ratio11··on Firesky – The Bluesky Firehose
Would love to see the code behind this. Side note, I'll continue to ask, if anyone has an invite drop it here!
ratio11··on Ask HN: Non .com .tld for project website
As far as I know, yes. Namecheap markets it as being short for software, or social.
ratio11··on Ask HN: Non .com .tld for project website
Simple opinionated answer: .io and .so

A decade ago .io meant you were trendy and in tech, now it means you’re in tech.

Today .so means you’re trendy and in tech.

ratio11··on I am a REAL bad software developer and this is my life
This is both funny and sad. The author’s difficulties were almost certainly caused by their mental illness.

As an aside, as a Canadian it’s always amazing reading about American CS grads with no practical skills start at a salary higher than I will likely ever have. What a difference a few kilometres make.

ratio11··on Twitter restores suicide prevention feature after Reuters report
A family is visiting the grandmother before her medically assisted death due to extreme chronic pain. Should the children be explained to what’s going on before they say goodbye? If so, is a book made for children possibly a helpful way to approach this topic?

The “kids can’t learn about X” arguments never seem fully thought out to me, more like reactions to triggering words. Sex ed, gay people, euthanasia, etc.

ratio11··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
Absolutely. This is one last attempt to frame his failure and giving up as being his dedication to “vox populi”.
ratio11··on Ask HN: Are you scared about your job being taken or minimised by coding AI?

ratio11··on Ask HN: I want to crawl every plain HTML website. Where do I begin?
You might be interested in Common Crawl. They crawl the internet and make the full dataset downloadable.

ratio11··on Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022
I don’t understand why he presents this as a mystery. They both adhere to this App Store rule:

“If your app includes user-generated content from a web-based service, it may display incidental mature “NSFW” content, provided that the content is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website.“

ratio11··on Show HN: I made this webcomic with text-to-image AI
Details: The engine I'm using here is Midjourney. Because there's no ability for consistency of characters (plus general engine limitations), I've found it works great for backgrounds. Then, characters can be quickly doodled over top.
ratio11··on Ask HN: Developers who switched from native development to Flutter, how is it?
I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of people who switched from React Native to Flutter, or vice versa. Especially those who needed web support.
ratio11··on Scam apps still active on App Store – steal over $100M annually
This seems like a legacy of the way the app store used to work. Today if you delete an app with an active subscription you are prompted to unsubscribe.
ratio11··on Tell HN: Apple rejecting cross platform apps (React Native, Flutter, Capacitor)
Correct. Their automated system is rejecting the builds. It seems to think they're using private APIs. This problem seems to be affecting users of all the major cross platform solutions, but it might not be exclusive to them.

Edit: This tweet is theorizing that it's an issue with WkWebView https://twitter.com/ThomasVidas/status/1533936319596007425

ratio11··on iOS 16 to support Web push notifications in 2023
A big remaining hurdle to developing native-like PWAs on iOS is the inability to lock the screen orientation.
