ratherlongname··on Programming is Art
It won't stop people from enjoying playing Go, though
ratherlongname··on Our Man in Ajmer
I don't know when and how I'll ever stop being salty about the colonial powers that absolutely looted my country.
ratherlongname··on Beej's Guide to C Programming
Your guide to network programming got me through a difficult course in my Bachelors! Thank You!
ratherlongname··on Don’t teach during code reviews
I agree with the everything the author says in this article. But their advice includes teaching during code reviews, so the title is misleading. Explaining the 'why' of a code review comment is teaching, nothing wrong with that IMO.
ratherlongname··on Select ’Hello, World’: Serverless Postgres Built for the Cloud
How does this compare to a traditional Postgres deployment in terms of performance? Time-to-response for queries, latency and so on.
ratherlongname··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
https://shivambl.com

It's just few HTML pages. It has my resume and my contact information.

ratherlongname··on What Le Corbusier got wrong and right in his design of Chandigarh
For me there's a cross to close the donation dialog box (top-right).
ratherlongname··on Show HN: Cloning a musical instrument from 16 seconds of audio
How did you create the image (in 'How does this work')? Looks super clean.
ratherlongname··on Show HN: Randomize HTML content to test your defensive CSS
Love cleartax, maybe I'm a bit biased because it was founded by one of my alumnus (from IITG).

Always love seeing projects that indicate focus on code quality and better practices, esp. from Indian companies.

It shows that despite the general culture of doing more in less, frugality, etc; still someone was able to focus on doing something right and making it open source too!

ratherlongname··on European Payments Initiative (EPI)
Yeah, UPI is an absolute godsend. EPI looks heavily inspired by UPI. Somewhere I read even USA is looking into a similar system.
ratherlongname··on How you play Spades is how you play life
What score do people typically play to? I don't know. I can't read the font. Sigh guess I'll never know.
ratherlongname··on Show HN: I made a community sourced fitness routine database
Any update on the routine? Also please share a link to your blog :)
ratherlongname··on Caught in the Study Web
There's lots of communities on the internet. People who do DIY home improvements, gamers, programmers and countless more. Similarly there are people who want to study or be productive. Of course their network spans across platforms, just like any other passion people may have. Giving this phenomena a specific name - "Study Web" makes it seem like it's something well established or institutionalized. Which is just not true. The subtitle of the article "Exploring Gen Z’s Ambitious and Anxiety-Fuelled Pursuit of Straight A’s Across YouTube, TikTok, Discord, and Twitter" does a much better job of describing the article for what it is. What's next? DIY Web, Music Web, Cat Pictures Web.
ratherlongname··on Ask HN: What project should I build for my resume as a new grad?
This is something I was wondering as well. I am targeting FAANG and similar companies, what projects would be suitable for such orgs?
ratherlongname··on Ask HN: What project should I build for my resume as a new grad?
Thanks. I was leaning towards making something I've had in my mind since some time now. Maybe I just needed some confirmation.

Why do you wish you'd taken the FAANG path?

ratherlongname··on UPI: India's Unified Payments Interface
No such issue with UPI. 2FA makes sure no one can do payments from your lost phone; and the signup process for UPI (on a new phone) literally only involves creating a PIN as the bank account associated with your current phone number is added automatically through SMS verification.
ratherlongname··on Poetry – Python dependency management and packaging
Care to elaborate for us muggles
ratherlongname··on Ask HN: Do you still use reddit.com?
of course I do
ratherlongname··on Ask HN: How to keep yourself accountable?
Sign your code.

Doing this attaches your reputation to your code. Anybody reading it knows to expect a certain level of quality given it is written by you, and you get the much needed motivation to write good code.

Amazing piece of advice I picked from the Pragmatic Programmer.

ratherlongname··on Ask HN: How to keep yourself accountable?
Sign your code.

Every piece of code you work on should be signed by you. Your reputation gets attached to your work, fear of what your impression will be on someone reading sloppy code written by you should be motivation enough to write good code.

This is just one of the many useful tips I learned from the Pragmatic Programmer.
