randomerr··on Bill Gates is not a fan of cryptocurrencies
Finally Bill and I agree on something other then DOS and MS-BASIC. It may not be for the same reasons (I prefer physical currency and silver for anonymity) but we have a common ground on cryptocurrencies.
randomerr··on O API: an alternative to REST
I've been thinking of something similar. Everything comes into a simple URL as POST request. The request would be structured like to do the complete RUD:

{ "action":"myFunctionName", "state":"READ", "data": { "field1":111, "field2":"two"} }

{ "action":"myFunctionName", "state":"UPDATE", "data": { "field1":111, "field2":"two"} }

{ "action":"myFunctionName", "state":"DELETE", "data": { "field1":111, "field2":"two"} }

{ "action":"myFunctionName", "state":"INSERT", "data": { "field1":111, "field2":"two"} }

The reason this came up is because we have limited access to a client's server. So we setup one script (index.php) that would direct the data to include files.

randomerr··on Why new product launches fail and how to save them
Not to be snarky but a couple of these points could be used on article submitted on Hacker News:

* Speak to your reader (customers) - Engage them here or on other articles to build a following whne you post

* Rebrand or reposition your story (product) - If your target market isn’t ready for your product, perhaps there is an alternative market (website) that is ready for it.

randomerr··on Show HN: Muban – build desktop apps with system webview and native widgets
The description is a little confusing. Is this a Yue(Lue) wrapper for building Electron applications?
randomerr··on The Arctic will never be frozen again
I think saying the Arctic will never be frozen again is a bit dramatic. We're coming out of 1,000 year ice age which means we've, geologically, had an ice age recently. With continual reduction of greenhouse gases by our growing efforts we could be open to a building of the arctic in the next 500-1000.

Changes in any combination of the following could trigger a new ice age: solar radiation levels, volcanic activity, circulation, orbital forces often associated with earthquakes, changes in the global climate, and war resulting in a decrease in the human population. Please read the evidence below and comment if you agree or disagree.

randomerr··on 'We're watching a company explode': is Snapchat becoming irrelevant?
Snap chat was a gimmick: A message/photo/video lasts for a short time and then goes away. That started to loose steam so they went down the route of becoming more like a traditional social network. As the lines blurred between Facebook and Snapchat people decided to start going back to what worked and from Snapchat for the top down. Then the new gimmick networks start getting popular eating away at Snapchat's popularity from the bottom up.

Snapchat is getting eaten away from both ends. And teh bad PR is just next steps.

Snapchat has to do a vertical move. Maybe get into the through-away camera (not the expensive on they tried), cheap Android devices like what TracFone does for quick snaps on the go, or make a partnership with Urbanspoon/Yelp and do a go branded marketing campaign for the best snap with friends.

randomerr··on No playtime for Toys R Us, shuts 200 more stores
Unfortunately it was not surprise to anyone. 95% of the toys that had could be purchased through either Walmart.com or Amazon.com. The only thing you really went there for what the super limited addition Barbie / Star Wars toy. No one goes for Jeffery branded bike anymore.

They stopped most advertising. Their website is 2 generations behind. The loyality program is laughable. The POS's are slow. ToysRUs is KMart.

Can they make a come back? Yes, but they need to either become the Big Lots of toys or go highly specialized. Also maybe take a lesson from the early days of Radio Shack (1962 era of Tandy Corporation).

To quote from Wikipedia:

Tandy closed Radio Shack's unprofitable mail-order business, ended credit purchases and eliminated many top management positions, keeping the salespeople, merchandisers and advertisers. The number of items carried was cut from 40,000 to 2,500, as Tandy sought to "identify the 20% that represents 80% of the sales" and replace Radio Shack's handful of large stores with many "little holes in the wall", large numbers of rented locations which were easier to close and re-open elsewhere if one location didn't work out. Private-label brands from lower-cost manufacturers displaced name brands to raise Radio Shack profit margins; non-electronic lines from go-carts to musical instruments were abandoned entirely.

randomerr··on MediaWiki running on .NET Core
I love it. I only have a minor gripe with PeachPie - When I edit an application it doesn't auto recompile. I liked you could edit the web.config file and force recompile.
randomerr··on Propel – Machine learning for Javascript
Is there a practical use case for this system? It looks great. I want to parse out textual data and this system seems to only work on numbers sets.
randomerr··on KaiOS – A Smartphone Operating System
I think it was combination of factors that shut down FireFox OS:

* The foundation was bleeding money and had to limit it's focus

* The Matchstick on KickStarter made FireFox OS look like a non-viable product

* Not a lot of chimerical interest outside from outside the community

randomerr··on Chinese Bitcoin mining company may have made as much money as Nvidia last year
This kind of inflation is one of the reasons I stay away BitCoin.
randomerr··on Ask HN: Back-end or front-end for non-programmers?
I say put out the $30 and try a structured course like the one below. Once you finish that course you should know enough to start focusing on where you want to go with your development. Otherwise I would just search on YouTube.

randomerr··on Powershell Obfuscator
Why? Isn't the whole reason you use a scripting language is that so it easily be used and edited? If you're going to this length, why not just write and obfuscate it in .NET? You'll gain a bunch features and possible speed advantages
randomerr··on Two-Way Communication Is Possible with a Single Quantum Particle
Single wire communication does the same thing. The best example is the telegraph. You have a start, body and end protocol for your message on both ends. The quantum particle replaces the wire. Setting up the protocol and consistently pulsing that particle is the hard part.
randomerr··on Ask HN: Can a co-founder work remotely?
I thinks its unfair to expect one partner to do a larger part of the day to day activity that would normally spread between the both of you.

