qull··on Linux Kernel Has Been Forcing Different Behavior for Processes Starting with “X”
That all may be true, and be even more worrying.
qull··on Twitter Suspends Kathy Griffin After She Changed Her Handle to ‘Elon Musk’
Wow, all these Hateful elon comments might be warranted, but are not what I though HN was about. Maybe this isnt the right forum to have actual discussions anymore.
qull··on I don't understand why we throw away perfectly working things
A small dumpster.
qull··on Qatar intelligence operation against FIFA officials
This needs to be bigger news. I never see this stuff covered and its absolutely insane what is going on.
qull··on Twitter handles engaging in impersonation will be permanently suspended
This looks like it applies mostly to the blue checks. Having an unobvious verified parody account does raise issues, but its hard to know exactly where to draw the line.
qull··on NASA puts jet propulsion lab on blast over Psyche mission failures
If function means marketing in this context, ill see myself out.
qull··on Context to Twitter's 2023 advertisers issues
Is this considered a constructive comment on HN?
qull··on Ask HN: Have you ever experienced eBay refusing to pay you
Yup, had to sue them then suddenly my funds were availabe again. Should have just taken them to court anyway in retrospect. I only sbop there as a last resort and will never sell there again after over 45k in sales. They actively hate their sellers from what I can tell.
qull··on Productivity has fallen, and experts are puzzled. I’m not. We’re all just tired
Most work cannot be done remotely. You are in a tech bubble. A majority of people have to be present to do things.
qull··on Free returns may soon be a thing of the past as retailers roll stricter policies
Free returns are the only thing overcoming my reluctance to shop online. Retailers that discontinue it will see massive sales drops. Hell, even with returns I am sick of having to return so many counterfiet and damaged items. Arguing with someone who is not even speaking their born language is unduly frusturating each time amzn borks my order.
qull··on Privately-Owned Rail Cars
This was the percursor to private jets.
qull··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
So she is claiming the flat corprate style, but with more saturation, as her own? Thats ballsy. It's a style for sure, but one based on looking oversimplified and generic imo. No suprise its easy to emulate, and a common averaging result. Its not as likely an actually distinct style, unless massively popular, would have this issue. That said, the greater question is no less valid; what elemens of style do we own, and how will ownership manifest moving forward when many new works use ai images as a starting poit, which are then based on other artists work, some of them being ai generated. Will it become a feedback loop sooner, or later, and what will that look like?
qull··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
Thats a reducto ad absrudium at best. While you have a point, schools and even museums are generally compensated for providing these training models to the public, to look at it in a ml way.
qull··on Can Elon Musk Make the Math Work on Owning Twitter? It’s Dicey
You dont really think elon himself is solving those problems do you? He is a showrunner not the person doing the engineering.
qull··on Elon's first big move: pay to remain verified on Twitter
It wasn't exactly free, but a crony system from what I can tell. Honestly feels way too cheap at 5$ for what it is and the unjustified weight it carries.
qull··on The Essential Philip K. Dick
1. There was no workaround published when he commented. 2. Why not just use the working workaround link in the first place?
qull··on Russia tries to impose switch to Linux from Windows
I wonder what effect this will have on the gnu/linux community. Will this be a chilling effect, or will there be a boom in updates and software as they transition?

Sidenote, if you are a project maintainer, please do not cripple the worlds use of your code because you disagree with the conflict, as it rather hurts us all.

qull··on The Year of the Femcel
There are a class of women who have made their politics their image and men want no part in it. Their dating is usually reserved for people of their percieved ingroup, of which men can constitute a vanishingly small part. Unwilling to date outside that group is the biggest issue, with their ingroup signalling to other groups being a secondary hurdle. Hence the recent rise of neo-trad signalling by otherwise non traditional persons (for dating). Its not a new problem, but its current incarnation sure looks weird.
qull··on Ask HN: Would you switch to iOS if Apple allowed independent browser engines?
Nope. Still too closed.
qull··on Ask HN: Ways to make and old car safer?
You can install a rollcage so that is not tHe case, but not in all cars, and they have their own issues. Generally when you have a cage, you also want a 4 5 or 6 point restraint, making it impractical for a daily driver. Nevermind that you now need new seats, and the seats mean you need a detachable steering wheel to get into, and there goes your airbag.
qull··on Ask HN: Ways to make and old car safer?
You are overestimating most modern safety tech. Its made first and foremost to pass tests, not to explicitly save your life. That said, I drive a pre airbag car and treat it like riding a motorcycle.
qull··on What’s the Best Base Layer Fabric? Wool vs. Alpaca vs. Polyester
The Author missed the point of merino wool and moisture. Wool keeps you warm even when wet, polyester does not. Personally I find the anti odor properties of all wools to be their biggest draw, and polys greatest issue. b'But for base layers specifically, when you get sweaty in the winter in polyester you risk the sweat then freeze feedback loop.
qull··on Ask HN: What is the best effective possesion one can have now?
Mindset. Imagine you are made destitute and thrown on the street. Even without connections, a former billionare will rise faster and easier than someone used to poverty. Knowledge is secondary and requires that same mindset to make use of. Of course money alone doesn't grant the mindset, but those with it seem to rub off and consider things differently. Such as Creating Wealth rather than Looking for a Job or handout.
qull··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Many twitter staffers seem willing and motivated to sabatouge the new owner over purely political issues. A few have even suggested it on their own twitter accounts. Elon is polarizing and that leads to both more challenges and more opprotunities.
qull··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
Mazdas higher end cars are pretty nice. And like anothother commenter mentioned about subaru, they are a smaller company who still makes most of their cars domestically (japan) and seems to care about quality. I will warn their pait always seems a bit thin, so get a clear cover if you do a lot of highway or dirt roads. They still use buttons for nearly everything even when they have screens.
qull··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
Its the law in some european countries, Somewhat rare in the usa.
qull··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
Analog potentiometers is what we all want. The worst are the rotary encoders (infinity knobs) that glitch when you turn them fast, like trying to turn down the radio your kid left on full blast, only to have it do nothing or actually turn it up instead.
qull··on Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches
That is patently untrue. Electronic locks use the same latches and manual ones, just activated by a solenoid, easily defeated with... a magnet. The attack surface of a mechanical lock exists, bit at least has some mitications. Electronic locks seldom have any.
qull··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
You hit the nail on the head. Mess or not, it was a controlled mess with people getting to shape not just their message, but in many cases actual public debate.
qull··on Ask HN: Will Meta's virtual reality bet succeed?
It is, by most accounts a worse vrchat, and on a dying, largely despised url. VR (moreso AR) has a future, meta (in any form similar to how it currently exists) most likely does not.
