pyhtel··on I accidentally saved my company half a million dollars
https://18f.gsa.gov/

Searching "USDS or 18F" helped google understand what I was looking for

pyhtel··on What “work” looks like
non-coffee drinker here, never been able to nap during the daytime. I reckon it's mostly just differences between people.
pyhtel··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
Is there? When I open it there's only the whatsapp logo while it loads, both on android and web
pyhtel··on Launch HN: CodeCrafters (YC S22) – Practice writing complex software
From the course: "In this challenge, you'll build a barebones SQLite implementation that supports basic SQL queries like SELECT. Along the way you'll learn about SQLite's file format, how indexed data is stored in B-trees and more."

So yes for B-trees, but it seems to end with SELECT and a basic WHRERE query, no joins or anything like that

pyhtel··on How to Do a Handstand
Or maybe a single data point does not make a model
pyhtel··on Germany to Introduce Bill to Accelerate Wind Energy Expansion
I do live there, they look cool. Greetings from the Netherlands. Seriously though, what is this comment supposed to achieve?
pyhtel··on Tell HN: I probably spend more on piracy than if I just paid for content
He's using usenet, I highly doubt he's seeding the data he holds
pyhtel··on Browser in the Browser (BITB) Attack
Vast majority of people tend to stick to the default theme. And of course, those also tend to be the most vulnerable to phishing attacks
pyhtel··on U.S. eliminates human controls requirement for fully automated vehicles
I'm guessing because fully automated vehicles don't exist (yet).
pyhtel··on Tell HN: 1Password shares passwords you don't want shared
You can make them appear with View>Conceal passwords, but I'm fairly sure it hides them by default.
pyhtel··on The Manga Guide Series
Membership to ACM (acm.org) comes with access to the o'reilly learning platform along with some other benefits and costs $99, so that's a pretty good deal. Have to admit I don't read enough to make it worth it though
pyhtel··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Care to elaborate?
pyhtel··on RSS is wonderful
The first time I scroll to the bottom it doesn't actually keeps the footer in the view, with a little bit of extra space to scroll. If I scroll further it starts infinite scrolling. So it seems they sort of tried to deal with this, but it should really be on top. Also when I first got to the site it was the Japanese version, which doesn't have intite scrolling for some reason
pyhtel··on Substack's UI and 1Password temporarily cost me $2k
Between Keepass, 1passwword, and lastpass I've never seen a password manager that just shows the password without the user explicitly choosing to reveal it
pyhtel··on Null
I would assume most simulations would be more academic/business related, like how we have tools that simulate a wind tunnel, rather than for entertainment purposes
pyhtel··on Facebook being investigated in Germany for tying Oculus use to Facebook accounts
He didn't say FB shouldn't be hit with an antitrust probe, in your analogy it would be actively tracking thieves down instead of waiting for the thief to voluntarily turn himself in
pyhtel··on AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
Assuming the AI isn't a distributed system, sure
pyhtel··on 1Password for Linux beta
I started off with keepass, then moved to lastpass for better sync, then moved to 1password because I didn't like how lastpass works. Each of them support various forms of exporting/importing logins, so there's not much risk of vendor lockin with those. I'd assume it's the same for other managers, but you'd have to check.

My biggest issue has been that I only saved passwords when I started with keepass instead of username+passwords, which lastpass all imported as secure notes instead of logins.

pyhtel··on Seeing Theory: A Visual Introduction to Probability and Statistics
"2) He opens all the doors except 1"

How is this a given exactly? In the original problem he only opens 1 other door. Now that also happens to be all doors except 1, but from just the 3 door problem that seems more coincidental than a fundamental part to the question

pyhtel··on Noita – roguelite where every pixel is simulated
One I remember: Going off to the far right of the map of the first level, you'll hit a lava lake, followed by a deep pit. If you jump down the pit, it's a shortcut to the second level. There's also a bunch of rewards for exploring to overworld (you start at a cave entrance and are generally expected to go underground immediately)
pyhtel··on The global fertility rate is falling
That assumes there is such a thing as a "I want kids" gene, which I personally have never heard of.
pyhtel··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
Depends on the games you're playing, honestly. That "massive" latency is about 30ms from what I can find, which you're not really going to notice when playing a game like civilization or hearthstone.
pyhtel··on I shipped a word processor that formatted the hard drive every 1024 saves
Oh man, I did something similar once. Folder with customer files also had a temp folder that needed cleaning, so I wrote a program that went into the temp folder and deleted everything recursively. For some reason, the temp folder had a folder named ".." (no reason how anyone managed to create that). So I ran the script, and upon hitting the ".." folder, it started deleting regular customer files. Good times...
pyhtel··on Users hate change
Perhaps not shovels, rental cars/excavators and such aren't too different from a subscription model
pyhtel··on Demetrification: Removing the numbers of likes and retweets from public view
It's a loss of potential revenue that advertisers and content creators can make advertising deals directly, without depending on instagram as a middleman.
