rationalist··on Ballot Rejections Have Soared in Rural Counties as USPS Reduces Mail Service
You can physically remove your mailbox, but then you won't get other mail you might want.
rationalist··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
FYI, OP is wrong about "pulling the wireless module and voiding your warranty."

In the U.S., merely doing something like that will not void your warranty due to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Companies will lie and claim that, but in my experience, they immediately backpedal when you ask for that in writing (or if it was already in writing, thanking them for admitting to breaking the law).

rationalist··on CatGPT – The Platform for Your Cat
I was hoping this was a program to try to translate cat meows.

I tried the URL and got this:

  The domain name

  is for sale!

Yep, that solves the problem for 95+% of the population that barely knows how to use a screwdriver. /s

Where are you buying them? I can't find them and other users seem to reporting the same. I'm thinking they are silently discontinued.

Better hope that no guest connects the TV to their phone hotspot to watch their Netflix like one user in a previous post reported happened to them.

Do they sell them in stores, because they seem to always be sold out on the website every time I check?

Good point, thank you.
rationalist··on Getting debug access on a Brother printer over Telnet
It took me a bit to understand what I think you meant:

Even when the cartridge is physically 3/4 full, the software will claim it is empty and not print.

Yeah, that sucks too.

Yep, Thank you
rationalist··on Proton goes all in on using AI
> demand for software is more or less infinite so if coding agents make everyone a 10x engineer eventually we will easily find use for 10x more software.

That will probably be true.

rationalist··on Proton goes all in on using AI
Commonly attributed to Upton Sinclair:

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.”

Just like other advances in technology have replaced jobs, AI will replace jobs.

I'm sure the elevator opperators lamented push-button controls that anyone could just press too.

It sucks, but I imagine most programmers are smart enough to be able to pivot careers or how they do their jobs.

Your method does not protect against what the person you replied to, posted.

If your paper wallet, generated offline, used a bad RNG, it is just as vulnerable.

rationalist··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Wasn't there an offline wallet that used a poor algorithm to develop seed phrases, and thus someone stole all of those coins a couple of months ago?
rationalist··on Getting debug access on a Brother printer over Telnet
Idk if they still do this, but a long time ago I had a Brother inkjet that wouldn't print black and white if one of the color cartridges was empty (cyan iirc).
rationalist··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
That's also a possible factor in why those sitting in the rear half of the plane during a crash are more likely to survive - they have the front of the plane as the crumple zone.

Although for trains, it looks like the middle might be the safest (in case of a rear-end collision).

rationalist··on Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain
Did capitialism cause this train crash? I suppose it is too early to say what exactly happened.
rationalist··on Somebody please stop the spam texts

rationalist··on One of the Greatest Inventions in the History of Human Transport
Just imagine how much we will see change in our lifetimes.

For some of us; that's dial-up, to AI, to who knows what.
