ratg13··on Yandex outage: data shows that instead of going dark, malicious bots moved
I don't understand why they are just starting with the assumption that all of the bot traffic would just go straight out to the internet from their ASNs

If it were a professional operation, the first thing you would do would be to not give away the source of where the traffic is coming from and route the traffic through an intermediary.

ratg13··on Denmark data breach exposes 8.8M people's personal data
This is just a general American complaint that has merit on its own, but has nothing to do with the article and is just derailing any discussion about the article itself and driving the conversation to your own personal concerns about something completely separate.

In this case, the EU does have consequences for data breaches where proper protocols are not followed.

Additionally, this is not private information .. most anyone can look this information up. ID numbers are not confidential information like SSNs are treated in the US.. they are just a number to tell person A from person B. You give this number to everyone without thinking about it because it's how every company you interact with identifies you.

In this case a rogue company, or compromised company, used their access to contact the central database to download everyone's information.

In my country we essentially use the same system, except for we still allow companies to download the whole database if they want to instead of making individual queries.

In this case the access to their system was unauthorized, and under GDPR data breaches have to be reported within 72 hours. Companies can't make the decision on their own that it's not a big deal.

ratg13··on curl can be used to send emails with SMTP
Interesting and good to be aware of

When on a random CLI though my personal preference though is still to use telnet as the commands are easily memorized and there’s something more natural about typing the email out and then sending it.

ratg13··on GPT-5.6 used a prompt to close a 30-year gap in convex optimization
AI / LLMs are not intelligence .. they are just a prediction engine that has been branded as 'intelligence' by marketing employees

At the end of the day it is still making a best guess at what the user wants based on data it has seen before.

It still requires someone smarter than the output to be able to evaluate if the result is any good, or just hand waving.

ratg13··on Ask HN: Due to spam on GitHub, what platforms can I move my projects?
Set up a GitHub action to auto-close any pull requests from anyone not on an approved list.

Leave a message in the pull request that if they want to argue their case for a pull request they can send a message through a communication channel of your choice, and say that anyone sending a message with AI generated text, even to help with language and grammar will be banned.

ratg13··on How turkey hacked the hair-transplant industry
You can't donate hair follicles .. it has to come from your own body
ratg13··on Samsung Overtakes Apple for Top Smartphone Customer Satisfaction
I stopped using samsung because of the uninstallable facebook apps.

I don't get why if i'm paying multiple thousands of dollars for a phone that they still bundle what I consider spyware and give the user no option to uninstall it.

On my last Samsung I went into the settings and disabled all of the apps that I couldn't uninstall .. and when I checked the settings like 6-8 months later, those apps were still disabled, but in the meantime they had installed a few more facebook authored background apps without my permission.

I will not be going back until they stop this.

ratg13··on I am building a cloud
As long as you never have to interact with them. If you run into issues they have caused themselves, you'll find yourself dealing with a unique mix of arrogance and incompetence.
ratg13··on Apple fixes bug that cops used to extract deleted chat messages from iPhones
I think people are too focused on the device part of it.

Whatever Apple did to block access to the cache does not negate the fact that these notification messages are still being sent in plaintext through Apple and Google’s servers.

It’s hard to imagine that Apple/Google couldn’t just be compelled to hand this information over if ordered by a court and wouldn’t need your phone at all.

And this loophole possibly only hinges on the fact that most law enforcement maybe never realized this was something they could ask for.

Or perhaps this is happening and the public just doesn’t know it yet.

ratg13··on Claude Code Removed from $20-a-Month "Pro" Subscription for New Users
This doesn’t affect existing users.

This is a simple supply and demand curve.

Higher demand means the price goes up .. this has been true of things since before SaaS and before computers

ratg13··on NSA is using Anthropic's Mythos despite blacklist
Could also be non-native speakers .. Even as a former grammar nazi, now that English isn't my daily driver language I find myself making basic mistakes .. (two, too, to / its, it's / etc.)
ratg13··on Archive of BYTE magazine, starting with issue #1 in 1975
I was always more partial to Compute magazine
ratg13··on Tell HN: Fiverr left customer files public and searchable
If this gets swept under the rug, it doesn't seem like they are going to do anything about it, and it will mean that only the bad people are going to be able to find this stuff.. who knows for how long.
ratg13··on Artemis II moon mission unifies politically divided Americans in wonder
Trump support is currently at 37% and only 69% of people think this is valuable.

