ramgine··on I toured Unitree's factory. I'm more bullish on the West
The guy from the Smarter Every Day channel ran into your final point when he was trying to create a grill scrubber. It's a fascinating series.
ramgine··on Shrinking NixOS RAM footprint and resource requirements to the bare minimum
Wow these are great. Especially beszel
ramgine··on My Favourite Laptop
I keep looking to see if there’s something better than my m1 air 13”. Even this post had me looking. But the m1 is “triple” the multicore speed of an 11th gen intel in a 12” Lenovo. And almost double the battery life with no active cooling. Luckily I ordered 16 gigs of ram. Should have ordered 256gb storage but I can live with it.
ramgine··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
That’s a good requirement I didn’t think of that. A bad TN panel will make me sell or toss a laptop regardless of spec. Meanwhile I’ll put up with slower speeds if the screen is nice
ramgine··on Proton to 'Re-Interview' Staff About AI to See Who Gets to Keep Their Job
The C suite does not understand the technology they just listen to the hype. It’s like using AI as a subject matter expert and knowing when it’s wrong, to using it as a novice, the models are so confident when they’re wrong users will believe anything it says.
ramgine··on New iPad mini
I’ve had a side quest of finding a true Linux tablet with cell service with similar battery life to my iPad. They don’t seem to exist, or there’s one or two that cost double my iPad. It’s unfortunate
ramgine··on The Making Of Super Mario 64 – full Giles Goddard interview (2001)
The Masters of Doom book was pretty good if you want a bit of drama. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masters_of_Doom
ramgine··on The Making Of Super Mario 64 – full Giles Goddard interview (2001)
It seems these days AAA games are blockbuster movie level production
ramgine··on I paid people to try and follow my README
My boss gives me shit regularly for not remembering things. He doesn’t seem to understand that when you manage environments in all three clouds, storage arrays in four different countries from different manufacturers, four on prem virtual clusters, Active Directory, entra, etc that you can’t remember everything all the time if you haven’t touched it in a while.

I started a daily journal when my team’s workload got to be so much that we can’t remember everything. It helps, but even going back to it weeks later there were things I did not write down because I assumed I’d remember them later.

I’ve since gotten better at being more comprehensive, and trying to think in the “how to make a sandwich” way of instruction. I’m not being condescending to my future self, I know my future self has too much shit to mange to remember it all.

ramgine··on Pi 1.0
Our architecture team started with vscode and windows because it’s “how it’s been done” but within a year they all migrated to ghostty or another terminal on Mac because it’s so much faster and efficient.
ramgine··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I use Raycast and it’s much better than spotlight imo
ramgine··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
The magic that is opex compared to capex. I'm sure it makes sense to some bean counter somewhere in the company, but for us who manage the resources it's always a loss.
ramgine··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
I got my current job because I could lead the hyper-v to VMware migration project. Just this year I led the VMware to hyper-v migration project. VMware was such a great product (although a bit cumbersome in the VCF environment I managed). It’s really unfortunate it went the way of Broadcom. In comparison Hyper-v feels like a typical Microsoft product. A bunch of different tools created by different teams to do tasks that feel bolted on and afterthoughts. I have to run FCM to manage the nodes? But I run HVM to manage the roles? But there’s no overall resource management like VMware vsphere or proxmox does natively?

I’ve quietly built a proxmox cluster in our environment for semi-prod workloads for when the inevitable windows host has issues.

ramgine··on My local model setup on an M4 Pro Mac Mini
With which model. I have a 3060 with a bunch of system ram
ramgine··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
Americans don’t bother to read or learn from history
ramgine··on Scrap (2006)
I’ve had a perpetual back injury because my small business owner boss had his tech support people move a piano of his while on the clock. Then he has a doctor buddy of his look at it and try to tell me I have hepatitis. Which multiple follow ups proved I didn’t. Don’t do labor outside of what’s expected for the position.
ramgine··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Think it’s better to travel without a phone at all and buy one when arriving in the us? Problematic I guess with everything being digital
ramgine··on Hello, me. It's been a while
I wear ANC headphones most of the time and especially in public because people are too loud. I have nothing playing, it’s just quieter ambient noise.
ramgine··on The climate benefits of retiring an operational combustion engine vehicle
Changing a timing belt is not serious maintenance. Just something that needs to be done at 100k. I just did the timing belt and water pump on my 300k tundra over the course of a weekend for 100 bucks.
ramgine··on Donate to GrapheneOS
I switch between an iPhone and a GrapheneOS phone. I have a garmin watch and never thought to use it for tap to pay. I’m dumb. Setting this up this evening
ramgine··on GrapheneOS Defends Data-Wiping Function That Blocked US Border Search
Unfortunately, these days with how governments want to spy on everything your phone is your biggest vulnerability. Better to travel with a dumb phone than something that will send you to jail. Regardless whether it’s wiped or not, depending on the mood of the officer.
ramgine··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
Thanks! I’m getting into cooking and have basic teflon pans (Rachel ray pans given to us by my MIL) and I’m looking to get nice ones and be done with it
ramgine··on First Robotic Satellite Servicer Launched
TIL DARPA is still around. Kind of thought they got the “doge” treatment
ramgine··on Tell HN: Namecheap gave my account to an unverified third party
I got that same email but skimmed it. I guess I need to double check and then move.
ramgine··on Why Sony can't bring back its classic Walkman models
Have you looked at fiio? They’ve been doing it a while and aren’t crazy expensive https://www.fiio.com/player

ramgine··on Worse on Purpose – How Corporate Greed Killed Product Quality – Worse on Purpose
This seems like what he said but less words
ramgine··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
These are great suggestions. It’s what I see pros doing, just really hard to get there.
ramgine··on Show HN: A new kind of FPS aim trainer
I used to play q3l competitively and I can’t imagine trying to get any real results using a gamepad without help. That’s a neat idea.
ramgine··on Watching Tucson's Backyard Birds with Solar-Powered M1 Mac Mini
This is fun! I wonder how difficult it would be to build something solar for just the mini.
ramgine··on GTX 1080s: Testing a Legend
I just threw together my old 1060 in a steamOS - adjacent box running cachyOS. It’s great for couch co-op platformers. The GPUs were overkill for most games then and can still run new indie 2d games now.
