I doubt it will ever happen but it would probably help with our obesity rates among children.
Guilty. I don't feel strongly enough about this to really give anybody a hard time that uses their food stamps for it.. it's their choice, I'll roll my eyes and move on. It's just an opinion I have on the matter. I don't think what people buy with their food stamps is anywhere near a big enough problem to prioritize over most other things.
Obviously it's easy to speak from my perspective where I'm fortunate that I don't have to worry about accessing food.. but even when confronted with that my position remains unchanged. Maybe if you were arguing about healthy/neutral drinks I would feel different, but I've had enough people in my life develop obesity and diabetes from addiction to soda to regard it as marginally better for you than alcohol and tobacco.
I hope I live long enough to see society in this country start revolting against HFCS/sugar and excess sodium in our diets, it's death by diabetes and heart attacks/strokes.
The only time I use my iPad over a laptop or something is for reading, watching videos or if I'm simply using it as a glorified ssh/rdp client to work on my other machines, but that's only if I want to consume media or read before I want to do anything else, which isn't often, and I don't generally put away my laptop to switch a tablet if the laptop can already do it.
Little things like the complete lack of multi-user support is why I don't ever hand it over to my kids or anything, they're insistent that it's a personal device and I find that unacceptable when they market it as a general computing replacement device that can't do something that has been available for decades everywhere else, even amongst their own products.. and that's without even going into having the ability to run software without Apple's blessing.. sideloading is not convenient and I've decided I'm no longer interested in buying a tablet or computer for myself that fights me on what software I can run on it.
I probably wouldn’t replace it if something happened to it. iPad OS feels like a toy compared to a Mac.
I've also read somewhere, though I could never find conclusive information, that Nintendo actually intended for these sticks to have some sort of grease included but was unable to for some reason that wasn't as trivial to explain as "Greedy company wants players to keep buying gamepads"..
> Install Linux you mean.
I'll preface this by saying I should have mentioned it's an Nvidia Optimus equipped laptop, a Dell Inspiron i5 7559 and that I've been running Linux to some capacity or another on a variety of hardware for nearly two decades now and will probably never stop using it, so believe me I'm aware that trying Linux on otherwise landfilled hardware is always worth a consideration.
So no, I don't mean 'Install linux'. Until about 6 months ago I was running Fedora on it (historically Slackware and Kubuntu).
Nvidia Optimus is garbage and I refuse to put up with it any longer. Whether it was an Ubuntu derivative with its own means for handling this or not I've found that Nvidia Optimus under Linux is a recipe for tearing, poor battery life, lots of heat when doing seemingly nothing and frequently fighting Nvidia drivers failing to work when I update the kernel.
This laptop does not give you the ability to disable the Intel GPU and use just the nvidia GPU, so the only option that makes the laptop decently usable is to just not install nvidia drivers at all and use only the Intel GPU, but even then it was never stable enough to live with day to day. It didn't matter what distro I ran, it just randomly would freeze without any useful information in the logs as to why. I realize this is Nvidia's fault more than anyone else's but I just don't have the energy to fight it anymore, particularly because it was 100% trouble free anytime Windows 10 was running.
Once Windows 10 goes fully EOL I am either recycling this laptop or giving it away, it can be somebody else's problem. The replacement laptop will either be straight Intel or AMD, I'm done with Nvidia.
A happier story is the Asus U43F. I believe it was a first gen Core i5; it had a bios bug in it that prevented installing Windows 10, it was stuck on 7, didn't have any EFI support. Asus and Microsoft both refused to do anything about it so it was completely abandoned. I installed a linux distro on it and my niece used it during the pandemic when they were forced to do school from home. It worked out great. I got it back later and sold it to somebody who understood they needed to run Linux on it and as far as I know to this day it still works just fine.
The problem I've found is that the OS in general just isn't very responsive, everything is sluggish as hell in ways that it simply isn't with Window 10, but only when it comes to things like opening explorer, logging in and out, opening programs.. etc.. but programs themselves all seem to run just as well as they did under 10. shrugs, I think I just need to replace this thing finally.
I suppose this would be a concern for me if that was an attribute I actually think of when shopping for a laptop but it isn't. Getting back the good keyboard, MagSafe, HDMI and to a lesser extend an SD card slot was absolutely worth the trade of a thicker machine. These are tools, not art pieces. I wish Apple would take it even further and give us back the ability to replace memory and storage, but that will probably never happen.
I like the X11 protocol for things like forwarding over ssh but xorg itself has given me so many problems throughout my entire history of using Linux.
I understand the sentiment of that, but as harsh as this sounds I really don't care. The least bad thing Sony could do right now is refund everybody.
I learned my lesson with Sony back in the Sonic Stage days. They are not to be trusted with digital purchases, period.
I knew this because my brothers best friend died at 30 from it.
