realusername··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.3
Yes indeed that's what I meant.

I saw they managed to apply their no-llm policy on top of their upstream mesa driver but I'm not sure how long that will hold if the forks are getting too popular

realusername··on Asahi Linux Progress Linux 7.3
Asahi is against LLMs so they won't.

Not sure what will happen when people will directly contribute to the Linux kernel with LLM patches though for these devices, I guess they will have to live with it.

realusername··on Dutch 'idealist' bank ASN blocks non-Google Android, including GrapheneOS
That's the paradox going on here, by updating the OS to make it more secure, you lose access to the banking apps.
realusername··on Dutch 'idealist' bank ASN blocks non-Google Android, including GrapheneOS
If they banned all outdated roms why not but you can use all the banking apps on something not updated since 2019 if it's stamped by Google
realusername··on Anthropic's internal AI use, at retail prices, now exceeds its employee pay
I'm personally really not impressed by their software quality, at least we know from their experience that infinite tokens at the best model available still doesn't replace good engineering.
realusername··on China's First Frontier AI Export Controls: Mofcom Announcement No. 48
The US economy highly depends on the valuation of the tech giants whereas the Chinese economy doesn't.

Additionally, the financial and technological equilibrium which makes OpenAI or Anthropic possible is rather precarious so they are poking on it, hoping to make it fall.

realusername··on The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
I'm currently working at an enterprise SPA and it also doesn't work well.

I think unless you have a very low number of features or employees (and are sure from the start to keep it this way) I don't see it working.

In my 3 previous companies I had similar issues so I think it's widespread.

realusername··on The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
They also were unnecessary even before AI, the biggest advantage of React over HTMX-style apps was that you could recruit someone more easily but the SPA complexity wasn't worth it and it scaled terribly.

Now that you don't write the code, I don't see why I would pick React style libraries unless the codebase is already there.

realusername··on Anthropic blocks users for anything touching training larger models
What kind of work you do? I'm doing Linux kernel work in my free time, arguably one of the most complex coding task you can do, and the open source models are sufficient
realusername··on Cloudflare Turnstile solver library (no headless browser required)
This is a war yes but Cloudflare already lost it. Cloudflare bypass is the hello world of bots, they just keep hobbists out, at most.
realusername··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
I'd rather focus on the fact that neither coal or gas seems to go own.
realusername··on Anthropic S-1
I don't see a path forward for valuations like Anthropic, either the hardware requirements fall off a cliff (and why would people pay Anthropic so much if it runs on a cheap laptop?) or either they don't and they will never have the capabilities to serve all their customers (and why would they be valued so much then?).

It's a lose/lose situation here for Anthropic (and OpenAI) whatever happens.

realusername··on Show HN: ReVault – new secure archive format
Isn't that similar to a Veracrypt volume as a file?
realusername··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
https://getartcraft.com/apps/wordcraft

It's happening, although it's just the beginning

realusername··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
Pretty much the same thing inside tech, I love AI for my personal projects but the productivity return in my dayjob has been slightly negative so far.
realusername··on Apple Security Research Device
I've covered that in the second part of my comment, even if you deliberately exclude GrapheneOS (not sure why you would as it's used by high profile targets), Apple still isn't #1
realusername··on Show HN: Autonomous root for Tcl Android TV via CVE-2022-22706
If it really is still on "Android 11 / Linux 4.4" as per the document, there's probably tons of root exploits
realusername··on Apple Security Research Device
It isn't, the most secure phone is GrapheneOS.

And if you only take into account stock phones, stock Pixels are still above it as per exploit costs.

So they are basically 3rd or 4th place if you add some other Android flagships into the list.

realusername··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
> It's more that developers and FOSS enthusiasts are a vanishingly small fraction of their customer base.

Maybe it's because direct installs are too hard to do already? Fortnite tried to go to that route and failed, if Fortnite couldn't make it who can?

And let's be real, I'm not going to accept any talk of "security" from Google when I type "chatgpt" in the search bar of the play store and I have an app with a counterfeit logo coming up at the top spot.

realusername··on Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices
They absolutely aren't "fancier launchers", they changed absolutely everything, they have the iOS settings, a fake appstore.. have a look on youtube on fake iphones.
realusername··on Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices
IPhones copies didn't wait this project, some people already have a full iOS reskin of Android which is very close unless you really know what to look for.
realusername··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
The law has superiority over the EULA, they could probably get away with disabling online multiplayer with concerns of cheating but I don't see any legal basis on how they could take away purchased games. That would go against any consumer right laws.
realusername··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
I also don't think remotely bricking/banning the console is legal in the EU.
realusername··on Epic Games Inc v Apple Inc
The software is absolutely terrible, I absolutely don't want to pay for that, it's not worth any money. Xcode jank and its lacking documentation looks like we're still stuck in 2005.

If they want to charge for an SDK, they have to invest some money to make it feel that we're paying for something.

realusername··on Using Claude to reduce the attack surface of code
That's pretty much why gatekeeping security, as Anthropic and OpenAI want, isn't a thing and doesn't work.

All projects need security and writing code means taking security decisions, you can't untangle both.

realusername··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
I think they are about to revise their projections again, the population is continuing to decline much faster than estimated.
realusername··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
Sure, they don't like programmers, why not. Then who are the other users which could make use of iPads as powerful machine?

Gaming? It's complicated for them as well and I have the impression they also hate gamers.

Video editing? Maybe, but what does the latest CPU brings on the table for that compared to the other ones?

Office tools? The situation looks as miserable as programmers.

3D modeling? Maya3d/Blender/... aren't available and even if it would be, Apple would likely ban plugins, making it useless.

AI tools? Too locked down to work.

realusername··on MicroG: Free-libre re-implementation of Google's proprietary Android user space
They could also have it decoupled from the OS with an open-source version, these are two different subjects.

The real reason to me is that they want to avoid Android forks outside of their control.

realusername··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
> I think they do not believe that big corporations in the US or Europe would actually use chinese models in their business operations due to security, regulatory and/or business continuity concerns.

Well they are wrong, I'm at a large EU startup and they are currently considering Deepseek as their default model, Opus/Fable would still be available for complex tasks.

realusername··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
> Deepseek does not offer zero data retention.

I don't believe the ones which say they do. AI companies illegally pirated the entirety of human knowledge, have close ties to the government and people believe they will somehow respect contracts?

Some AI companies are just more honest than others up front.
