rdtsc··on Gemini 4 Carbon
You want an executive to issue a press release about how dysfunctional and bureaucratic their company is and that’s why it’s so hard for users to actually use these new models?
rdtsc··on Gemini 4 Carbon
This model is not for you or me. This model is for Google AI engineers to put on their perf review at the end of the year. How you find or not find it, it doesn't matter. It goes into the "designed and developed Gemini 4 Carbon Ultra Pro" paragraph and people get a promotion, get to keep their jobs and hope to not get replaced by Gemini 4 Carbon next year.
rdtsc··on New iMac with M6
> Have you ever tried dragging that monitor and all those cables and peripherals into a Starbucks and camping there for 7 hours? This is a freelancer’s dream machine

For sure and you get a nice workout hauling a full desktop computer around to coffee shops. A fun conversation starter too, I bet!

If you bring in a color printer and photo scanner, you can really get some work done. Just need to grab another table to fit it all. I am sure nobody would mind.

rdtsc··on Why Micron Is Suddenly Ditching 4F² DRAM as Rivals Double Down
A little hard to explain it to the shareholders. Yeah that expensive investment research project? A total fake out to mislead our competitors. We actually bought snacks and drinks for everyone with that money!
rdtsc··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
> This isn't to say that installing solar panels on your house is a bad idea - they normally pay for themselves after something like 10 years from memory

I am with you, this would be better on a town or regional basis instead of on everyone’s roof. Our houses already have wires going to them and I can’t imagine my particular roof or garage is the best place to put panels and batteries. But I understand it’s a political / administrative issue which may well be not solvable easily in many places.

rdtsc··on 'It's offensively cheap': Solar power is quietly becoming bigger than nuclear
Unless there are enough marks for everyone to scam. Then the focus is to extract the money instead of investing in crushing the competition.
rdtsc··on Root shell on Samsung TV
That's a pretty good point. We kept hearing these rumors for a while now and all the usual suspects keep saying "we don't listen to your microphone on your phone" but yeah nobody expects the TV and fridge to do it, so maybe that's how it happens and people are not crazy.
rdtsc··on Lego collaboration with Daft Punk
> Daft Punk is two artists.

Were two artists. That’s what makes this weird. It’s DaftAI(tm) or other such junk more likely.

rdtsc··on Disney Raising Prices Days After Confirming Ads Will Now Show Up on Every Tier
TV sort of means different things to different people. To some it means cable, so giving up TV means switching to subscription channels. To others giving up TV means dropping subscription channels (Prime, HBO etc) but maybe watching youtube videos on the TV. But then would watching the same youtube videos on your phone count as watching "TV"? It sucks just as much time and attention, and it's even worse because now it is always in your pocket. I, for example, watch Amazon prime videos on my laptop while I do other stuff and I still feel like I am watching "TV" even though it's not on the actual TV
rdtsc··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business

Paste from mastodon:

rdtsc··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
We deeply and sincerely apologize for getting caught and not being able to cover it up.
rdtsc··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
This becomes an inverse Russian roulette: only one of six chambers is not loaded.

Waiting for a release like "... the level of social media amplification around this incident has brought scrutiny that is out of proportion to OTP 1FA place in our business. In view of this, after detailed deliberations our board has concluded that withdrawing from global OTP 1FA is the right decision for eMudhra and its shareholders"

rdtsc··on Quad9 to exit France
It shows maliciousness (we can bully this smaller player for a win) and/or total incompetence (we don't even understand how internet works, but we'll issue rulings anyway).
rdtsc··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
> However, the level of social media amplification around this incident has brought scrutiny that is out of proportion to SSL/TLS’s place in our business

Scrutiny is inversely proportional to bit complexity of the private keys they used. Without a failure to apologize or expose how it happened: a human mistake, process mistake, etc. this looks pretty bad on them.

> eMudhra’s global SSL/TLS infrastructure runs separately from its other operations. The company’s Global digital signature certificate (DSC), eSign, and other signing services, including those in India, its enterprise PKI Solutions (emCA, CertiNext platforms), emSigner eSignature Suite, and its identity and authentication solutions (SecurePass, emAS) are not affected and continue to operate as normal

Anyone relying on them with anything related to security or trust is playing Russian roulette at this point.

rdtsc··on Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy an iconic waterfall listed on Redfin
> As the state struggles being ranked 47 in education

That's wild. I would have never guessed Oregon to be that low somehow. I could have seen some poor southern states maybe or West Virginia.

