quicon··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
I don't understand why this law would directly affect VLC. As far as I understand they provide the software, not the content. Can someone explain?
quicon··on Computer-Aided Language Development in Nonspeaking Children (1968) [pdf]
Very interesting! Sounds like a field where LLMs could be trully useful, and indeed there is recent literature of the use of generative AI in communication assistance research.
quicon··on GIMP 3.2 released
I find Gimp super useful and easy to learn. Using it to edit pdfs generated by NotebookLM is my new way of creating decks and presentations. Thanks for the great work.

The eternal question: is Enshittification imposed by companies for maximizing profits or just a consumers choice?

quicon··on The real data wall is billions of years of evolution
Interesting wildcard ideas in the article, but I don't think we can understand how the brain works using computing concepts. For a nice discussion on DNA being the "blueprint" of life I recommend Philip Ball's "How life works".

"Trash is an inescapable element of the human condition."

It is an inescapable element of the current consumerism economical model, but it should'nt be of the human condition.

Congratulations, I really enjoyed it. I never play videogames and I'm on mobile, but I engaged instantly.
quicon··on Ente: Open-Source, E2E Encrypted, Google Photos Alternative
I'm a customer of Ente since more than a year ago. I transferred my 30K photos from Google Photos without a problem. Very happy with this product. While some functionalities where missing at the beginning (powerful editor, sharing, collaborating, search) the Mobile and desktop apps have improved a lot, and continue to do so. Today, I do not miss Google Photos.
quicon··on Browser extensions are underrated: the promise of hackable software (2019)
"Computing is still young, and platforms are changing quickly. Modern browser extensions and smartphone platforms have only been around for about a decade. These platforms will evolve, and there will be new platforms after them, and we will get to collectively decide how open they will be."

I really like this final comment. As a non expert in computing, I also often think about how young is this field, and I fantasize about how it will evolve, hopefully towards a more accessible and open ecosistem.

quicon··on New pipeline makes valuable organic acid from plants–saving money and emissions
Based on technological advances and an increased need for renewable intermediates in different application fields, BASF and Corbion Purac have been working on the development of biobased succinic acid since 2009.

quicon··on Why is Spotify not implementing this?
I'm curious about the real reason they are not able to prioritize the 5th most voted idea. Seems easy to do, and it would convert Spotify into a home music system. While I don't know much about computers I suspect its because they are not sure they could stop some users from using this to share the account outside their home. Otherwise, I can not think of any other reason.
quicon··on Temporary ban on behavioural advertising on Facebook and Instagram
I wonder if it would be possible to make unsolicited advertisement illegal. Something difficult to imagine in the world we live in, but I believe it could be possible: - no ads in the public space - magazines and newspapers with 2 versions: with ads (lower price) and without ads (higher price) - TV and radio: special channels only for ads - internet: banners are blank and marked as Ad, you can only see them if you click on them. Wishful thinking?

quicon··on Solar-powered headphones
I bought the Urbanista headphones mentioned in the article. That was 6 months ago, I've used them daily indoors for meetings and listening to music, and I had to charge them with a cable only once in those six months. My desk is by a window and I live in Barcelona, so the headphones get quite a lot of indirect sunlight. Still, they feel like magic to me.

quicon··on An Analysis of Pre-Installed Android Software
Page 69: Thanks to the openness of the Android ecosystem, mobile device vendors can build and sell smart phones and other mobile devices using their own custom versions of Android. Most of these custom versions deviate significantly from Google’s official Android Open Source Project (AOSP): in addition to various visual and functional changes to the base OS, vendors add proprietary applications (apps hereafter) to their firmware, and sometimes even add custom (often unknown) certificates to the system’s root certificate store. In fact, recent anecdotal evidence has revealed that pre-installed apps can put, intentionally or not, user’s privacy and security at risk. This is especially concerning for lesser-known brands producing lower-end devices for whom preserving user privacy might not be high on the priority list. In this extended abstract, we present our methodology to explore the complex and diverse ecosystem of Android pre-installed apps as well as our preliminary results.
