)

punyearthling··on Umbrella Cover Museum
Delightful museum and Hoffman, the curator, is an absolute delight. Highly recommend!
punyearthling··on The Decline of the User Interface
This is why accessibility is everyone's responsibility when making software. Users should never feel confused about what they're trying to do.

Wish the post provided more screenshots to name and shame.

punyearthling··on Roblox executive says children making money on the platform is 'a gift'
I'm in the same boat as you on not knowing much about child labour.

That being said, if a child is doing labour for a company (in this case Roblox, but the same could be said for Instagram, Tiktok, etc.), why is it considered more ethical to NOT pay that child for their work?

I know an argument could be made that adding financial incentives encourage more kids to participate in said child labour, but NOT paying them doesn't dissuade them from doing so.

And how is Roblox's practice different from the creator funds of social media sites that rely on user-generated content to justify their existence? It's all very murky to me.

I think my problem with this model is Roblox taking such a large cut from their workforce, not that they pay them at all.

punyearthling··on Mozilla Firefox is below PG&E threshold for support
If Mozilla doesn't care about recapturing market share, why should we? Someone should just fork Gecko and make a new browser at this point.

punyearthling··on Live record of being fired from Cloudflare during a redundancy plan [video]
Standing ovation to the employee. She handled herself really well and I don't think I'd be able to talk back like that
punyearthling··on The failure of self-checkout technology
I prefer self-checkout simply because I'm better at bagging my groceries than people are. Employees don't care if your food gets crushed by a carton of milk, or under fill the plastic bags; and that's another thing - human cashiers use plastic bags here in the US. I like having control over my bagging situation.
punyearthling··on Not all automated testing tools support Shadow DOM in web components
shadow DOM doesn't play well with assistive technology, so you shouldn't really be using it in production right now anyways
punyearthling··on Gov.uk has a max sentence length of 25 words

punyearthling··on Firefox on the brink?
no. web interoperability is a thing that's happening and the major players (including ff) mostly all behave/look the same. a project officially dropping ff support should have no impact on ppl using ff.
punyearthling··on Walking has plummeted across America
You must have very bad luck. I live in the suburbs of the midwest with no sidewalks. Even if we had sidewalks, there's nowhere to walk to (sprawl and all that). So walking isn't really encouraged, but folks do it all the same. Walking their dogs, walking to work... and some of the roads ppl walk on aren't designed for pedestrian traffic. I'd say it's downright dangerous at times. But ppl do what they need to do I guess and nobody hassles 'em for it.

I think bicyclists get the most grief here, mostly because cars don't like sharing the road and bikes tend to slow down traffic.

punyearthling··on Gen Z is lonely. Going back to the office may be the cure for some
- join a club or local sports team

- go to the gym

- volunteer somewhere

- take classes on something you're interested in

- go to community events

these are just a handful of options i just thought of where you can interact with other ppl. filling your social life with a work life isn't the answer.

punyearthling··on Web components will outlive JavaScript frameworks
web components are nice, but not perfect and i get tired of web component proponents neglecting to mention the trade-offs when using them.

enabling shadow DOM renders that component completely inaccessible to users using assistive tech like screen readers. without a shadow DOM enabled, you lose the encapsulation benefit devs seem to love. js framework components, for all their faults, can at least be accessible.

i just don't think web components are quite there yet.

punyearthling··on Why Are So Many Dogs on Prozac?
tangental story, but my dog had chronic ear infections since we adopted her as a puppy. my vet at the time told use she had a gluten allergy and to put her on grain-free foods. years later, i'm seeing another vet and he says that's all non-sense and grain-free diets actually cause heart issues in dogs.

he tells me much of the pet care industry immitates the human care industry, e.g., fad diets and medical trends. i can't help but notice this whenever i go to a pet store now. the labeling on foods and the push for "CBD for pets" - can't help but feel the pet care companies co-opt marketing strategies for people

punyearthling··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
CSS is moving so fast these days, can Tailwind keep up?

I see loads of comments in here using things like `.mb-sm-3` (I presume it's `margin-bottom: 3` for small screens?) as an example for how readable the classes are, but with CSS introducing logical properties I wonder if Tailwind's syntax needs to update to accommodate those changes? Using logical properties, this same example would render to `margin-block-end: 3` and already you're moving away from the easy-to-remember shorthand Tailwind created. If Tailwind's syntax needs to update, isn't that a pain in the ass to maintain?

This is just one example, but CSS is introducing loads of new stuff every few months it seems and I would hate to be limited by the constraints of a CSS library when browsers are capable of achieving so much these days. I enjoy learning CSS, not Tailwind.

punyearthling··on Replying to comments about our web page design
I say this as an accessibility specialist - I think this site is fine. The authors have made a site that brings them joy and if they see customers dropping off and are fine with it, that’s OK.

For folks complaining of headaches or eye strain, browsers come equipped with forced-colors mode that enable you to choose your preferred color scheme.

punyearthling··on Blender 3.5
Polygon Runway has a good intro tutorial. But like you, I'm in a similar boat. Play around with it for a couple hours and can't get back into it even when I really want to. I think it's a matter of building a good habit.
punyearthling··on Current causes of death in children and adolescents in the United States (2022)
I figured firearms and ODing would be on the rise, but suffocation surprised me. It's still low, but also one of the few that's trending upward. What could be the cause of that?
punyearthling··on Nearly 20% Adults May Have Misophonia – Significant Negative Responses to Sounds
My sibling has this and I have a hard time feeling sorry for those with it as a result. When they were younger, they hated loud noises - sounds like fireworks - and that was reasonable.

But as they got older, they got annoyed by more sounds, usually mouth related. My dad's clicking jaw, someone eating chips at a birthday party, a baby talking gibberish at a restaurant, etc. If my sibling hears a sound they find annoying, you'll be sure to get a dirty look, screamed at, or they'll burst into tears. Sometimes it's all the above. I won't visit my sibling anymore because of their problem.

As unpleasant as it sounds, you have to desensitize yourself to these sounds. The more you avoid it, the more intolerable it gets.