Wonder what data you found? I found https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/public-scho... and it's 40th with a downtrend. Not sure how reliable that is though.

rdtsc··on 'Der Viener Schlinger': The meat cannon that launched 20k hot dogs
I wouldn't overthink it. It's "parody German": a hot dog slinger but "Germanized", if you will, to be funny

> When he was a standup comic in Los Angeles, Omapod host Tony Bock used to do a bit about the name. “Just saying ‘Der Viener Schlinger’ on a comedy stage gets a laugh, whether you’re in Nebraska or not,” he told me. “There’s something quintessentially Nebraskan about mustering the courage to solve the problem we faced before the advent of this invention: the inability to ‘schling’ the wieners.”

rdtsc··on A 'Ludicrously Ugly' Bridge Is Exhibit a That Britain Has Lost Its Mojo
Maybe that is the mojo, spending 250M and making something ugly. It’s like a rich person buying a banana stuck to the wall as art for $1M. They are showing the world they can do it not that they think the banana is delicious or pretty.
rdtsc··on British Airways: Filming Crew W Meta Glasses Could Get Your Tickets Cancelled

can't tell if it's a joke or not, if not, i'd turn right back and walk away

rdtsc··on An Apology
Yes indeed. Not only that, Apple worked with Android to make it work there too. It makes it a lot easier on the thief so they don’t have buy/steal an iPhone, too.
rdtsc··on Container ship sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran steps up attacks
But speaking about this ship the GP post implied that US it's American's fault. I mean, it may be, we don't know who shot it.

> But when Iran does the same MAGAs suddenly remember that international law exists.

I looked again and the article doesn't quote any MAGAs. I doubt US will go and complain to UN about it? It will probably just shrug, let Singapore defends its ships and sailors.

rdtsc··on Amsterdam police confiscates server left-wing ISP A/I at American request
Ah, sorry for assuming, I figured it was safe guess based on my limited French. It was a wrong guess.
rdtsc··on [dead]
What is even more shocking is that some of the schools there are run by Christians, and it's the pro-zionist Christian organizations in US who are too happy to support Israel and IDF campaigns to go and destroy them systematically. Not just as a result of the recent war, but ever since they've been ideologically captured to somehow support the state of Israel. I had noticed this was ramping up since the early 2000s already.
rdtsc··on Container ship sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran steps up attacks
> Crying about the effects of your own actions

Interesting, you think it was the US Navy who shot at the container ship?

rdtsc··on Container ship sinks in Strait of Hormuz as Iran steps up attacks
"but whatabout" is cute but how does it relate to a Singapore container ship with 20 crew members being shot at? It's like you're expecting an attack on that ship to undo or counter-balance the attack on the school? I don't get it.
rdtsc··on Google is silently linking your phone number across all signed-in accounts
That's why I stay away from trying Gemini or doing anything much with Google until I still host my main gmail account there. One misstep and I'll find myself locked out. Because it's Google's job to spy on everyone, if I have other accounts there, those will also locked out too ("oh! you're trying to circumvent our ban? we noticed!" kind of a thing). Then the only recourse from what I understand is to make an HN post and hope it makes it to the front page and someone from Google who knows someone else at Google will help you.
rdtsc··on Amsterdam police confiscates server left-wing ISP A/I at American request
> Confisquates?

Confiscates / seized. Pretty sure a french speaking poster mistranslated. It's "confisquer" in french.

rdtsc··on Gemini 4 Argon
I am not touching it for that reason. One wrong step and the whole gmail account is locked without any recourse.
rdtsc··on A Visual Intro to Complex Numbers
Fun fact: Python natively supports complex numbers

    In [1]: 2+3j
    Out[1]: (2+3j)

    In [2]: x=2+3j

    In [3]: y=1-5j

    In [4]: x+y
    Out[4]: (3-2j)

    In [5]: x*7
    Out[5]: (14+21j)

    In [6]: x*y
    Out[6]: (17-7j)

    In [7]: x**2
    Out[7]: (-5+12j)
I've used them before for 2D graphics as a "hack".
