rainclouds··on 'A hostile state': Why some travellers are avoiding the US
I think Disney is nicer in other countries these days. Could still make a good trip elsewhere.
rainclouds··on Ozempic is causing trouble on Savile Row
So doing the clinical trial publicly for the rest of us…
rainclouds··on Complete hardware and software setup for running Deepseek-R1 locally
I’ve got a terabyte of DDR4, and a bunch of old thread rippers. They can take 256 each and 8 channel.
rainclouds··on Complete hardware and software setup for running Deepseek-R1 locally
Hardware requirements? I think I can hit the memory bandwidth building from parts I have in my house. Maybe even 2x. Asking for fun not profit.
rainclouds··on Higher potassium intake at dinner linked to fewer sleep disturbances – study
Sadly I don’t think French fries have the same effect.
rainclouds··on Psilocybin bests SSRI for major depression in first long-term comparison
Psilocybin has always made me not want to drink for extended periods of time after use. Always saw that as a great benefit.
rainclouds··on Americans dying younger than their English-speaking peers worldwide
We already have more % population in jail than any other country. Mostly for drugs. The social cost is much less for getting in trouble for drugs in the US, but the incarceration rate is really high.
rainclouds··on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X and Ryzen 9 9900X Deliver Excellent Linux Performance
I want to replace my 5950x, but that’s a huge TDP jump. Be interesting to see how well it down clocks.
rainclouds··on Fake job interviews are securities fraud
Also tons of places that interview then say they don’t have a slot.

Seems too easy to be abused.

rainclouds··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
Wow that is great. I’ve been told that was impossible by several cards and ended up reissuing.
rainclouds··on Your dishwasher is better than you think (tips, tricks, and how they work)
I’m looking for an ultrasonic cleaner. Did you settle on a brand or model?
rainclouds··on Ozempic and Wegovy Might Be Supercharging Your Taste Buds
Every time I leave the US for over a few weeks and come home it’s super notable and frankly disgusting.
rainclouds··on Gamers Nexus: Asus Scammed Us [video]
I’ve been all asrock and asus for a long time. Asrock had been the better value for me for awhile now. Think I started using them for the original threadrippers. Been happy.
rainclouds··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
There is someone renting a room around Mount Fuji on AirBNB that advertises themselves as a systems engineer with fiber in the middle of the woods. Sounded like a great place to work to me!
rainclouds··on CISA directs federal agencies to disconnect Ivanti products by Friday midnight
Cyber crime definitely exists without incompetence.

Defense is a costly vast landscape compared to attacking. Sure incompetence causes issues and major drives my blood pressure, but the problem doesn’t go away if incompetence goes away.

rainclouds··on Tell HN: California's Gig Worker Law Might Go National
Same boat. Wonder if we can reclassify in any more beneficial way. Perhaps they should create something.
rainclouds··on Tell HN: Google-Wide Layoffs
This hits home. I wish I knew the company now.
rainclouds··on Nvidia RTX 5000 Ada 32GB Workstation GPU Review
Only reason I still have a nvidia card is the VR issues. Unless it’s been fixed recently they can’t compete in high end VR.
rainclouds··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
Looks like a good way to lose a weekend.
rainclouds··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
Critical.

I’d like my data to stay local.

I probably don’t need cloud processing for any regular usage.

The privacy to life benefit equation is broken in society atm.

This will change.

rainclouds··on Why does sleep become more elusive as we age?
I struggle with this as well and decided the only thing I can control is wake up, so I stretch those into 45-90 minute periods using increasing music volume to wake up.

Having a time period to wake up makes it more likely I fall asleep in a predictable time period. Going to sleep at X to wake up at Y is all fail for me.

rainclouds··on Ask HN: What work/office purchase transformed your life?
That dual audio feature is why I own one.
rainclouds··on Ask HN: Tech Things to See in Tokyo?
You can stay in this area for good rates in off season. I walked less than 2 blocks to the tree with great Airbnb hosts 2 times last year. Walking distance to lots of other things too. I walked pretty close to aki from there without thinking about it wondering over a 1/4 day.
rainclouds··on Seagate Unveils Exos X24 24TB and 28 TB: Setting the Stage for HAMR HDDs
Exactly. I’ve got a stack for X16s in FreeNAS fronted with tons of NVMe. Prices are good for building a high perf home SAN.

Power usage.. we just won’t measure that part…

rainclouds··on AMD Introduces New AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000/Pro 7000 WX
I’ve been sitting on Gen1/2 waiting for more non pro as well. We needed it this gen else I’d have to go Ryzen for lab updates.
rainclouds··on Ask HN: Tech Things to See in Tokyo?
Teamlabs is worth checking out.
rainclouds··on Detroit man steals 800 gallons using Bluetooth to hack gas pumps at station
Detroit downtown is nice, the Lions win games, what alternate reality is this?
rainclouds··on Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools
Turning red is accurate /verified.

The only place I’ve personally witnessed wide spread mass transit use for youth in school is Japan. Totally normal and feels safe.

rainclouds··on Google has a secret browser hidden inside the settings
I was a student at a boarding school in the 90s that left WinPopup installed. I quickly found it and taught the whole campus. They tried to remove it but we had backups by that point. Then we found the teacher access internet proxy which had none of the student restrictions and shared it with everyone via WinPopup… I told the staff when I graduated.
rainclouds··on The military is using e-girls to recruit Gen Z into service
Like we make that choice. Drawn in with sex and sent to die for transistors seems Pretty accurate if you look at past utilization for resources.
