rafale··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
I don't think NSA meddles in politics. CIA sure. NSA is more about communications, hacking, signal intelligence and spying in general. They give you the information. If you want to do dirty stuff with that info, the CIA is there for that.
rafale··on UAE to leave OPEC
Quite impressive how they folded. UAE bluff was called spectacularly and I think that, in the future, looking back, that event might mark the beginning of the end of their geopolitical ambitions.
rafale··on GPT-5.5
Someone leaked nuclear secrets to the Soviet Union. What are the chances that someone leaks the "weights" of a (near-)singularity model?

rafale··on Crypto got everything it wanted. Now it's sinking
Most crime is conducted in fiat money.
rafale··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Maybe they were on a slight up slope. If the headlights were auto leveling it will fix many of the issues people complain about.
rafale··on Peter Thiel sells off all Nvidia stock, stirring bubble fears
Did he close his position or just shutdown the fund?
rafale··on James Watson has died
If you say person X thought Y was true, ask yourself if Y was true would you accept it? If the answer is no you are not ready for this kind of discussion.

As for whether it's true or not, let's just say we don't know for sure because scientists either are not allowed or don't want to research this question.

rafale··on Addiction Markets
Ferrari cars hold their value pretty well if you buy them slightly used.

Either way, Ferrari is selling cars. Not dreams of riches.

rafale··on Addiction Markets
Gamblers know the odds are stacked against them yet they end up stuck in a psychological prison within their own brain that they can't escape from even if they realize what they do is harmful.

Maybe a better law: check id, you are not allowed to take from any gambler more than 10 bets a year and no bet can be over 1k.

For big gamblers, we can have "qualified gamblers" rules like we do for qualified investors.

Funny how we don't let average people invest in some stuff but we let them gamble.

For offshore gambling pursue them aggressively if they serve US clients.

rafale··on A $6B Nuclear U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier 'Sunk' by $100M Diesel 'AIP' Sub
That's one way to nerf them, force them to fight in situations they would never find themselves in.

In real life, if they can't neutralize the threat in BVR they just turn around and run before getting in range.

Their stealth allows them to get the enemy in range before the enemy has them in range. It's like a boxer with a long reach: jab and move.

rafale··on IP over Lasers
Every year new engineers and enthusiasts need to be exposed to cutting edge technologies through hands-on introductions like these.
rafale··on Unlocking a Million Times More Data for AI
Didn't a hedge fund publish data encrypted with homomorphic encryption to run an open competition to see how can build the best trading AI. The encryption allow them to keep the sensitive data private.
rafale··on Crypto founder Do Kwon pleads guilty to US fraud charges
How much money he had when he was caught? How much you profited usually makes a difference in sentencing.
rafale··on High-Fidelity Simultaneous Speech-to-Speech Translation
What about brain development and general intelligence. Knowledge will always have a value, or else we become slaves to the machine.
rafale··on Jury orders NSO to pay $167M for hacking WhatsApp users
They knowingly attacked and destroyed USS Liberty in 1967 and didn't face any consequences.

Sometimes I wonder what's so special about Israel that they keep getting away with everything.

rafale··on California overtakes Japan to become the world's fourth largest economy

rafale··on Bybit loses $1.5B in hack but can cover loss, CEO confirms
They are very capital inefficient and still can fail during black swan events.
rafale··on Hezbollah pager explosions kill several people in Lebanon
It's unreasonable to expect a small companies to have rogue nation states in their threat model. Apple, Microsoft, ... yeah but not a smaller business.
rafale··on Streaming every NFL game this season requires 7 different services, costs $2,500
Or you can vote with your wallet and boycott the games. They will eventually offer a solution when nobody is watching the games.
rafale··on A tiny ultrabright laser that can melt steel
Efficient market hypothesis proven.
rafale··on Boeing missing key elements of safety culture: FAA report
The barrier of entry is much higher with commercial aviation. You can get started with a lousy car but a lousy plane will never be acceptable. The MAX fiasco could have killed Boeing. Maybe Boom will succeed by getting its feet wet in the supersonic flight niche. Time will tell.
rafale··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
So would Google or any obscure forums. Just like fraud, the optimal amount of negativity in a technology is never zero. Gotta accept some amount of issues to maximize the benefits to drawbacks ratio.
rafale··on Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
Why not just let the ads play per the social contract we have. Ask yourself, if everyone did what I do, would it ruin the service I enjoy for everyone? If the answer is yes, then stop doing it.

It's better to just stop using YouTube than install these hacks.

rafale··on Life expectancy for men in US falls to 73 – six years less than women, study
We shouldn't focus on the delta (the outcome) but the roots. If men take more risks and die sooner, so be it. If women get jobs that pay less and earn less, so be it. However, men should be able to take less dangerous jobs. And women should be able to take higher paying jobs. (I believe this is already the case) We should just be asking ourselves: "are we not limiting people's freedom, regardless of their sex, race, religion, <insert any other arbitrary way to partition a group>" If the answer is no, then we are good to go, even if we observe a delta in the outcomes (e.g. more blacks in NBA than whites... white are allowed to participate just as much, so the outcome doesn't matter).
rafale··on Nvidia Trains LLM on Chip Design
Also a natural byproduct of the association between intelligence on one hand and freedom and rights on the others. Plants don't get any rights. Ants a little bit more. Dogs and dolphins even more so. Then humans. And then... a new class of intelligence as it appears will demand those same rights, in proportion to their intellect.
rafale··on Nvidia Trains LLM on Chip Design
Humans get a bit of training data. If a baby is left to itself during the formative years, they won't develop speech, social skills, reasoning skills, ... and they will be handicapped for the rest of their life, unable to recover from the neglect.

And the rest of our training data, we make it as we go. From interacting with the real world.

rafale··on Nvidia Trains LLM on Chip Design
You could have said the same about every catastrophe that got out of control. Chances are they will eventually gain unauthorized access to something and we will either get lucky or we get the real life Terminator series (minus time travel so we are f**ed)
rafale··on BitVM: Compute Anything on Bitcoin [pdf]
Can you please recommend a book on ZK proofs for someone with basic CS level understanding of algorithms and data structures? I would like to understand it better and use it in dapps. I feel like it completely change the relation between what's data and what's computation, a bit how matter and energy was linked in physics.
