pylua··on Private Equity Has Its Eyes on Child Care
It has started to feel like in the United States everything is engineered to extract maximum money from you leaving nothing after a paycheck.

Fortunately my kids go to a non profit Montessori.the education is good and it’s not terribly expensive. Maybe child care should be not for profit.

pylua··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
I wonder what the images look like / are accurate if you ask it to generate pictures of laid of googlers.
pylua··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
Unfortunately, unlike cyber security, there are no off the shelf products that are being sold to help companies with general incompetence.
pylua··on France Cuts EV Incentives for Wealthy Households
Let’s just tax the gas stations extremely high to encourage ev growth.

pylua··on Ask HN: Exit strategy for those with only digital skills amid the AI revolution?
Right. That was never disputed. It’s questionable if that’s the best for the us citizen.
pylua··on Ask HN: Exit strategy for those with only digital skills amid the AI revolution?
Clearly there is not that responsibility. Also, a lot of remote workers are not us citizens or authorized to work physically in the us.
pylua··on Ask HN: Exit strategy for those with only digital skills amid the AI revolution?
Offshoring / visas do not account for remote work. U.S. trade restrictions are usually light and can be bypassed easily.

The argument for it is one of vertical integration. A nation should control the items it creates, from banking to military end to end as much as possible. That also maximizes security. Look at the Boeing documents from the engineer over 10 years ago questioning outsourcing. All of your pii and banking data is probably managed by dbas in Asia. That does not sound secure or safe to me.

We are heading towards a time and place where we will not produce anything as a country. Many areas that were once prosperous now are destitute. People live by dealing drugs and by taking as much from the government as possible where their parents worked in factories. People’s respect and dignity have been offshored and outsourced.

Trying to do what’s best for a country and its people is not xenophobic. It’s common sense. It’s very sad and disconcerting to see us citizens wanting the most from their country having their ideas labeled as xenophobic.

I acknowledge U.S. trade has benefited but we are seeing signs of cracks and the side effects of it now. I also don’t think the average American has benefited from it. Living in Bangalore (nicer areas)felt like America in the 90s to me — the same places I used to enjoy in America that are now infested with crime .

pylua··on Ask HN: Exit strategy for those with only digital skills amid the AI revolution?
There needs to be strict regulations on U.S. businesses to disallow them from hiring anyone that is not a citizen or on a visa.

Products that are developed in other countries also must have such an expensive tariff it basically discourages the purchasing of it.

pylua··on Jeffrey Katzenberg Says A.I. Will Eliminate 90% of Artist Jobs on Animated Films
Prompting as a creative commodity ? That is the saddest conclusion of the article.

I was surprised the article didn’t mention voice actors .

pylua··on AI cannot be used to deny health care coverage, feds clarify to insurers
Everyone pays the same regardless of age, sex, etc? I understand they things are the way they are but part of change is making difficult decisions and tradeoffs.
pylua··on AI cannot be used to deny health care coverage, feds clarify to insurers
I don’t see how we can use ai and not have it generate new biases.

I also feel like biases have been baked into insurance data in a discriminatory way for a long time — think about how much car insurance is for a 16 year old boy.

pylua··on Taylor Swift threatens to sue student who tracks her private jet
She definitely is the darling right now. I wonder if going after this student would change the perception of her in people’s minds.
pylua··on Nassim Taleb says the U.S. is in a ‘death spiral’ over government debt
I think if this could be determined objectively politics would be greatly simplified.
pylua··on Nassim Taleb says the U.S. is in a ‘death spiral’ over government debt
I didn’t know this is how it would work. I had hoped they would just confiscate the elected officials personal property or throw them all in jail.

Those sorts of variance in taxes would not be good for anyone.

pylua··on Nassim Taleb says the U.S. is in a ‘death spiral’ over government debt
It’s not always a good return on investment. When you spend someone else’s money you aren’t going to penny pinch or bargain hunt like you need to.
pylua··on Nassim Taleb Says US Faces a 'Death Spiral' of Swelling Debt
I think this could be the only palatable option. There’s no practical alternative.
pylua··on New GitHub Copilot research finds 'downward pressure on code quality'
I think unit tests are suppose to induce friction to a certain extent. Using ai to do it seems like it is just checking a box.
pylua··on Stack Overflow: 79% of Developers Considering a Career Move
I could see a future where people switch to other white collar jobs like accounting, law, and engineering. Software skills will come in handy here.
pylua··on Record number of Americans are homeless amid nationwide surge in rent
What’s wrong with this? People have paid lots of money for those houses and they don’t feel like the local infrastructure can support apartments population density.

I have seen huge problems in Tennessee zoning causing massive traffic issues where I grew up. It’s honestly very bad — maybe we should start by fixing the infrastructure first.

pylua··on US agencies warn companies: Don’t delete Slack or Signal chats
Companies really shouldn’t be required to keep messages unless they are legally bound to do so. It’s very intrusive and very costly to keep.

I don’t really have an issue with bezos using it unless he was under investigation.

If they want to get access maybe they should try some sort of wiretap law to get access to messages before they are deleted ? Place bugs in the board rooms ? Maybe there needs to be a modern way to capture the crime in progress the same way they bugged gotti?

pylua··on No car company has taken up Tesla's offer to license FSD
I wouldn’t trust any company for that, musk or not. I would expect a court case.

I could see companies being nervous about this.

pylua··on No car company has taken up Tesla's offer to license FSD
Does the license say that Tesla will be liable for issues and accidents caused if deemed to be faulty?
pylua··on Standards for Software Liability: Jim Dempsey, Lawfare, UC Berkeley Law
Again, I don’t think it’s special. I think it lacks objectivity. I wish the field had more objectivity.

If we go down this path then we need proper licensing, certifications, and changes should be as well tested as the fda process. Aka releasing software is as rigorous as releasing a new drug.

pylua··on Standards for Software Liability: Jim Dempsey, Lawfare, UC Berkeley Law
The problem with liability here is that software as a discipline is so subjective anything can be argued from any expert just out of a boot camp.

Which is why it is a lawyers dream unless it is completely reworked.

pylua··on Standards for Software Liability: Jim Dempsey, Lawfare, UC Berkeley Law
This would be a great win for the lawyers. T

The better alternative would to be to completely rework the software developing discipline to be as rigorous as civil engineering from the top down. Requiring proper licensing, and security clearances for accessing U.S. customer data.

pylua··on Lumiere: A space-time diffusion model for realistic video generation
This is absolutely unbelievable. Truly impressive.

I felt like this was maybe 5-10 years away.

pylua··on What if serverless meant no backend servers?
Not to mention what if I spill my coffee all over my laptop or otherwise lose access
pylua··on What if serverless meant no backend servers?
What if the schema / view has breaking changes ?
pylua··on Boeing whistleblower: MAX 9 production line has "enormous volume of defects"
I think generally vertical integration produces higher quality products. Outsourcing to other firms trying to save money comes with its own hidden cost not part of the price tag.
