rdudek··on Show HN: Gemini 4 Argon plays StarCraft
Does anyone know if there was a project having LLMs play Cities Skylines and see how well it manages to design and build a city?
rdudek··on Germany transforms former coal mines into Europe's largest lake landscape
I hear there is a shortage of blades for the turbines.
rdudek··on Grammarly will send unhinged messages to all your users if you try to cancel
So does anybody actually have a good alternative to Grammarly?
rdudek··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
Makes you wonder if that could actually work
rdudek··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
The comparison difference of terms and conditions was hilarious and spot on. Well done GN!
rdudek··on Jellyfin 12.0
Is Plex/jellyfin even necessary for Infuse? I've been using Infuse for years now and it has direct access to my NAS to look for media content and just directly plays it. It's a such an amazing app and it plays everything I throw at it without any buffering or transcoding issues. The Pro version pretty much has all the necessary codecs, including all the dolby things for hdr/atmos. It just works so well.
rdudek··on O&O ShutUp10 – The antispy tool for Windows 10 and 11
I'm approaching a year now on CachyOS and it has been a wonderful experience. All the games that I play run just fine, maybe a few FPS drop compared to Windows, but it's not a big deal for me. I also don't play any competitive online games that require 3rd party anti-cheat spyware. Biggest positives, I got very comfortable with terminal and CLI work. My development work has definitely improved.
rdudek··on CEO fired developers to make room for AI. Developers create open source AI CEO
I've been slowly developing my hermes agent to do something similar but is very customized towards my needs. I should spin up another agent and give this one a shot and see what it's capable of. This is hilarious.
rdudek··on Federal Communications Commission scraps limit on broadcast TV ownership
Nexsar is taking over Tegna. Currently tied up in courts, but it's pretty much sinclair-like propaganda machine.
rdudek··on Claude Sonnet 5
Would love to read that blog post. I'm toying with running local AI model with Claude and GLM as well depending on a task. Pretty decent success but it could be better.
rdudek··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
We're in late-stage capitalism here. The pitchforks are already out and spreading across the globe. Unless the big companies get broken up, this nation will split into either a police state or socialist state.
rdudek··on US House rejects FISA Section 702 extension, warrantless surveillance expires
I have to admire the double-dipping business model of private companies getting paid by local governments to setup surveillance cameras and harvest data. Then the same goverment will pay to get warrantless access to that same data.
rdudek··on Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot
Do you have a brand of those laces? The original ones on my Brooks runnign shoes are usually pretty good, but overtime they start getting more loose.
rdudek··on US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
The tidbid they're not talking about are the fact that wages are down .5%

rdudek··on Windows 9x Subsystem for Linux
Wouldn't that be WINE?
rdudek··on The hottest college major [Computer Science] hit a wall. What happened?
This just reminds me of that old meme where a product manager says something like "Why am I paying you $200k/yr when I can just copy code from StackOverflow?" and the engineer responded "You pay me that because I make sure the code you copied is the right code". I have a feeling we're in a similar situation here for AI. Sure, anyone can create AI slop code, but to fully take advantage of it, you need someone that understands the whole chain of design and development to make it fully work and integrate with existing systems.

I think we're in for an era where many folks will be filtered out and those who know and understand code, will be in high-demand.

rdudek··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
What about all the age restriction stuff coming online here in the US in various states? Those are cool right?

This service is definitely a honeypot for tracking.

rdudek··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
Genuine question, what is stopping users from using AI to generate a fake face or ID to bypass this restriction?
rdudek··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
Wait, was this an oversight on his part about the biometric unlock? My MacBook biometric gets disabled after a bit and requires a password if the lid was closed for substantial amount of time.
rdudek··on Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica
I honestly think that Waymo's reaction was spot on. I drop off and pick up my kid from school every day. The parking lots can be a bit of a messy wild west. My biggest concern is the size of cars especially those huge SUV or pickup trucks that have big covers on the back. You can't see anything incoming unless you stick your head out.
rdudek··on OMSCS Open Courseware
You'll get there! Some of them you can take two at a time. I myself only need 3 more!
rdudek··on Framework Sponsors CachyOS
I got Battle.net working through Steam. The way I have it is I add the battle.net installer into steam, add proton compatibility, once you run it it installs, but next time you run it, it just opens the launcher unless it needs an update. Then you can install World of Warcraft and other games there and run.

So far so good running CachyOS and KDE Plasma.

rdudek··on Student perceptions of AI coding assistants in learning
Every school has students work off their Chromebooks here in Colorado, regardless of how rich community is. This started with the Covid lockdowns and is pretty much standard now.
rdudek··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
How does it compare to CachyOS? I'm not too familiar with how immutable OS actually works or what is the deal with flatpacks.

I have a system that I kind of want to have Linux forward with Windows on secondary m.2 drive to dual boot if I need something there. Following protonDB, I see all the games that I play work just fine and are either gold or platinum status.

Would you recommend Bazzite or Cachy? I main do gaming, development and web stuff. I tend to run multiple dockers, multiple different versions of python and other packages. How would immutible OS affect me here?

rdudek··on Implications of AI to schools
This stuff is getting more pervasive too. I'm working on my Master's degree right now and any code I submit, I make sure it has spelling mistakes and make it god awful because I don't want to get flagged by some 3rd party utility that checks if it was AI generated or copied from someone else.
rdudek··on Why CUDA translation wont unlock AMD
What is powering Gemini?
rdudek··on Europe is scaling back GDPR and relaxing AI laws
Is this related to the upcoming EU-Inc initiatives next year?
rdudek··on Nearly 90% of Windows Games Now Run on Linux
Was the demo through Steam or through Ubisoft Connect launcher?

I'm a huge Anno fan and I play Anno 1800 like all the time. I own that game on the Ubisoft platform. If Anno 117 runs flawlessly, I maybe will cancel the preorder on ubisoft and get it on Steam...

rdudek··on Nearly 90% of Windows Games Now Run on Linux
How are Ubisoft games running on Linux nowadays? I think that is the only thing holding me back honestly.
rdudek··on I bought the cheapest EV, a used Nissan Leaf
Last year, I got a found a great deal on a gently used Chevy Bolt EUV 2023 model with only about 8k miles on it for about $16k USD from Hertz. Granted, I had to fly out of state to pick it up, but it was a great experience all together. Learned quickly that this car is not a road tripping car as it took over an hour to charge to 80%.

However, it is an amazing commuter car. Being able to charge it at home is fantastic.

We already put 14k miles on it since we got it last year.
