If the death penalty deterred anyone, there only would have been a single death penalty ever (or only one for every sort of crime).
ragebol··on Ledger confirms spy chip implant behind wallet crypto thefts
Even if you have perfect provenance over every component you put in, the moment it leaves your factory to be shipped to customers, it can be tampered with.

Even if you would hand it from the factory straight to a customer that comes physically to your factory to pick it up, then you would still require some sort of ID to know that that person is in fact the customer I suppose. Which removes some of the advantages of cryptocurrencies

I don't think it's a hostility to tech but different values that value consumer rights more than it values 'move fast and break things'. We have good things here and we don't like someone breaking them.

Problem is that we thought the US was 'cool', with US movies, music, digital services, cooler than our own and thus we helped give the US the lead. The US has lost it's coolness though, now we just think it's creepy.

Might be the case, but that doesn't refute the argument? Maybe an empty reserve is even better for the (US) oil corps, financially.

ragebol··on JetBrains Air: A System of Products for Agentic Software Development
OpenCode fixed it for me, I just asked it to set up itself as an ACP server for Jetbrains Air. Running with that now.

Hadn't used ACP yet.

I want to like this, but not being able to plug this into eg. OpenRouter or a local agent is a bummer.

So widespread? Doesn't look like vandalism to me
ragebol··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Depends on how it's done I think: breaking stuff vs sitting on it. And sitting on a highway is also quite visibly claiming the action, that is not clear in this case.

If this is XR, would be very dumb and against their message.

More akin to the German verb 'reden' I think: talk. It's a talk from the throne.

That we don;'t understand it is not an excuse, it's all the more reason to not let these things roam freely, with this amount of potential to do damage.

ragebol··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
My electricity contract in the Netherlands here is on a "Dynamisch tarief", with the most direct translation being "Dynamic tariff". It means I pay/get a different price for my power every 15 minutes.

"Tarief" just means price of mainly a service.

I think 'dynamic rate' is the proper translation for the US?

Being dependent on (cheap) oil can make economic sense as well. Unless you get cut off all of a sudden. Depending on local energy might make more sense in the long term. also for factor other than the economy.

> used public funds to make cheaper versions in the hope of leading the markets, including by being artificially more affordable while there is any competition

If you replace 'public' with 'VC', isn't that the exact same as the US does in Silicon Valley?

I read new truck sales in China are about 30% electric and climbing. Apparently it does make sense for them
ragebol··on Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban?
Fair enough. My comment was however asking about the difference in climate damage from local vs cloud inference, is either better in that specific regard. Or even the energy usage between the two.

As for ethics, i don't see a meaningful difference between the two. Local strips out a big-tech middleman perhaps.

ragebol··on Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban?
> If Proposal H has a weakness, it's that it does not distinguish between local and cloud-based LLMs

Is the energy usage so different between local and cloud inference? Both require electricity, the local option even more than the better optimized cloud variant even perhaps. How either is powered makes the crucial difference I suppose. Both can potentially run on solar as well as gas or nuclear.

It's the training that takes the most energy, and that needs to happen for locally running or cloud models regardless.

What am I missing here? EDIT:

Proposal H mentions "LLM usage accelerates the destruction of our ecosystem"

I was thinking solely about energy usage, but there is of course also water usage. A local setup is not water-evaporator cooled most likely.

I read the article, but still, how can anyone making such a mistake be deemed sane enough to still be allowed to drive a car?

Alas, I'm far from 85, hard to imagine making that kind of error.

How does pone drive 20 hours in the wrong direction, when trying to go to an appointment 19km away?

What must go wrong when you are allowed to drive and not realize that mistake after at most an hour or so?

ragebol··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
Ah, thanks, had to be something like that indeed. Had a hard time imagining putting work into an ICE and getting anything useful out.
ragebol··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
I don't see why that would be the case. Why is the 20% of eg. an internal combustion engine coupled to the 500% COP of a heat pump? I see a vague connection as an ICE also uses expanding gasses etc, but that's about it. What am I missing?
ragebol··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
True. For residential heating, heat pumps make for a similar ratio as they make 3-5 units of hear for 1 unit of electric energy, depending on conditions.

The challenge in heating is industrial heat, which is much hotter. Can't do that with heat pumps (yet?)
