remir··on The computer will turn society upside down – Krishnamurti [video]
Extract from a public talk in Madras (Chennai), 1981.
remir··on Three Years from GPT-3 to Gemini 3
Grok has been integrated into Tesla vehicles, and I've had several voice interactions with it recently. Initially, I thought it was just a gimmick, but the voice interactions are great and quite responsive. I've found myself using it multiple times to get updates on the news or quick questions about topics I'm interested in.
remir··on Windhawk Windows classic theme mod for Windows 11
I wish there was a "power user" mode in Windows that you could activate and you'd get the ability to have classic themes (my MS themselves), classic Control Panel, no constant nudging, no weather/Xbox/Solitaire apps, etc...
remir··on Steam Frame
It's a console basically. It comes ready to play without much maintenance needed from the user.
remir··on Genie 3: A new frontier for world models
That's pretty much the basis for the simulation theory. See also "My Big TOE" (Theory of Everything) from Tom Campbell.
remir··on 'Europe must ban American Big Tech and create a European Silicon Valley'
It worked for China because they were in position of power. The US wasn't established in China and they needed Chinese users to grow their global user base and influence. Meanwhile, China had the wealth and power to say no and instead fund and develop their own homegrown tech equivalents.

Europe doesn't have that same level of power. If tomorrow morning you banned Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon, Salesforce in Europe, you'd destroy their economy.

What Europe needs to do is create the conditions for tech companies to emerge that could truly compete against US big tech. As long as European will prefer working for US corporation, there's no chance for Europe to compete. Simple as that.

remir··on Microsoft is killing Skype
The P2P aspect of Skype was really interesting. I remember there were even physical handsets you could buy that had Skype built-in, which I thought were cool. I remember seeing business cards with Skype username on them also. That's how popular the thing was!

It's honestly baffling how we're still relying on old PSTN/phone numbers to reach people in 2025.

remir··on Microsoft is killing Skype
I don't know anyone who prefer Teams over Slack.
remir··on iMac G4(K)
To me, that kind of product is what sets Apple apart from other companies in the industry. There's an optimism and playfulnes to that design that is refreshing.
remir··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop, the final edition
The reality is most people are well served by either Windows and/or macOS.

Both platforms have received billions of dollars in developpment by MS and Apple over the years and both have an extremely rich and mature app ecosystems. For most people, there's no real need or desire to use anything else.

That's it.

It's not an issue of drivers, games or app compatibility. If there were serious demand for Linux on the desktop, there would be good money to be made there and these issues would get fixed pronto.

remir··on How I run LLMs locally
Woah! Dude, I'm blown away by the app! The UX is wonderful! Just what I was looking for!
remir··on Augment, a GitHub Copilot rival, launches out of stealth
Possibly to create hype.
remir··on Single dose of LSD provides immediate and lasting relief from anxiety, study say
Never tried LSD, but a couple of weeks ago I consummed canabis oil from a small spray bottle I bought from our province's official canabis store. Not knowing much about canabis and proper dosage, I decided to try it, but it's clear I took too much...

The trip was like a mental battle between moments of lucidity and negative thought loops and light paranoia. It forced me to see my own automatic thinking process and this "inner voice" I have with more clarity.

I realized we can orient our thinking and it's polarity at any moment and it would influence our perception of reality. Sounds obvious on the surface, but it became clear when I realized negative thoughts were appearing and I would reorient my thinking elsewhere, the vibe changed and it felt like I was becoming more lucid.

remir··on VATSIM: The International Online Aviation Network
Discovered VATSIM by chance watching a Youtube video about MS FlightSimulator and was impressed by the dedication of the various participants. This is the kind of stuff that make the internet awesome.
remir··on VMware vSphere ESXi free edition is dead
*Along with the termination of perpetual licensing, Broadcom has also decided to discontinue the Free ESXi Hypervisor, marking it as EOGA (End of General Availability).

Regrettably, there is currently no substitute product offered.*

You can feel that the employee that wrote this knows this is a sinking ship.

remir··on VMware is now part of Broadcom
XCP-NG + Xen Orchestra is a solid combo. XCP-NG is based on Xen.
remir··on VMware is now part of Broadcom
XCP-NG + Xen Orchestra is a winning combo. If I had a large VM infra, that's the stack I would select. All open source too!
remir··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
When I got arrested and sent to prison last year for retweeting a government tweet

Could you expand on that? What the complete story?

remir··on Fuchsia F14
Beside Google, is there other companies contributing to and building products with Fuchsia?
remir··on ChromeOS is Linux with Google’s desktop environment
It became successful because the Linux-y stuff are invisible to the average non tech users, just like on Android.
remir··on GM to use Tesla charging network, joining Ford
Design by committee is my guess.
remir··on GM to use Tesla charging network, joining Ford
That was because they got sued by some patent troll: https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-20236114
remir··on Jeff Bezos announces $3.4B NASA contract to land astronauts on lunar surface
Space is going to be industrialized, sooner or later. Since it takes massive amount of capital to do so, you can pretty much limit this kind of thing to wealthy nations or multi-billionaires such as Musk, Bezos and Branson.
remir··on Netflix refuses to pay extra tax demanded by European internet service providers
Because most ISPs are also offering TV services and Netflix is eating their lunch, so they figured that asking for a "Cord cutter" tax was bad PR, but asking for a "Bandwidth tax" was somehow fair.
remir··on Netflix refuses to pay extra tax demanded by European internet service providers
I bet a lot of ISPs are also selling TV services and cord cutting is hurting their business.

So they got creative and figured out they can ask for a Netflix tax to make it seems like it's fair compensation for the "huge" bandwidth the service is consuming.

remir··on Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
Google needs a CEO that is driven and with a product-centric approach and this is not what I currently see in Sundar.

Google is extremely well positioned to respond to ChatGPT as they already have a very popular assistant in people's pockets and homes all over the world.

remir··on Google's Stadia Cloud Gaming Platform Shuts Down Today
The technology itself was good, but I think Google underestimated the investment needed to go from zero to having an internal first party studio pumping out titles to attract casual gamers.

They probably asked themselves "are we that serious about gaming?" and the answer was no, so they shut it down.

remir··on The sound of the dialup, pictured (2012)
I wish I could go back in time in the 90s and re-live those early internet moments from childhood.
remir··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I don't pirate things anymore. I subscribe to Spotify Premium for music. For movies/shows I subscribe to Netflix/Disney+ when there's something I want to watch and after a couple of weeks/months I unsubscribe when I'm done. If you can't afford 12$ or whatever it is for a Netflix subscription, I think you have other problems.
remir··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
I want to transition into UX/UI design, aka Digital Product Design eventually. Not sure that going to happen in 2023, but I'm collecting books and courses right now.
