randomNumber7··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
They wait and collect data from their future competitors first.
randomNumber7··on C for Rust programmers
Stuff like this was often done to enforce a minimum IQ.

Very reasonable imo as universitys educated people that get positions with responsibilitys.

randomNumber7··on C for Rust programmers
It is impractical to try to recover/continue your program in an out of memory situation for most programs.

So it is a good advice for beginners.

randomNumber7··on C for Rust programmers
I heard the C++ guys regret defining vector<bool> using 1 bit per value.

Also for most code it will be premature optimization to worry about that.

randomNumber7··on House with 15m underground tunnels for sale for 300k
> being B when you're in deep equity after decades

For elderly people a big house can be a liability. It makes a lot of work and you don't need it once the children move out.

randomNumber7··on When random is not actually random enough
It's basic engineering to do what is necessary for solving a problem. Not more.
randomNumber7··on Mistral Large 4
What reasonable person would define this as fun?
randomNumber7··on Competitive Programmer's Handbook (2018) [pdf]
You give the user access to the software over a web interface. He has never access to the binaries because they are on your servers.

> Marketing decides which company makes it to the phones or PCs.

Right now a big part of LLM market is people using it for professional software development. Most of these users probably care about the quality of the model and also notice it during daily work.

For normal consumers, shure it doesn't matter. In the end the ai summary of google will probably be the most used as they are already exposed to it anyways.

randomNumber7··on Mistral Large 4
I think you misunderstand how data processing works in a LLM. You absolutely can download the weights of a chinese model and run it on hardware you control.
randomNumber7··on Mistral Large 4
Also you can get to jail for making fun of politicians where saying the same thing would be free speech in the US.

Maybe for training big models one can wait for times when the wind is blowing.
randomNumber7··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C
What happens when I put a variable of a struct type that contains a flexible array member on the stack?
randomNumber7··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
> I do not get the connection with a VLA in this context

The article uses a struct with a VLA as the last element.

randomNumber7··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
As far as I know many C programmers think the addition of variable length arrays in C99 was a mistake. What would be the downside of this approach?
randomNumber7··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
> It was not the Jews or the Americans that forced us to do that.

The americans kind of forced you off the russian gas though

> Now everyone is crying about insane fossil fuel prices after our policy for more than a decade was to make fossil fuel non-viable. Pathetic.

I think its not only fossil fuel. Germany's decision to shut down nuclear power plants (while also trying to get to net zero C02 emissions) is outright suicidal imo.

randomNumber7··on Europe's new robotics unicorn: Germany's RobCo hits $1B valuation
> Our industrial and energy policy is that we will become completely dependent on the Middle East, US, Russia and China so we have absolutely no autonomy and no viability. Embarrassing. Pathetic. Shameful.

Germany shutting down nuclear and coal powered plants was their own decision. I kind of agree with your evaluation, but confusingly it seems like they want it like that (?)

Have you ever dug a hole with a shovel?
randomNumber7··on Europe's new robotics unicorn: Germany's RobCo hits $1B valuation
In the end the result is pretty similar as these engines are useless without regular maintenance and the engine manufacturer likely does not give the knowledge away to do it without them.

As far as I know they sell the engines at a loss or breakeven but make money on the service later.

> I would say Germany is a good place if you’re married and have kids. Then you get a lot of subsidies from the government and it’s relatively cheap to raise children in Germany.

The number of newborns in germany last year was lowest since WW2. Seems like most germans don't agree with this assessment.

randomNumber7··on Clef: Open-weight decision models, and new RL fine-tuning platform
I never enjoyed playing ps4 when it is constantly louder than my vacuum cleaner.
randomNumber7··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
> So if Canada tries to make friends with anyone other than the US, it's a hostile act?

If your ex starts dating your best friend directly after breakup, would you consider it a hostile act?

randomNumber7··on US diesel hits record $6 a gallon on Iran supply shock
This caps the amount of CO2 you can emit; which is good :)
randomNumber7··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Idk, to me it looks like the German green party is very anti Russian...
randomNumber7··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Any 2x or 3x cost for the same thing is uncompetitive in a free market.
