reubensutton··on Omega-3 intake counteracts symptoms of anxiety and depression in mice
There’s never been a better time to be a mouse
reubensutton··on Unikernels: The Next Stage of Linux’s Dominance (2019)
Oh! That’s very cool
reubensutton··on Unikernels: The Next Stage of Linux’s Dominance (2019)
My gut instinct is always that using traditional kernels in a unikernel way is a bit suboptimal because it doesn’t become a “library operating system” in the same way that Mirage does.
reubensutton··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
It's a significant discount from previous funding rounds according to Techcrunch: "Giphy last raised $72 million at a reported $600 million valuation at the end of 2016"

reubensutton··on Ask HN: Who Is Firing?
I’ve been checking layoffs.fyi every day and it is incredibly bleak
reubensutton··on Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet
What’s the relevance of that to this post?
reubensutton··on Writing An Interpreter In Go (2016)
I studied compiler design at university and the subject matter here was a lot more approachable, but in that, it sacrifices a lot of the theory.
reubensutton··on Writing An Interpreter In Go (2016)
I worked through this soon after it came out and I enjoyed it a great deal
reubensutton··on Show HN: HintPod – Reach product/market fit quicker
This is a great idea. Any plans for a web version?
reubensutton··on Ken Thompson's Unix Password
I wonder how long it was between this password crypt approach and the first practical cracker for them
reubensutton··on Reddit Down?
I’m getting a lot of errors and failed requests
reubensutton··on The Prize in Economic Sciences 2017
I enjoyed this much more than Thinking Fast and Slow
reubensutton··on “This project violates the MIT license of Gemstash”
These are all pretty generic Ruby things - the first file is just configuring which components of gemstash to auto load, the other two are most probably auto generated when you make a new gem
reubensutton··on Plastc will cease operations and will not fulfill any pre-orders
On the London transport network you've been able to pay at the barriers with a contactless credit card in the same way as you would use an Oyster card for a couple of years now. It's weird that other transport networks haven't adopted it yet
reubensutton··on Plastc will cease operations and will not fulfill any pre-orders
What makes it impossible to emulate?
reubensutton··on Launch HN: FloydHub (YC W17) – Heroku for Deep Learning
I guess the profit margin comes from the $99/user fee
reubensutton··on Launch HN: FloydHub (YC W17) – Heroku for Deep Learning
This looks really cool, I'm slightly confused why the type of CPU intensive workloads only has a single core though?
reubensutton··on LibreTaxi – A free and open source alternative to Uber and Lyft
My concern with this is the problem of ensuring the safety of the person driving the cab and the real identity of the rider.

Lots of drivers will be reluctant because they can be stiffed on the bill. Lots of passengers will be reluctant to use it due to the inherent risk of riding with what is essentially a stranger.

reubensutton··on Show HN: Invite friends to SSH into your laptop using their GitHub handle
Being unconstructively snarky about a concept that another member of this forum has presented is both poor manners and defies the guidelines linked in the bottom of the page
reubensutton··on RedStar OS 3.0: Remote Arbitrary Command Injection
No, it's all closed source. The binaries aren't publicly distributed either, they seem to be the result of leaks.
reubensutton··on A Grain of Salt
I love how non-corporate the Tesla blog is: "It is deeply ironic that the only customer who apparently believes that this document prevents him from talking to NHTSA is also the same one who talked to NHTSA. If our agreement was meant to prevent that, it obviously wasn’t very good."
reubensutton··on WebGazer.js: Eye Tracking on the Browser
I wonder if anyone has experimented with using something like this to make an incredibly inexpensive assistive technology interface
reubensutton··on Update on InfluxDB Clustering, High Availability and Monetization
I wonder if clustering will be available in the cloud service?

We use a single server on Influx's cloud service for some internal metrics and it has been running without any interruptions for >6mo.

reubensutton··on Scala School
I think he may be confused with LinkedIn
reubensutton··on Giphy Closes $55M Series C at a $300M Post-Money Valuation
Why has Google never tried to monetise Google Images results in the same way?

My instinct is that they have considered it but that image search lacks the same intent that makes AdWords clicks so valuable to Google.

reubensutton··on Yahoo to Reconsider Sale of Web Business Instead of Spinoff
Not really, a proxy fight is when activist investors persuade a majority of the votes to support their vision for the business.
reubensutton··on Apple Watch owners use their nose to navigate the watch
This is one of the weirdest articles I have ever seen on WSJ
reubensutton··on The $10,000-a-year college education has arrived (1981)
I think the real problem in education is that credentials have become prized over learning.
reubensutton··on Next version of Shen will be BSD licensed
I had a read of the website, but I don't really understand what people use Shen for, but presumably, it has some benefits over other lisps?

Can anyone enlighten me?
