quaintdev··on Claude partial outage
Yesterday got email from Claude that they are offering 50% off for one month if I renew my subscription. I bought it today and now this. I wonder if they sent that email to too many people.
quaintdev··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
> Do you really believe Aaron would be arguing against AI companies and for publishing / recording guilds on the grounds of intellectual property claims?

That's not the point. All the rules and laws are enforced when its you and me but when it's big tech the laws are treated by these companies as mere instructions.

> friendship ended with free access to information and technologies enabling people; now RIAA is my best friend

Big tech will enable access to free information and will help people reach new heights. Do you see how wrong that sounds?

quaintdev··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
It's just sad that this is the top comment on Hacker News. Why are we giving free pass to these tech companies? Why are we trusting these CEOs when they have repeatedly broken laws? Remember Aaron Swartz and the fate he suffered? Why is big tech getting away with so much more?

quaintdev··on Flock worker calls police on reporter filming public camera installation
It's kind of ironic that US built the infrastructure(adtech, social media) to track people around the world on the Internet and now their own people are getting tracked in real life.
quaintdev··on Nitter and XCancel resume service after legal advice
Somebody needs to figure out how to move millions of people from one platform to other. Otherwise we will never get better platforms and our current techlords will keep getting richer.
quaintdev··on VC isn't VC anymore
Sometimes I wonder if people will one day wake up and just ditch all the tech. That's seems to be the only way to be out of this mess.
quaintdev··on Check if a file was made with Claude
> I thought they would just check if the file hash exists on their end

That would invalidate the hash on minor changes. Too much effort and not enough return.

quaintdev··on Claude: System Prompts
I understand this is not enough but I don't see a story here that paints AI negatively. If one is posted it gets removed swiftly. And I have seen this happen enough times that I'm considering taking periodic snapshots of the front page and prove this definitively.
quaintdev··on Claude: System Prompts
Offtopic. I have a concern that this forum is removing stories that have negative connotation on AI.

Few days back, I posted an article[1] that was about how AI threatens natural resources for billions. This was from United Nations and it was flagged. I did not think much about it until I saw two other stories [2] & [3] today that were doing fairly good on front page but they suddenly disappeared. They are not even on 2nd or 3rd page. I have seen this happening at other times as well but did not document it. Just thought you all should know about this.

I was going to create Tell HN thread but I thought the same would happen with it too. I am pretty sure this thread is not going anywhere so I'm posting my concern here.

I remeber using this when it was Java applet. Now he has converted everything to JavaScript for everyone to use. What a legend!

quaintdev··on The AI Demand Bubble
I'm seeing this guy everywhere. He was on Bloomberg a day ago and then on another channel and now here. I'm curious why there are not more people like him voicing their concerns. Makes you wonder if he is completely wrong.
quaintdev··on First atmosphere found on Earth-like planet in habitable zone of distant star
If we design a probe that travels at speed of light it would reach there in 48 years and it would send back what it's seen after another 48 years. It would take multiple generations of scientists to work on this project. The longest we have worked on, are Voyager projects. Can we expect that level of commitments from our governments or corporations? Voyager became successful because people could see distant futures. We can barely plan few years ahead.
quaintdev··on Leave Me Behind
Yes this is the one.
quaintdev··on Leave Me Behind
Whenever this topic comes up I am reminded of the black and white picture of all the scientist of 19th century together. Each individual in that photo had contributed something to human knowledge. It feels like in 19th century we believed in our scientists and advancing our knowledge. I feel today celebrities are given more importance than our scientists. The best minds of our century are focused on extracting value from rest of the population.
quaintdev··on Google changes its search box
The other day I found a comment here on HN and I wanted to know if it's true. I asked Gemini and here is the conversation https://gemini.google.com/share/2c1089ac6fd6

You can't do something like this with search.

quaintdev··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message

quaintdev··on Show HN: Piruetas – A self-hosted diary app I built for my girlfriend
I used memos which has similar feature set. One day I lost my hard drive and I had to restore from s3. Turns out the backup I had was incompatible with latest version of memos app.

Since then I just gave up on web based tools for notes. I just want to save my notes and be able to recover them when things go wrong. A simple directory with markdown files and hugo blog allows me to do that.

OP how does your app store the journal entries?