IMHO: You may need to step down as a partner or reduce your salary. That way your partner can use the extra funds to hire an office manager to take on the role that you cannot fulfill being remote. Otherwise you will need to physically move with business.

I've seen businesses fail because of burn out quickly. One partner doesn't feel that other isn't picking up the slack. The partner that feels neglected either stopping doing what they are doing to push the other person take responsibility. Or they just walk away, cut their loses, and call it a life lesson for everyone.

randomerr··on Are voting-machine modems truly divorced from the Internet?
Landline modems are by far the most secure. But even those modems call out to fiber optic cables that run on the same switches as the internet and cellular networks. ISDN modems a communication protocol that uses something like block chain technology is the best we can offer. ISDN give use speed (less chance to get intercepted) and data validation that audio modems just don't.

Those option aside, physically shipping the units in armored trucks with tamper tapes installed and physical tapes as a backup is the best option.

randomerr··on Ask HN: Is anyone using BTC or cryptocurrencies for transactions
No. It not economical to get the currency. It costs too much hardware and electricity to earn it. And the inflation from my nations's currency doesn't out weigh the advantages to just exchange it.

Plus there nothing physically backing up the cryptocurrency. Which means as soon as the public looses confidence it nothing more then. Also what happens if the internet goes down? There no way to access your wallet.

randomerr··on Building a backup bee: A novel replacement for the embattled honeybee
With the Indinian Leg Chewers DNA starting to spread to wild population we're seeing an increase in the over population (wild and professional hive). That's saying a lot in Ohio since most states that border us don't have mandatory inspections. We have to deal with a bad invasion from Varroa mites coming from Michigan due to their lax laws.

randomerr··on QuickBASIC Lives on with QB64
I've used the QB64 for a few projects that extended old stuff I had done. But I've had some stability issues with the interface and applications. That was a few sub-versions so that may have been fixed.

I've had really good luck with FreeBasic. It supports classic QBasic as well as a lot more new commands, libraies, and is more modernized. You can also compile Windows, DOS, and Linux binaries. The drawback is that it doesn't have it's own GUI and is a bit harder to set up.

randomerr··on Snap loses $1.3B as reality TVstar Kylie Jenner says she no longer uses Snapchat
"At close of trading yesterday, Snap’s share price had dropped by more than 6%, and was at one point $1.5B down on the day’s opening price."

I'll bet they recover most of that today. I think its the new interface that really killed their stock. Kylie was just the final tipping point.

Besides stock prices don't really do much for a company's day to day activity. Its just a mark of confidence. Most stock trades are based on emotions. So Snap needs to gets back in the good graces of the people it serves.

randomerr··on Managing a Medical Record on the Blockchain
The concept is sounds from a technical level. But having dealt with the industry Compliance is going to have a fit. After all you have bits of a patients data flying around a network that not easily trackable. Also in Step 3 - If the off network system is requesting the data from secure URL why block chain it all?
randomerr··on Are Fantasy Sports Really Gambling?
You put money down in hopes of cash. Yes, yes it is.

randomerr··on Japan's VR Girlfriend Is Coming to Creep Us Out in the Real World
This should never surprise anyone. Japan's current generation of 20 something men are so focus on work and gaming that they don't want to deal with complex relations. Whats better then a girlfriend you can launch into the real world and the stow her away when you're done. Its like the adult version of Pixel Pinkie.
randomerr··on Retiring Wave
Wave was a layer that live on top of a modified Jabber/XMPP chat server. It sent extra meta data to your messaging client. Depending on your client and meta data sent your client could download JavaScipt applets you authorized. The applet would render the meta data into something like an iFrame to show a Google Document or a PacMan game. Also you could create a separate messaging thread from a single comment but still have a link to parent thread (ala #Slack now.)

The branching comments, embedded documents, and ability to create mini applets were the big selling points. But the feature were never well explained and internal implementation was a nightmare. As people could still hook in Jabber with client it was also creating issues with spamming and hacking.

randomerr··on Sorry, Collectors, Nobody Wants Your Beanie Babies Anymore
All things come back. So in another 10-15 years they'll be valuable again. But not those God awful evil look dolls they make now.
randomerr··on Your office is beginning to look like a forest
I remembers of an article I read last year in Business Inside. It touched on the physical and mental health benefits of at least taking a break in nature and unplugging in your regular life. From the closing summary in my article:

Why the connection? Researchers point to "recovery from stress and attention fatigue, encouragement of physical activity, facilitation of social contact and better air quality" as well as nature's positive effect on mental health, which would boost overall health and longevity as well.

randomerr··on Modern C++ isn't memory safe, either
I never thought C/C++ was memory safe because you can still do inline assembly.

randomerr··on $1,499 floating tent that lets you wake up on the water continues to sell out
Maybe I'm over thinking this but wouldn't a pontoon raft be safer and last longer?Withe price of palettes and plastic barrel you make one for about $500 and then just put a cheap tent on. To each their own tent for $100.
randomerr··on Why You Should Ignore Every Founder’s Story About How They Started Their Company
Best line: The lesson is that there will be mistakes and problems on any path to success.

My wife and found that out while trying to start our restaurant. If you're thinking of starting business I would get with a group like SCORE (https://www.score.org/) or contact a college to find an incubator.

randomerr··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
The Law of Unintended Consequences will:

* Put companies out of business that produce or import said goods

* Reducing availability and increasing cost of medical goods that use plastic because the aforementioned companies no longer exist or are importing products

* Put pressure on manufactures to use alternate materials (bamboo and glass most likely) causing shortages and rising cost

This in the long run is going to put an overall strain on on the country that is going to drive commerce away and make a black market. Just look at place that bans or places a sin taxes on certain products.

Soda Tax in New York that made people go to New Jersey:
