ranbumo··on Oregon becomes first U.S. state to decriminalize possession of all drugs
Consent is a tricky issue when it comes to drugs. You could even argue that consent isn't possible when you are heavily addicted.
ranbumo··on Nokia selected by NASA to build cellular network on the moon
If anything, it should be luna and not moon.
ranbumo··on Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B
You can't mod anything that's on gamepads due to the encrypted filestorage it uses. At least that was the case when I checked last year.
ranbumo··on Nvidia to Acquire Arm for $40B
Yes. It'd have been reasonable to block sales to non eu parties for national security reasons.

Now arm is yet another US company.

ranbumo··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
How many sats in Leo would you need for it to potentially impact launch windows and access to space? Does anyone have any data or speculation on this?
ranbumo··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
All 30-50k satellites? SpaceX and Amazon are sending stuff up now. I expect these numbers to multiply quickly. And not just with US satellites. China and other nations might just send similar numbers up
ranbumo··on How satellite ‘megaconstellations’ will photobomb astronomy images
Is there any expectation that a local in Africa or sea would be able to afford starlink rates? I haven't seen pricing information yet, but I'd be very surprised if that was the case.
ranbumo··on Apple, Epic, and the App Store
20 Billion in 2018, but I read that in a similar thread here and sadly can't remember the source anymore
ranbumo··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A
Size shouldn't be a reason for the battery size. Devices like the redmi 3s had 4k mAh in a smaller device in 2016
ranbumo··on The harmful impact of Audible-exclusive audiobooks
In addition to the other comment: plenty of games are, or at least used to be, available exclusively through steam. Steam doesn't pay for exclusivity, but it still exists
ranbumo··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
I don't see how this qualifies as harmless. He is putting every single employee under economic duress to potentially expose themselves to covid and defy a gov order.
ranbumo··on Chinese military personnel charged for hacking into Equifax
Which is pretty ironic, really. Whoever did the hacking for the US could be charged by China for basically the same thing the DOJ just charged the Chinese hackers for.
ranbumo··on Third fatal Tesla Autopilot crash renews questions about system
We'll have 'full self-driving' in a year, so option 3 is on the table very soon, according to Tesla's marketing.

I assume that this is mostly pr in terms of how autonomous the ai will be once again, but many people may buy it and then get blamed for it when accidents happen.

ranbumo··on Progress has been limited on Germany's shift from nuclear to renewables
When you put it this way, you might as well say that a major accident that takes out half of Western Europe would be neglige in comparison.

German plants are old. There's issues with a few of them. Decommissioning them seems inevitable. The question is whether building new nuclear plants, at probably about 15+ years for the first plant to start operations, is really a better option than investing in renewables?

ranbumo··on The Airbnb Invasion of Barcelona
I wonder whether demand in a city like Barcelona can ever be met without compromising it as a city and zoning a lot of the city centre for hotel usage .. Or whether there's a good alternative to just outright banning Airbnb when rent increases so much that locals can't afford to live in most of the city anymore.
ranbumo··on U.S. Nuclear Power Plants Weren’t Built for Climate Change
Sure, newer plants produce less highly radioactive waste than old ones. Don't those plants also still contaminate their building materials over time, which then results in literal tons of somewhat radioactive waste that also needs to be stored, albeit with less stringent requirements?