A 6% overlap is hardly unifying.

The few Trump supporters I know think the whole thing is fake.

ratg13··on Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? My quest to unmask Bitcoin's creator
E-Gold fulfilled all of these ideas and existed long before bitcoin and this article.
ratg13··on FBI Extracted Deleted Signal Messages Saved in iPhone Notification Database
Notifications are not part of an app, it is a service provided by Apple/Google

Most notifications are sent by backend servers straight to Apple/Google

ratg13··on AMD AI director says Claude Code is becoming dumber and lazier since update

ratg13··on US and Iran agree to provisional ceasefire
It should be noted that they are not just bombing, but using airburst white phosphorus munitions over civilian areas attempting to scorch the earth and give people a lifetime of health problems.
ratg13··on Veracrypt project update
No new features, no security patches.
ratg13··on Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
I hate Amazon more because than most people, but let’s be realistic.

These devices came out in 2007-2012

14-19 years is a respectable lifetime for a handheld electronic device.

ratg13··on Brain scans reveal how to enters a psychedelic-like trance without drugs
If you are interested in learning more, check out the David Lynch foundation

(Yes, that David Lynch)

There is also tm.org which is a worldwide organization offering courses in most countries.

ratg13··on StackOverflow: Retiring the Beta Site
At some point they got ultra aggressive about "duplicate" questions.

Technology changes at a fast pace .. so new questions would get asked, and then closed by moderators and pointed to similar questions that might be 5 or 6 years old and no longer relevant.. essentially ending the discussion on many topics and actively preventing progress in certain areas.

ratg13··on Elon Musk insists banks working on SpaceX IPO must buy Grok subscriptions
The xAI merger is the core of the rugpull

SpaceX made 8 billion in profit last year and xAI is losing 1B per month.

The whole IPO is convincing people that datacenters in space that are orders of magnitude more expensive than ones on earth is a financially viable business model and that tens of millions of people that already have internet are going to give up fiber for starlink.

It’s FSD and robotaxis x100

ratg13··on Apple announces new Mac sales record following MacBook Neo launch
They have made something that can more easily be adopted by schools for students.

They are creating countless customers for life.

ratg13··on Ask HN: How are mobile apps able to track users without permission?
App setting

Yes I understand that GPS still works in airplane mode, but the app should not have my location made available to it when I am not using it

ratg13··on A data center opened next door. Then came the high-pitched whine
Gas turbines emit an array of pollutants including nitrogen oxides, methane, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and formaldehyde that you should not be breathing.

You might not feel it right away, but the closer you are to these things, the more your health is going to suffer over time.

ratg13··on Show HN: Hacker News archive (47M+ items, 11.6GB) as Parquet, updated every 5m
Create a new account every so often, don’t leave any identifying information, occasionally switch up the way you spell words (British/US English), and alternate using different slang words and shorthand.
ratg13··on Polymarket gamblers threaten to kill me over Iran missile story
One has to wonder if the people placing these bets didn’t have some plans of their own.

A million dollars for a single bet is extremely high stakes.

ratg13··on Ask HN: How do you find collaborators?
I find discord is very helpful for this.

Find servers that are used by people in your desired audience and there is usually an appropriate channel to post in.

Let people know what you are doing and what you are looking for and interested parties will message you.

ratg13··on Enhancing gut-brain communication reversed cognitive decline in aging mice
You either need a lab to test donor samples first, or when this was more of a craze, a popular source of 'donations' for the DIY crowd was young children.

If you're interested in digging into the people that were doing this, they had a website dedicated to everyone telling their stories of how they went about their own individual journeys.

The website was called thepowerofpoop.com and looks like it's gone now, but is available on the wayback machine including individual articles and images.

I would go back to at least 2022 .. I think they possibly got in legal trouble at some point and started taking things down.
