Circumnavigated earth by train and boat while building tech companies

reustle··on SaaS Is Dead
My small data point:

A few days ago I wanted my obsidian notes on a linux machine. Well, the files are synced via iCloud Drive (no Linux), so I asked it to solve it across my devices. It used Syncthing which has been working great.

Then yesterday obsidian desktop stopped loading (probably a bug in a plugin?). I’ve always wanted to do my notes in the browser, so it forked https://files.md and set it up on my home server pointed at my sync folder.

I was of the mindset that I’d not want to self host my day to day tooling, happy to pay, but it seems having the ability to run open source tools where I can say “just fix it” is too convenient to ignore.

reustle··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
Humans (IQ of X, non deterministic) can write deterministic code.

AI (IQ of Y, non deterministic) can write deterministic code.

Y is going to keep increasing, while X will not.

reustle··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
Love or hate Omarchy, it's movements like that which are finally going to convince diehard macos users to consider a more open and controllable OS. Small annoyances can be ignored, but after a while, there is too much noise.

I am sure my Macbook uses a RNG to decide whether or not I can use touch ID to unlock.

reustle··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features

reustle··on Chestnut – eGPU dock with open-source firmware
The direct eGPU link if you're curious https://comma.ai/shop/chestnut
reustle··on You can't buy 20 pieces of aluminum tube online
Seems inspired by https://noxmetals.co/quote which is great. We need plenty more suppliers like this around the US.
reustle··on Why the future is local app
Obsidian is just one example of how powerful local apps can be with a generic sync behind them (icloud sync, gdrive, obsidian sync, etc)

A few options exist in the market

reustle··on 7.1 Earthquake in Japan
You can keep an eye on this english tracker in the browser too https://earthquakesjapan.com
reustle··on Wind and solar generated more power than gas globally in April 2026
Curious, when you calculate 8-10yr payoff, are you taking into account the last 10-20 year kwh cost inflation trend as well?
reustle··on OpenGridWorks: The Electricity Infrasctructure, Mapped
Yeah. I get that adversaries can capture their own high res satellite photos and determine this, but this is just handing it to them on a silver platter.
reustle··on Apple's intentional crippling of Mobile Safari
Firefox on iOS is just a wrapper around Safari, since that is all Apple allows.
reustle··on Nanobot: Ultra-Lightweight Alternative to OpenClaw

reustle··on Vibe coding kills open source
There is a reasonable argument that there won’t be many new languages now that models are sufficiently trained. If anything, we may see languages optimized for models and not humans.
reustle··on Nike's Crisis and the Economics of Brand Decay
Same for me and a particular North Face light jacket. I’ve purchased the same model about 5 times, with noticeably lower quality materials in the more recent years. Faster wear, quicker fading colors, thinner.
reustle··on AI employees don't pay taxes
Maybe we should tax computers entirely

reustle··on 'Ghost jobs' are on the rise – and so are calls to ban them
I think there’s a good chunk of the SF tech event scene built around pulling in qualified email addresses, too. “Apply to attend”
reustle··on Schizophrenia sufferer mistakes smart fridge ad for psychotic episode
Reddit was originally built using fake accounts, who’s to say it ever really stopped.

reustle··on Cloudflare was down
Maybe centralizing the internet wasn’t a great idea after all, huh
reustle··on Bureau of Meteorology's new boss asked to examine $96M bill for website redesign
> but so many people have a religious level hatred of public employees

Are you sure this is the issue here? Seems there are lots of regulations around how much public employees can be paid (usually too low for skilled IT), how easy it is to move or fire them, etc. Sounds much easier to just hire a contractor.

reustle··on Aggressive bots ruined my weekend
Cloudflare is not a solution. Only leading to a further centralized internet.
reustle··on Tell HN: OpenAI now requires ID verification and won't refund API credits
Also terrible that purchased credits expire after 1 year. Not sure how that is legal.

https://community.openai.com/t/api-credits-amount-get-expire...

reustle··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
Render also pushes MinIO as their recommended equivalent to S3 for their customers (using docker), similar to Bucketeer on Heroku.

https://render.com/docs/deploy-minio

Hopefully this will finally push Render to build their own S3 wrapper.

reustle··on America is now one big bet on AI
> Do people actually buy into the absurdity of humanoid robots and robotaxis?

Have you ever taken a Waymo? You see them on every street in SF now.

reustle··on A New Internet Business Model?
I too miss the days of phpBB an IPB forums. Circle.so has come the closest to replicating some of that interface / vibe, but as expected, their pricing has crept up beyond a reasonable point for small projects / communities. The answer seems to be something self hosted.
reustle··on US to rewrite its past national climate reports
On a similar note, does anyone notice the issue of most official temperature readings in different climates often reading 5+C lower than what is actually observed locally?
reustle··on Denmark to tackle deepfakes by giving people copyright to their own features
Not sure why you're downvoted, it's an entirely valid question.

What we'll probably see is, celebrity look-alikes will be contacted to license out their own "features".

reustle··on Coding agents have crossed a chasm
Just remember, you can continue to do artisanal programming as a hobby or for your own projects. But if you have an employer, they're paying you for functional and secure features, not lines of code.
reustle··on Mullvad Leta
A simple explanation of what this does, shown somewhere on the page, would go a long way.
reustle··on Lieferando.de has captured 5.7% of restaurant related domain names
GrubHub did exactly the same in the US.

Up to 23,000 domains [1], and listed some restaurants on Google Maps without their permission [2]

[1] https://www.businessinsider.com/grubhub-registered-23000-dom...

[2] https://www.wired.com/story/ghost-kitchens-mystery-grubhub-l...

GrubHub was purchased from Thuisbezorgd.nl (Dutch) by Wonder Group (Marc Lore) a few months ago.
