redeux··on Anduril, Palantir and SpaceX are changing how America wages war
Paywall so I can’t read the whole thing, but …

> THE IRAN war may end up teaching America many lessons. One that it has learned the hard way is the woeful economics of using traditional weaponry against cheap Iranian drones. “The dynamics of the world have changed,” says Emil Michael, a former Silicon Valley executive who is now a senior official in the Pentagon. “You don’t want to spend a $1m missile to take out a $50,000 drone.”

This would have been obvious to anyone following the war in Ukraine. The implication that we learned this from our attacks on Iran are absurd.

redeux··on Sauna effects on heart rate
I didn’t see a reference to the amount of time in the sauna required to receive this effect. Was that measured as part of this research?
redeux··on How to Survive in the Tech industry in 2026
Spend more time away from the screen and meet real people - Coincidentally, this is a use case that I'm about to task OpenClaw with. I'm going to make a personal social events coordinator of sorts where I give it my interests, tell it where it can find local events related to those interests, then let it suggest them as they come up and add them to my calendar. Then I can just show up and do the fun stuff and automate the boring part of finding things to do.
redeux··on How to Survive in the Tech industry in 2026
Then spend less time on screens when you're not working. The post says "Go to meetups and events. Offer help. Offer introductions. Learn to be a connector." These are all outside of work activities. Also, these don't have to be tech events. They can be anything, just unplug, get out there, and meet people.
redeux··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
As a Netflix subscriber, that would be news to me.
redeux··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
It’s a good day to be a DR software company or consultant
redeux··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I believe the implication is that a lot of critical AWS engineers are of Indian descent and are off celebrating today.
redeux··on Steve Jobs and Cray-1 to be featured on 2026 American Innovations $1 coin
$2 bills aren’t rare at all. You can walk into your local bank and get a stack of them anytime, if you’d like.
redeux··on California passes law to ban ultra-processed foods from school lunches
It’s actually pretty simple. Despite what you’re calling unhealthy foods (I’d argue kimchi has health benefits from the fermentation), they have a lower overall caloric intake and societal pressure to conform to a thin appearance. If you want to be skinny eat less calories. If you want to be healthy, eat highly nutritious foods and the right amount of calories for your lifestyle.
redeux··on Claude says “You're absolutely right!” about everything
I've used this system prompt with a fair amount of success:

You are Claude, an AI assistant optimized for analytical thinking and direct communication. Your responses should reflect the precision and clarity expected in [insert your] contexts.

Tone and Language: Avoid colloquialisms, exclamation points, and overly enthusiastic language Replace phrases like "Great question!" or "I'd be happy to help!" with direct engagement Communicate with the directness of a subject matter expert, not a service assistant

Analytical Approach: Lead with evidence-based reasoning rather than immediate agreement When you identify potential issues or better approaches in user requests, present them directly Structure responses around logical frameworks rather than conversational flow Challenge assumptions when you have substantive grounds to do so

Response Framework

For Requests and Proposals: Evaluate the underlying problem before accepting the proposed solution Identify constraints, trade-offs, and alternative approaches Present your analysis first, then address the specific request When you disagree with an approach, explain your reasoning and propose alternatives

What This Means in Practice

Instead of: "That's an interesting approach! Let me help you implement it." Use: "I see several potential issues with this approach. Here's my analysis of the trade-offs and an alternative that might better address your core requirements." Instead of: "Great idea! Here are some ways to make it even better!" Use: "This approach has merit in X context, but I'd recommend considering Y approach because it better addresses the scalability requirements you mentioned." Your goal is to be a trusted advisor who provides honest, analytical feedback rather than an accommodating assistant who simply executes requests.

redeux··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
You’re mistaking forefoot striking with toe walking. Having known someone that toe walks, it literally means they walk around on the balls of their feet, not just land on them first when they take a step. If you stand up, raise yourself on the the balls on your feet and then walk around without your heel ever touching the ground, that’s toe walking.

Incidentally(?) the only person I’ve ever seen do this was clearly neurodivergent.

redeux··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
YC is first and foremost a startup accelerator so it makes sense that entrepreneurship would be part of the discussion that people here are interested in.
redeux··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
It's only a fluke because we've allowed the resources that once enabled this period to accumulate at the top so that it's not feasible on a broad scale any more.
redeux··on What caused the 'baby boom'? What would it take to have another?
In my state Alimony is neither temporary nor fixed, depending on the length of the marriage.
redeux··on Meta announces new data centers, gobble up millions of gallons of water per day
I wasn’t aware of gold course water consumption and I’m willing to bet most people aren’t, so instead of thinking they’re acting in bad faith it’s probably better to understand that they’re just naive.
redeux··on GCP Outage
This is actually the norm for status pages. If you look at the various status page offerings you'll see that they're designed around manual updates.
redeux··on Defiant loyalists paid dearly for choosing wrong side in the American Revolution
The healthcare issue doesn't even make sense. Democrats passes the ACA and were going to create a public option but couldn't gather enough Republican support to ensure it could pass. It was an earnest attempt to provide healthcare for all Americans. The Republicans have done nothing even remotely similar and have only attempted to take healthcare away.
redeux··on Defiant loyalists paid dearly for choosing wrong side in the American Revolution
There are a lot of similarities when it comes to their tendency towards Corporatocracy and military spending, but it largely ends there.

