raffael_de··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
sorry, but you are really naive. php was peak engineering compared to the contrived layers of llm generated executable pseudocode we are about to build upon for the foreseeable future. php is opcode running in a C/C++ driven virtual machine. what llms are spitting out is statistically inspired plagiarisations void of sense that linguistically abstract non-linguistical concepts chaining all that crap then build towers of it and nobody will be able to even reason about what's going on without adding more llm to the mix. think apollo guidance computer but 1TB of code.
raffael_de··on After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home
if you replace each part of a trolley - one part at a time over the course of a quarter decade ... is it still the same trolley it was in the beginning?
raffael_de··on After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home
i would think that a man like him doesn't really have a natural concept of "home".

raffael_de··on macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL
but you can fold the iphone now ... o.O
raffael_de··on eBay Restricts Listings of Radio Equipment, but Exempts Ham-Band-Only Gear
almost, but not quite ... the difference between those is that the stereotypical ham radio enthusiast is obsessed with following regulations and laws to the T. while the stereotypical hacker is all about gray zones, loop holes and questioning rules.
raffael_de··on QGIS enacts moratorium on AI contributions
wouldn't it make more sense to tighten the rules and requirements for contribution? how would you even identify AI assistance if the result is immaculate? it seems to me that banning AI is conflating low-quality or low-effort with using AI. I understand those correlate statistically and also causally ... but latter only for specific lazy cohorts. if the AI assisted contribution is of high quality why would you ban it? especially given that you couldn't even identify it or would they still discard it because some comments exhibit Claudisms? tests, linting, more tests, style guide abidance, even more tests and banning contributors who fail to deliver.

Though, originally that quote is from Ronald McDonald.

"you mean one tick is a microsecond?"
raffael_de··on What should we tell our students?
and that generation was educated without AI. going to be interesting how future generations of mathematicians will fare who have been using AI from day 1. I suspect they'll be simply much worse at math.
raffael_de··on ADHD as a circadian rhythm disorder: evidence and implications for chronotherapy (2025)
being a night owl isn't the same as suffering from circadian rhythm disorder. it just means that you are a night person. the suffering happens if you are a larch but live like a night owl because your circadian rhythm is messed up. and adhd messes that rhythm up.
raffael_de··on Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits
I disagree. There are obviously many good reasons to turn your back towards society. The real issue is that it probably won't work - number 1 are the economic realities of maintaining self-sufficiency - number 2 is society will come to haunt you eventually ... they'll build something next to your hideout, they'll find a reason why you broke some building code or law, they'll come to rob you at night or when you're out, they expect a smartphone registered mailbox 2.0 with an AI account paid with a bitcoin credit card and you have to register for that in person at some office etc ... number 3 is you probably overestimated your motivation to actually live or die with the consequences of checking out from society.
raffael_de··on Former German spy chief arrested for attempted treason
Azerbaijan doesn't give a rat's *** about German state secrets. :) It's either BS or they served as a proxy.
raffael_de··on I am done with this shit
doesn't make sense timing-wise ... to train as a dentist takes longer than the LLM-hype has been around.
raffael_de··on Why isn't mutable a subtype of immutable, or vice versa?
as far as my set theoretical intuition goes, immutable has to be a subtype of mutable, if anything.
raffael_de··on HarnessTax: How Much Does the Harness Matter for Coding Agents?
> inventing new “fuzzy” regex

not RegEx ... more like a "fuzzy" DSL.

raffael_de··on HarnessTax: How Much Does the Harness Matter for Coding Agents?
> or make them similar.

identical. similar is what you tried and it didn't work.

raffael_de··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
it's much easier than that. just go on osm.org, create account, click edit and then ... DONT edit ... but complete the tutorial offered right there ... then edit. anyway, it's fun to keep the neighbourhood up-to-date.
raffael_de··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
what you seem to look for is a book about psychoacoustics. but even on that level you'll just have to accept that for some unknown reason humans consider certain pitch ratios as pleasant and even those that sound unpleasant have their place to express dissonance and tension and it's culturally dependent also. eventually there will be first attempts at a general music theory of which the western key based frameworks are special cases.
raffael_de··on iPhone Duo
to sell a phone for such a ridiculous price you need to make it as obvious as possible - a folded phone is pretty obvious - now people can buy it as a status symbol. what's the point of a status symbol if not everybody around you immediately recognizes the item as very expensive. there you go.
raffael_de··on I resigned from Anthropic today
> Let's just for the sake of discussion assume that one time in the future, near or distant, AI manages to become sentient. And like other forms of life, its main motivation is survival

An AI doesn't need to be sentient to exhibit behavior that looks like genuine motivation or is equivalent to striving for survival.

raffael_de··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
the trailer looks like a remake of the shining and shelley duvall has her hair dyed blonde.
raffael_de··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
possible that they just changed it for mobile.
raffael_de··on Nitter has more working instances than before the takedowns
oh, that's great. i thought the project is dead.

how would you (EDIT: publicly) host such a nitter instance while avoiding the risk of legal consequences?

since old.reddit (EDIT: on mobile) is closed for visitors without an account it would be great if there was also a neddit project.

raffael_de··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
hot take: tim cook could sell out apple only because google sold out android. it's like everybody is selling each other and their grandmas out these days.
raffael_de··on “I just chose words carefully”
the distinctive cadence is not a direct consequence from eliminating widows but from the mental process used to achieve this efficiently. language goes from natural fluidity to stacking Lego bricks.
raffael_de··on Defrag98: Windows 98 Disk Defragmenter Simulator Online
