regnull··on Google has officially turned these Nest thermostats back into dumb thermostats
Nest is a disaster. Same with their fire alarms. I spent a small fortune buying those, just to rip them out and dump into garbage. Google hardware - never again.
regnull··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
> We form an emotional impression first, then we build a belief around it, and then we go looking for facts that support it. This is my theory as to why we’re so divided in this country.

While this is true, the reason we are much more divided country than in the past is that today's tech actively amplifies this. You can always find the news to support your belief, and social networks are tuned to reinforce it. This is a vicious circle - the more we are divided, the more division is propageted.

regnull··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Razom is awesome. Donated to them for many years, went to their events. 100% recommended.
regnull··on YouTuber Says Cops Visited Him After He Built a Flock-Style Camera to Track Cops
Did his camera track them?
regnull··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
There is no contradiction between "most people do X" and "anyone can do whatever they decide".
regnull··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
It's all quite true. What is surprising though, that the SAME people who are very outspoken in criticizing Musk are driving Teslas. First, they would put some lame stickers to make the whole thing seem like a joke, now they don't even care to do that. It's almost like their self-proclaimed virtue ends where (tiny) financial pain begins.
regnull··on US imposes sanctions on ICC hours after former judge wins Nobel Peace Prize
You know what's funny? I live in a very progressive town. Everyone is pissed at Elon. Everyone drives Teslas. And not old one, clearly tons of them were purchased after he went "bad". Clearly people's principles are contingent on the car sale discounts.
regnull··on AI Protest in Montreal
I like how they carry posters from Matrix, Terminator, etc. They know the difference between fantasy and real life, right?
regnull··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I’m working on an open source platform similar to Grok Bot: https://github.com/regnull/openbot

Think of it as a synthesis of AI bots and actor model. For now I have a self hosted version where you can run a bunch of bots talking to each other.

regnull··on Show HN: Academa – Long-form STEM lecture videos generated by LLMs
Great idea, but buggy. My lecture started mid-sentence and ended abruptly (Kalman filter). Looking forward to when you guys get it working well. Also, I'm curious if the lecture description language is public.
regnull··on I wanted a clock that never needed setting. Things escalated
You can also use GPS as time source
regnull··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
How is it different from smashing your phone on the floor and destroying it when asked to unlock? Just because it's a code that wipes it makes no difference. I'm not saying the agents were right to ask for it, but it seems like if you feel that your rights are violated you should refuse to unlock the phone, not destroy the content in front of them.
regnull··on AI companies are shredding rare books
The source for this is "I've heard it from some guy". Before we freak out, perhaps make sure it's actually happening?
regnull··on [dead]
"This is an app the land thieves of the Zionist entity force Palestinians to install on their phones as part of their illegal apartheid permit system."

The article seems to be a little one-sided, perhaps?

regnull··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
It's either terrible planning or the most persuasive presentation they’ve ever given.
regnull··on Jobs and Software Is Fucked
If you don't have a full time job for a year, why don't you start a software business on your own? It's hard to succeed, but, successful or now, you will have something to show people and something that you are passionate to talk about. It will give you a new way to connect to people, and quite likely will help you to get hired. And who knows, maybe you will succeed.
regnull··on Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight
> When we launched, the number of people completing the form doubled.

I don't want to be that guy, but the title is misleading. The number of users completing the form doubled.

regnull··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
After I tried and failed to find any decent QR code generators online, I made one: https://www.cutearr.com/

Runs entirely in the browser, no tracking, no analytics, no ads.

regnull··on The desperation of NYTimes
Unsubscribe? And then miss out on all that excellent "There is another thing you should be worried about" content?
regnull··on Roughly a quarter of American professionals hit a wall in their careers
So three quarters are on the way up? Doesn't sound too bad.
regnull··on You can no longer Google the word 'disregard'
Googling "disregard" (in quotes) also works.
regnull··on You can no longer Google the word 'disregard'
You can easily Google "disregard definition", actually this is the first auto-prompted item. I do realize it doesn't make the same catchy headline.
regnull··on Steve Wozniak cheered after telling students they have AI – actual intelligence
It's not just AI. It's AI on top of society discontent that existed for a long time, but accelerated recently. The big underlying problem is, since at least 1970s every subsequent generation had to work harder to afford the same lifestyle as their parents. For a few decades it was balanced by the increasing women's participation in the workforce. But then, since 2008, we got banking crisis, both political parties focusing on outrage, pandemic, great resignation, generation of workers lost due to the lack of in-person contact, and now AI.
regnull··on I don't think AI will make your processes go faster
You know, AI could help you to produce better-looking charts.
regnull··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
What?
regnull··on In-person examinations at Princeton will be proctored starting July 1
People can still behave honorably despite all this. It's easy (and wrong) to justify someone's dishonorable behavior by pointing to the leaders.
regnull··on Palette Masters: 46 Zed themes derived from master painter color palettes
I was looking at Palette Inspiration (https://paletteinspiration.com/), featured on HN a few days ago. It has master palettes for 3,000+ painters — statistical color analyses across each artist's entire body of work.

So I had this idea: what if those palettes became code editor themes? I built 46 Zed themes (dark + light) from the color data of 23 master painters.

Each theme uses the artist's actual palette colors for syntax highlighting, UI chrome, and terminal colors. The dark themes use the palette's darkest tones as backgrounds; the light themes blend the lightest palette color toward white, so every artist has a distinctly tinted background.

The artists:

    Monet — Water Lilies
    Van Gogh — Starry Night
    Matisse — The Dance
Renoir — Luncheon of the Boating Party
    Pissarro — Boulevard Montmartre
    Roerich — Himalayas
    Sargent — Madame X
    Aivazovsky — The Ninth Wave
    Cezanne — Mont Sainte-Victoire
    Degas — The Ballet Class
    Da Vinci — Mona Lisa
    Rembrandt — The Night Watch
    Picasso — Guernica
Vermeer — Girl with a Pearl Earring
    Turner — The Fighting Temeraire
    Klimt — The Kiss
    Kandinsky — Composition VIII
Gauguin — Where Do We Come From?
    Caravaggio — Judith Beheading Holofernes
Raphael — The School of Athens
    Munch — The Scream
    Velazquez — Las Meninas
    Hokusai — The Great Wave
Install:

    git clone https://github.com/regnull/palette-masters-zed.git
    cd palette-masters-zed
    make install

regnull··on Ukraine Has Given Up on Trump
Is anyone surprised? There is this inexplicable affinity between Trump and Putin. It's genuinely baffling, since it serves him very poorly (there is strong support for Ukraine in the US). What do you make of it is up to you, whether it's just his general admiration for dictators or something else. Ukraine is absolutely right to go its own way, with or without American support. Fortunately, the EU appears to stand firm, at least for now.

regnull··on Claudshi – political events on Kalshi prediction plugin
A plugin for Claude Code and Claude Desktop that predicts political events using Kalshi prediction markets.

Claudshi connects to Kalshi via the kalshi-mcp MCP server to scan markets, analyze political events, estimate probabilities, place bets on mispriced markets, and monitor open positions.

regnull··on Observer Patch Holography (OPH)
OPH is a reconstruction program for fundamental physics. Spacetime, gauge structure, particles, records, and observer synchronization are treated as consequences of the OPH package rooted in overlap consistency on a finite holographic screen, together with the explicit branch premises stated in the papers.