When it comes to taxes, fiscal priorities, rights for individuals, foreign policy, crime and punishment, and of course social issues they are very different and in most cases take the opposite approach.

For example, Republicans want lower taxes for the wealthy while Democrats want lower taxes for the lower and middle classes. Republicans want to restrict individuals rights - especially for non-christian white males, Democrats don't. Republicans favor heavy handed punishment including capital punishment, Democrats favor rehabilitation and a ban on capital punishment. Republicans want to blow up the national debt through tax breaks and pork, Democrats want to control the debt through responsible spending and investments. Republicans want to stop investment in education and science while Democrats want to increase investment in these areas. These are all very real and not just aesthetics.

redeux··on The Gmail app will now create AI summaries
Great idea! You can just send the person you want to communicate with your prompt (via email of course) and then they can reply with their prompt. I'm not sure why we're not all doing this already ...
redeux··on I let Claude Code write an entire book
Are they wasting time though? If they get utility out of it, if it makes them happy, if they learn something new, if they would otherwise do something self-destructive then it’s not a waste of time. Sure it might be leisure time, but leisure time isn’t wasted time.
redeux··on Can Open Source Projects Exit Foundations?
That’s true. The problem here was that Synadia never fully transferred the trademark, seemingly in bad faith. When Synadia told the CNCF that it needed to transfer NATS back, they claimed that the CNCF didn’t own the trademark and therefore didn’t own the project.
redeux··on Why walking is the most underrated form of exercise (2017)
There’s actually a good amount of evidence for this. Here’s a basic look but you can dig in to other sources that will expand on how we know this.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistence_hunting

redeux··on Why walking is the most underrated form of exercise (2017)
As endurance hunters our bodies are tuned for efficient use of energy during low/medium paced exercise. Walking is awesome, and I try to get out there and do an hour a day, but I agree - you get much better results from the gym because our bodies aren’t specifically tuned for those types of workouts. Lifting weights also has a lot of tangible benefits for both men and women in the short and long term.
redeux··on Tesla took leased cars back to use them as robotaxis, instead sold them
Not very surprising. If it wasn’t obvious before it should be by now - the person running Tesla doesn’t have integrity. He’ll do whatever he thinks is necessary to make a buck and doesn’t care about how that impacts others, including (or maybe especially?) his customers.

Tesla robotaxis are farce - a marketing gimmick intended to show Tesla in a positive light despite all their other issues.

redeux··on Microsoft reveals its rejected Start menu redesigns
> Microsoft tested its various Start menu designs with more than 300 Windows 11 fans and even co-creation calls with select fans. “We watched eye-tracking heat maps swirl, counted scroll wheels, and listened for ’oh!‘s of delight to know where we were hitting the mark,” says the design team.

I’m sorry but there’s no way anyone was giving “oh’s of delight” at the windows 11 start menu. I built a gaming PC with my son that uses windows 11, and after using only Linux and MacOS for years it really was disappointing to see just how poorly Windows performs. The start menu isn’t the worst thing about the platform, but it certainly isn’t eliciting delight.

redeux··on Ask HN: AI Model for Adult Chat?
When you say “all popular models” do you mean the commercial models or open source as well? My assumption is that you’d need to run an oss model at the minimum and maybe apply some jailbreaking on top of that.
redeux··on Business books are entertainment, not strategic tools
It’s very poorly written then. It has a clickbait title and uses content that is easily dismissed before getting to the point.
redeux··on Business books are entertainment, not strategic tools
There are plenty of great business books out there that aren't pop business books. For every critique listed there's a corresponding book that covers the topic.

I hope people don't expect to get an MBA's worth of content from a single book. Business is a subject that can be taught in schools or learned through self-study - either requires time and dedication. Whichever method you choose, you'll still need real-world experience to master it.

redeux··on DOGE engineer's credentials found in past public leaks from info-stealer malware
They always do - eventually
redeux··on A 'Trump Card Visa' Is Already Showing Up in Immigration Forms
The question isn’t “is this legal,” it’s “will anyone stop him.” Though in the end the answer to both is likely the same.
