ravedave5··on Wind and solar generated more power than gas globally in April 2026
I have a similar project, I'm so overpaneled I bought an electric heater so I could actually see how many watts I brought in during a nice summer day. The victron UIs have an excellent graph history.
ravedave5··on Any application that can be written in a system language, eventually will be
It might. An electron app is always a compromise, everyone knows several native apps would be better, but that's 3x the effort and maintenance. If you have LLMs porting to other systems they may be kinda janky, but is that worse than an electron app?
ravedave5··on Gaussian Splatting – A$AP Rocky "Helicopter" music video
This is a REALLY good video explaining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eekCQQYwlgA
ravedave5··on The Napoleon Technique: Postponing things to increase productivity
I left this open for 4 days before reading it, does that count?
ravedave5··on Oral microbiome sequencing after taking probiotics
A surprising amount of variation from day to day even.
ravedave5··on A new chapter begins for EV batteries with the expiry of key LFP patents
Add Affordable at the start of that sentence and it's accurate.
ravedave5··on The government has no plan for America’s 300 billion pennies
First they are coated in copper, and second nobody bakes pie crusts at a temp that would cause zinc to offgas and third zinc fever is not a big deal unless you're breathing a bunch every day.
ravedave5··on Mixing Is the Heartbeat of Deep Lakes. At Crater Lake, It's Slowing Down
There weren't even fish in the lake until 1888, it's likely this has occurred more than once in the past.
ravedave5··on 3D solar tower increases capacity factor 50%, triples solar surface area
I stopped reading as soon as I got to the word "tracking". Solar panels are so cheap it's always better to overpanel than add tracking. Then I re-read a bit and this is about adding solar panels in space constrained areas. Why would you do that? I guess maybe if some company needs to virtue signal rather than actually use the power and has a small lawn. Solar is amazing, but don't try and jam it into places it doesn't make sense.
ravedave5··on We saved $500k per year by rolling our own "S3"
I've dealt with images in a database and it was a disaster, the transfer times are garbage.
ravedave5··on Wasp Blower
I just vacuumed up a bee hive that had taken residence in my siding. Just rigged up my shop vac at the entrance and left it on.
ravedave5··on Solar energy is now the cheapest source of power, study
Depends on the state/city. In Minnesota with cheap electricity and not a ton of sun it's still worth it, just takes a while to recoup. In places in california you can recoup costs in as little as 2 years sometimes because the rates are so high.
ravedave5··on A case study in bad hiring practice and how to fix it
I had a buddy go through the Canonical process, it's totally insane. They expect you to jump when they say, but then they may not respond for days or weeks.
ravedave5··on GitHub Copilot Coding Agent
I was trying to find information on this on the internet and couldn't find any, thanks for providing. Interestingly enough Copilot coding agent on github.com repeatedly could not complete css changes correctly, when I switched to Agent mode in the project IDE with Claude 3.7 it was able to complete it in one round, so I assumed that there was a different model.
ravedave5··on 4o Image Generation
Everyone should try running their prompts and see how over hyped this is. The results I get are terrible comparatively.
ravedave5··on Leaked VA memo calls for up to 83,000 layoffs to reduce workforce to 2019 levels
Neither side cares we are in debt, see the spending plan put forth.
ravedave5··on Bald eagles are thriving again after near extinction
Soon TV shows and movies won't be able to use the red tail hawk noise for bald eagles because everyone will actually know what they sound like.
ravedave5··on OpenAI Computer-Using Agent
Depends on the pricing & speed. I think you'd use this to create scripts that would run frequently, then on failure you'd have this evaluate if there were changes and if so create a new script.
ravedave5··on Ask HN: SWEs how do you future-proof your career in light of LLMs?
So what I've seen so far is that LLMs are amazing for small self contained problems. Anything spanning a whole project they aren't quite up to the task yet. I think we're going to need a lot more processing power to get to that point. So our job will change, but I have a feeling it will be slow and steady.
ravedave5··on AI Does NYT Connections
Argh put a spoiler cover over today's at least!
ravedave5··on YouTube in Android introduces UI bugs
This is why I have auto update turned off. It sucks but it's the only way to ensure that you continue to have a good experience with apps. I had an issue for several months while watching youtube fullscreen I'd do some gesture/interaction and suddenly it would be locked whole screen and I couldn't exit, switch apps or do anything. Only a reboot would solve it. No other apps had this issue. I finally tried an update and it's far less frequent. There is no way in heck am I upgrading again until absolutely forced.
ravedave5··on DuckDuckGo AI Chat
There's definitely value in providing that anonymizing layer. People pay plenty for VPNs.
ravedave5··on Why Companies Are Ditching the Cloud: The Rise of Cloud Repatriation
> it’s so much faster to click a few buttons than to go through the hardware acquisition processes at many enterprises.

My companies on prem requisition process used to be so horrifically bad that it forced ball of mud solutions because nobody had time to wait 9 months for new servers. Also we had scaling issues and we couldn't react in any timely manner. I feel like its a penny wise pound foolish approach to stay on prem.

ravedave5··on Floral formula
This made me laugh then ponder. That's exactly it.
ravedave5··on SpaceX update regarding Starship FAA flight approval
I bet Elon tweeting AI generated videos of the VPOTUS in soviet garb helped a ton here.
ravedave5··on Minifying HTML for GPT-4o: Remove all the HTML tags
ChatGPT is clearly trained on wikipedia, is there any concern about its knowledge from there polluting the responses? Seems like it would be better to try against data it didn't potentially already know.
ravedave5··on How we migrated onto K8s in less than 12 months
Completely left out of this post and most of the conversation is that being on K8 makes it much, much easier to go multi-cloud. K8 is k8.
ravedave5··on Show HN: I built an open-source tool to make on-call suck less
The goal for oncall should be to NEVER get called. If someone gets called when they are oncall their #1 task the next day is to make sure that call never happens again. That means either fixing a false alarm or tracking down the root cause of the call. Eventually you get to a state where being called is by far the exception instead of the norm.
ravedave5··on Why Discover is no American Express
Amex's reputation for backing the customer, means you don't even always need to go to them for help. My wife was dealing with a travel agent not wanting to issue a refund (when the listing specifically gave the refund window, and we were inside it). She was at her wits end and finally said, "ok I'll call Amex, the listing is clear and they'll do a chargeback", that caused them to get a manager on the line and our refund was processed immediately.
ravedave5··on Roll-to-roll fabricated perovskite solar cells under ambient room conditions
It seems like the size & cost of the panel has stayed the same and the power output has gone up.
