realityking··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
That was never implemented in any devices and is now a vestigal limb of the HDMI spec.
realityking··on Siri is so bad at everything
To quote Apple

> Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. It is available when Charge Limit is set to 100 percent. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80 percent in certain situations.

Source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/108055

The idea is that having the battery sit at 100% charge for an extended period of time is bad for the battery. So the phone charges to 80% immediately and then to 100% a little while before it expects to be unplugged.

realityking··on I don't like passkeys
As long as you still have your passport, which you’d need for international travel anyway, you can get your boarding pass at the airport without any hassle.
realityking··on I don't like passkeys
If nearby (some country) any credit card or even my ID card will get me home. I can walk into a branch of my bank and - with some waiting and paper work - I should be able to get enough cash to get myself home.

Abroad I’d head to the nearest consulate of my home country. Might be difficult to get to if it’s in a far away city. Hard to prepare for abstractly.

realityking··on .name Termination
Your misunderstanding lies here:

> 3- one or some of the domain owners, for example for fraser.name, acted as a registry themselves managing authoritative DNS servers for NS records of .fraser.name domains, these third level DNS servers being pointed to by the name. NS records.

There was no domain owner for fraser.name. Verisgn acted as the registry for fraser.name and allowed a registrar to directly register bob.fraser.name.

Before 2004 these third-level domains were the only way to register .name domains. It was the intended structure. See Wilipedia for an explanation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.name#Structure

realityking··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
First of all that's a weaker signal to the manufacturer/seller to make changes as it'd only indirectly affect them.

It's also moot - in most (all?) European cities you only pay for waste but not recycling (paper, plastic, glas, aluminum, etc.). Those are free and paid for by exactly the kind of recycling fees we're discussing here.

realityking··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
> On the other hand I estimate that between 50% and 200% of the taxes collected like this are wasted and not applied to their ultimate goals. The average collected amount per submission is so small that you cannot pay the bureaucrats managing the complex submissions from these sums.

The point of this tax is not to raise revenue bit to disincentivize wate. Since the tax weight based, companies have an incentive to reduce packaging.

realityking··on How Europe is killing makers and micro-entrepreneurs
Countries with poor credit struggle to issue debt in their own currency. Being able to inflate your debts away is a privilege of the rich.

It only covers changes made by Igalia devs. For a more general changelog I’d recommend the LWN articles:

realityking··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
Trucks and buses are starting to be electrified as well. Some boating as well but that‘s a rounding error.
realityking··on SQLite Critical CVEs or LLM Slop?
IMHO that’s why binaries and libraries should be separate packages. Drives me buts with npm packages.
realityking··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
There’s a process to scan a QR code with your phone and your phone then authenticates with the passkey.
realityking··on Germany set to restrict its Freedom of Information Act
It hasn't even been formally approved by the cabinet. Right now it's just a political agreement between the coalition party. A law still has to be drafted that the cabinet can then submit to the Bundestag.
realityking··on Germany set to restrict its Freedom of Information Act
The slogan "Wer hat uns verraten? – Sozialdemokraten!" has a rather long history. Coined by communist during the 1918 November Revolution, it referenced the social democrats at least tentative support of the suppression of the communist revolution and the murder of Karl Liebknecht und Rosa Luxemburg.

During Weimar times it was popular with both right-wing and left-wing forces. The Nazis - who sent social democrats to the concentration camps - also used it in their propaganda.

As much as I disagree with many of the things today's social democrats say and do, it's worth remembering that this slogan was popularized and predominantly used by anti-democratic forces. It's not a particularly fair thing to throw around carelessly.

realityking··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
That’s not true. The case is still pending in the CJEU’s General Court.

realityking··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
EU commissioners are similar to minsters/secretaries in national governments. My chance of getting within earshot of German federal minister are only slightly better than those of an EU minister - especially those that are not also members of parliament.

But if I’m unhappy with EU policies I can talk to a member of the EU parliament (and yes I know two of the members from my city) or I can talk to a member of the Bundestag since national governments have a large role in the EU.

In the end, my voice is tiny. Which is expected, after all I’m just one of over 450 million people living here.

realityking··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
Depending on how long you worked in Germany and where you retire, you might still be eligible for German public health insurance.
realityking··on Why Switzerland has 25 gbit internet and America doesn't
Your post is unnecessarily pedantic. The point the article makes is that they have a dedicated line to the next router unlike cable (DOCSIS) or GPON fiber where already the bandwidth of the last mile is shared among subscribers.

It’s a lot easier for an ISP to add more uplink and router capacity over time than to rewire to dedicated fiber.

realityking··on Incident Report: Railway Blocked by Google Cloud (Resolved)
My experience with a large-ish ($5m/year) AWS account was quite different. They were happy to support us with cost optimizations, discounts, and one time credits for certain activities (co-innovation and archiving certain milestones in their partner program).

Their primary concern seemed to have been to keep as much of our workload inside AWS as possible and to win workload from 3rd party services we used (e.g. CDNs). The actual revenue appeared secondary.

You’re brushing too broad a stroke GDPR only affects personal information. There’s plenty of sensitive business information that is not covered by GDPR - for example per business customer revenue data - that is legal to put into an AI tool but your employer may not want you to.
realityking··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark

realityking··on New laws to make it easier to cancel subscriptions and get refunds
> Is it harder than implied to make that declaration?

It involves going in person to a court or to a notary public. Pretty high friction which, I believe, is largely intentional.

realityking··on The three pillars of JavaScript bloat
There’s been a lot of progress (Temporal, URL, TextDecoder, Base64 encoding, etc.) but there are still gaps.

Math.clamp is a big one (it’s a TC39 proposal). I’d also love to have the stats functions that Python has (geometric mean, median, etc.).

On the more ambitious end: CSV reading/writing and IPv4/IPv6 manipulation.

realityking··on Starlink militarization and its impact on global strategic stability (2023)
Most European countries (except France and the UK) are not interested in projecting power outside of a fairly narrow geographic area (mostly the European continent and adjacent seas).

These “military starlinks” will be much smaller systems than actual Starlink. The German one plans for 100 satellites.

realityking··on The engine of Germany's wealth is blocking its future
From the OECD report you cited:

> In Germany, the tax wedge for the average single worker decreased by 5 percentage points from 52.9% to 47.9% between 2000 and 2024. During the same period, the average tax wedge across the OECD decreased by 1.3 percentage points from 36.2% to 34.9%.

Sounds like Germany is getting better.
