pylua··on Fired Americans Say Indian Firm Gave Their Jobs to H-1B Visa Holders
That seems like the only lever these companies have to pull to increase the stock price.
pylua··on Fired Americans Say Indian Firm Gave Their Jobs to H-1B Visa Holders
Paywall, but it is clear that companies are literally starving for cheap labor. They are willing to do anything, including bringing over workers on potentially inappropriate visas ( I am not a lawyer, just what I have seen).

Honestly I am surprised that they didn’t just hire directly in India.

pylua··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Exactly. They did learn from it -- and it is by far the best way to optimize around short term gains.

Just like people who join a company, grow the company to unsustainable bounds, then leave for the next company while the previous company struggles to maintain or fulfill previous obligations.

pylua··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
Probably get himself into a YouTube channel. I have noticed that with a lot of Excons and this very interesting.
pylua··on Math writing is dull when it neglects the human dimension
That is a consistent problem with the education system no matter what the topic is with few exceptions.
pylua··on Intel, Microsoft discuss plans to run Copilot locally on PCs
I would expect them to rebound by building incredibly efficient ai optimized chips and embedding those into their future devices.

On a macro level apple has disappointed recently. I think the apple car was my biggest disappointment.

pylua··on Ask HN: How common is developer burnout? Have you ever been burnt out?
Being in contracting for software is rough. All the crap rolls down the hill to you from both the customer and internal stakeholders.
pylua··on Tech Job Seekers Without AI Skills Face Lower Salaries and Fewer Roles
Sadly, even all the firefighting skills I learned in tech are not transferable.
pylua··on Tech Job Seekers Without AI Skills Face Lower Salaries and Fewer Roles
The question is how to pivot to another job that is as personally and financially as rewarding as tech? Is a Masters degree the best bet?
pylua··on Ask HN: Success stories from McKinsey (et al.)
I was previously at a public European company that was losing money. I was just a lowly engineer when they brought in a McKinsey consultant. A lot of the changes such as layoffs and cost cutting that came after the arrival was already common sense.

I think the company has at least stopped bleeding money. In my lowly position I did not notice any significant change.

I have experienced deteriorating conditions at other companies that accepted vc money then brought in their own people.

pylua··on OpenAI's chatbot store is filling up with spam
What’s more unethical than the bypassers is the so called detectors whose claims are dubious.
pylua··on How to Start Google
I had the same sort of reaction, even though I felt like the article was not intending to invoke that.

Looking back, when I was the age in the article I was way too insecure and nervous to be able to take this advice. Looking at it now I think it is great and want to set my children up with that way of thinking.

I am 34 and found the message inspiring.

pylua··on How to Start Google
Can you elaborate on this — or any evidence?
pylua··on "Lots of people in CS are (almost surely) GPT-ing their peer reviews"
Sent from my aiphone.
pylua··on Increasing, Not Diminishing: Investigating Returns of Highly Maintainable Code
Code quality is very subjective. Assuming you eliminate the extreme cases of poor code and great code, most people being average, the best thing to do is keep a talented team together as long as possible. The team will accrue knowledge slowly at first but will produce dividends later on as they will have the best knowledge of the system.

Excluding extremely poor situations it is domain knowledge that drives defects, not the code.

pylua··on Ask God's words in different religions with LLMs
Or 421 perhaps ?
pylua··on Golf, and other men's hobbies, drive an increase in ALS risk
It’s odd that it only affects men. Is it possible that men just spend more time with these hobbies ?
pylua··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Hey, I am fine. Thanks for checking in. I really do appreciate it.

My primary issue is that thirty years ago jobs that you could take, such as my wife’s family did, such as minimum wage jobs could lead to you having a house and living with dignity. The majority of jobs created today do not seem to offer that for the reasons I stated above.

I wish there were reasons to be optimistic here but we have to be realistic. I believe the numbers they are telling us are accurate. I also believe the numbers would be historically good, but the reality does not feel like it.

pylua··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
If purchasing power and minimum wage had kept up to pace then unemployment would not be so low.

Though the numbers mean the same they have been artificially influenced by other factors and the ability to measure the economy through unemployment has been nerfed.

Not to mention attrition is higher than the past so the jobs that are being created could be largely recycled.

pylua··on Estimating Software Projects: So you messed up. Now what? (2021)
Sounds like stakeholders are expecting waterfall guarantees without the overhead of proper planning and refinement.

Honestly, the industry should move back to waterfall.

pylua··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Honestly, do people really believe the unemployment rates, or take them at face value?

The real rate of employment is much worse. Not to mention that pay has not kept up with inflation. What would the employment rate look like if it had?

Many low paying jobs are being created and since pay has not kept up it is barely a living wage.

pylua··on Pilot of Boeing flight says he lost control after instrument failure
I can’t wait until they replace pilots with remote workers in a low cost of living area.
pylua··on Activision QA Workers Vote to Form Largest US Video Game Worker Union to Date
That's definitely a fair point. However, that knowledge should live with other members of the team and it can be helpful for QA to have less knowledge of the system. How can that be helpful ? -- so they can view the systems through the lense of a typical end user.
pylua··on Activision QA Workers Vote to Form Largest US Video Game Worker Union to Date
I feel like qa is generally the easiest thing to outsource and will have the least impact.
pylua··on Activision QA Workers Vote to Form Largest US Video Game Worker Union to Date
Why outsource to Europe at all at this point — many cheaper options.
pylua··on AI and other companies: Changing terms of service could be unfair or deceptive
I’m not sure why this even has to be said. Is it a standard to update toc without notifying people who agreed to it originally?
pylua··on "AI will cure cancer" misunderstands both AI and medicine
I am sure generative ai will be able to cure cancer after humans figure it out then post it to the internet.
pylua··on Price fixing by algorithm is still price fixing
Because you want to maximize your profit and get the most from your investment. You also want to see, generally speaking, if it is even reasonable that anyone would to rent out your house at that price
pylua··on Lawyers who voided Elon Musk's pay as excessive want $6B fee
One person with domain knowledge of running things could be well worth it. How many times have you seen adding more people just make it a bigger, more unsustainable mess?

Granted 56 billion is a lot.

pylua··on Lawyers who voided Elon Musk's pay as excessive want $6B fee
Thanks. That provides much better context.
