rgacote··on Commodore 64 Basic for PostgreSQL
Sometimes you simply ignore asking why and sit in awe of the what of it all. Impressive and nostalgic.
rgacote··on Byte magazine artist Robert Tinney, who illustrated the birth of PCs, dies at 78
Robert's cover art set the tone for each issue. His covers danced a fine line between whimsical and informative.
rgacote··on Apple Reveals 'Vision Pro' Headset
Interesting that accessibility was not a theme (watched the online video, not the presentation). I'm interested to see what some low-sight folk might use this. Go shopping and have all the product labels magnified 20-30x?
rgacote··on New Hampshire set to pilot voting machines that use software everyone can see
And some positions allow you to vote for "up to" some number of candidates. Town selectman is a typical example.
rgacote··on Volvo is using Rust for its in-vehicle software
First thing that came to my mind was something doing garbarge collection (obviously not RTOS).
rgacote··on Ask HN: How to share a list of curated article links nowadays?
GitHub / GitLab pages? No RSS feed, but a popular way to share lists.
rgacote··on Hardening macOS
I'm also curious as to what is tiresome running as a regular user. I'm a developer and run two users (standard/admin) without any issue. Only issue I run into is having to switch to the admin user to run brew.
rgacote··on BBEdit is 30 years old today
Still my "go to" day-to-day text editor. My favorite editor when I used a Mac Quadra and my favorite editor today. Thanks Rich!
rgacote··on Vuescan – Software support for 6500 abandoned scanners
Have two copies, one for each ScanSnap S510M connected to a Mac. It simply keeps working.
rgacote··on How to set up a blog with Hugo and Cloudflare, and why you should
Been doing a lot of internal documentation with Gilab pages, Sphinx, and Myst (markdown for Sphinx). There are pre-built templates for the Continuous Integration for rebuilding the pages.
rgacote··on How FreeDOS Grew Up and Became a Modern DOS (2021)
Worked at an OEM and Microsoft charged a license fee for every processor out the door regardless of whether the system had DOS, Novell, or nothing at all installed.
rgacote··on Ask HN: How much was Python used from 1991 to 2006? What for?
Python 1.4: Desktop payment applications. Simple cgi-based dynamic website. System management scripts. Early Plone websites. Asynchronous desktop applications using Twisted.
rgacote··on Jim Warren has died
And given how tall Jim was, you could see his face floating over the Faire floor from across the entire hall.
rgacote··on OpenBSD 7.0
It's not like there's not 42 different flavors of Linux...
rgacote··on The fungal mind: on the evidence for mushroom intelligence
And wild carrots (Queen Anne's lace) look remarkably like poison-hemlock. Some people also have a dermal reaction to wild carrot as well.
rgacote··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
I've been using the SecretLabs Titan chair for a few months and am very happy with it. May be larger than you're looking for. https://secretlab.co/collections/titan-series
rgacote··on Sublime Text 4
Happy to see another satisfied BBEdit user. Been my go-to Mac editor since Mac Plus.
rgacote··on Ward: Modern Test Framework for Python
Some of my tests have dozens of parameter sets with a half-dozen parameters. Getting those all aligned with individual 'each' statements would be interesting.
rgacote··on Texas wants to charge Tesla and other EV owners annual fees
EVs run on the same roads and bridges that non-EV cars use.
rgacote··on Python Tornado, a Quick-Start Guide
Tornado has retrofitted async/await into the framework so you can use standard async modules.

The advantage I find to using frameworks like Tornado is the number of protocol edge cases they've addressed over the years.

I also appreciate the ability to deploy as a stand-alone multi-cpu application.

rgacote··on What's New in SQLite 3.35
Possibly the first step towards the ability to rename a column?
rgacote··on Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone
I've been using Scribo (scriboco.com).

In addition to sending files, I can request files from a third party. Includes document signing and payments (which I've not used).

rgacote··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
And DynDNS was definitely down.
rgacote··on Ask HN: Interesting Python mistakes for teaching CS to high schoolers?
A mistake I still occasionally make today is:

a = 123, # expecting a to be 123, not (123, )

rgacote··on Homebrew 3.0
As a long-time Python user, Homebrew jumping versions from 2.7.0 to 3.0 is a little disorienting. :}
rgacote··on Homebrew 2.6.0 supports running natively on M1/Apple Silicon/ARM
"...the beginnings of macOS M1/Apple Silicon/ARM support..."
rgacote··on This could lead to the next big breakthrough in common sense AI
And all sheep are not.
rgacote··on Rocket Lab will deliver 30 satellites to orbit and a 3D-printed gnome
Nobody, apparently. Article states the gnome will stay attached to the Kick Stage until it burns up on reentry.

RocketLabs has an interesting approach of leaving only the payloads in space, deorbiting the transport, and leaving as little debris behind as possible.

rgacote··on Nikola founder bought truck designs from third party
And Micro-Soft (yes, two words at the time) bought the core of what would become MS-DOS from a third party.

Is there something else going on here besides noise about who invented something or who purchased an idea?

rgacote··on The 2020 Ig Nobel Prize Winners
My favorite is the Peace Prize awarded to India and Pakistan for having their diplomats ring each other's door bells in the middle of the night and then run away.
