rhuru··on U.S. Corporations Are Openly Trying to Destroy Core Public Institutions
> the NLRB and FTC—are "unconstitutional."

Neither of them are "core public institution". NLRB has probably destroyed more jobs that all recessions combines and might have hurt the poorest and most vulnerable population lot more. They have worked to spread the cancer of collective bargaining powers, coercive unions and other protections for their favourite people at the expense of american consumers.

> FTC

This should be considered unconstitutional. If you provide a service that is cheap you are "predatory", if you provide a service that is very expensive you are "price gauging" and if you are average your are "colluding".

FTC is an evil eye of sauron that is on every damn successful business.

I hope "trader joes" succeeds in putting a stake into hearts of these two vampires.

rhuru··on Higher vehicle hoods significantly increase pedestrian deaths, study finds
In the top 10 most sold vehicles in USA 8-9 are trucks if I remember correctly. Ford F150 and Chevy Silvardo are typically number 1 and 2 consistently for decades. At that scale everything is likely to be diverse.

For the soyboys drinking their vegan milk and driving their lime bike to pride parade, it might come as a surprise, but it in indeed is. (<= This is an attempt to show that how any group can be dangerously maligned)

rhuru··on Higher vehicle hoods significantly increase pedestrian deaths, study finds
Common sense is the first casualty when any topic has political bias to it. This comment demonstrates that.

Large vehicles are important part of American economy and mostly driven by blue collar workers doing their work. For example things like plumbing, construction site work etc. Now a days environment scientists and engineers too drive these large vehicles as they are very important for their day to day work. Not everyone can drive Tesla Model 3 everywhere.

In fact majority of those large vehicles are you see are mostly driven by such needs ( pun intended).

But the research on this topic itself is pretty shoddy. For example one has to look at other variables. Who was driving when the accident happened ? Chances are someone who was rushing to his work.

A lot of other data points out that the drivers are at fault are often poor people going to their work in their work vehicle. Another data is he victims too are poor people going to their work and disregarding basic pedestrian safety.

These are not men pretending to be rugged.

rhuru··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
It doe not matter for Apple. If the competition is offering an equivalent car for $20K apple will simply charge $40K or $200k and there will be enough takers.
rhuru··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
> oddly imprecise position to me

Yes. It is intended to be so. Because being pedantic is now how you define these levels.

The ultimate goal is to run a large fleet of robo taxies wherever possible and Level 5 tech can do that everywhere on globe. One can get pedantic and ask if this would work in Antartica or on Dead Horse Bay or whether driving in sand dunes of Saudi Arabia is possible. But the folks who are trying to pedantic wont be happy with any definition either here.

rhuru··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
It does not have to go to NYC at all. If Waymo can show profitability is some city it is good enough. If it gets love in one city is is good enough for the rest of the world to put a red carpet before them.
rhuru··on Apple dials back car's self-driving features and delays launch to 2028
Apple will come up with a car to signal wealth. Like a $20K camry disguised in $200K white colored unrepairable car which will demand money if you want to drive it outside your city.
rhuru··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
No because:

1. Layoffs were a surprise. 2. When you leave Google there isn't a better option + you are easily employable elsewhere.

rhuru··on FedEx launches new e-commerce platform
Only if they do their current business well others can create effective competition for Amazon. It took me 3+ hours to just get a label from their website for a special hardware I had to ship. Fun part is that after I signup and create and account and login, they want me to "Create an account", which I suppose it is their internal terminology for some kind of payment profile. Then they did not allow me to create that either demanding I call up their customer service.
rhuru··on Pixar to undergo 20% layoffs in 2024
There is a reason why layoffs always happen as a surprise and kept a secret. Now everyone thinks they might get laid off. The folks who are easily employable will switch. This might be the end of Pixar.
rhuru··on GM buys out nearly half of its Buick dealers, who opt to not sell EVs
Common sense. EVs are amazing but they are not where close to being practical replacement for ICE engines. Governments should stop subdizing rich people's EVs and insteead help make more efficient and cheaper ICE engines.
rhuru··on What is the point of a public key fingerprint?
> That's only as secure as the weakest CA in their trust store though, right?

You are absolutely right. Not only the weakest CA but now you needlessly involve a lot of third (or at least one third party).

It is not something I like but some of our partners demand it.

rhuru··on What is the point of a public key fingerprint?
Where I work we often have to exchange keys with partners. Key fingerprint is often used as a mechanism to make sure the partner really has OUR public key. We email the key first and then another known employee is expected to verify the fingerprint on phone.

Another approach is to host the keys on a HTTPS endpoint on our official domain name and their servers can fetch it programmatically and rely on TLS to verify that it is indeed our endpoint.

rhuru··on IBM Diversity Efforts Targeted by Stephen Miller's Legal Group
Saw the leaked IBM video and it is clearly deeply racist against white people. Glad someone is sueing them.
rhuru··on Santa Cruz plans high-rise living as a fix for sky-high housing costs
Santa Cruz is an ultra left town, no matter the policies it will be run over by cultural enrichers stealing from stores, pooping on street and carjacking.
rhuru··on A lost X-Files song

rhuru··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
There is little to no inertia inside google to build and invent stuff. But there is a massive bloat to ship stuff.
rhuru··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
Well, stupid laws will get stupid compliance.

The idea that asking companies to fire their existing employer just to hire some "citizen" employee is dumb beyong measure. H1B visas should not exist in first place. Just give green card and let the person be citizen.

The problem is compounded by the racial quota for Indians in greencards. Indians are extremely good at hacking systems and longer they stay in that queue, they would totally destroy this sort of idiotic system. (This is a complement to Indians).

rhuru··on Biogen-Sage Therapeutics postpartum depression pill priced at $15900
1. It is not the price of the pill. It is the price of the entire 14 day course. 2. There are only 500K or mothers who suffer from PPD each year in USA. May be 200K or so of them would actually be willing to take medicines. And if the course costs say $100 then it would be $20M in revenue. Do you really think it is possible to run it profitably while employing 100s of people making and testing and distributing these pills ? Especially given that infants are involved ?
rhuru··on Scientists Are Researching a Device That Can Induce Lucid Dreams on Demand
In Advaita vedanta there are 4 states of existence of self.

First is the outer world where there is a concept ok others and physical world. This is the world is beyond our control. There is suffering in this world.

Next is the dream state where we can control everything. This is illuminated by our own mind. Even then there is limits of what we can do. Continuous lucid dreaming gives us fatigue for those experiences.

Third is dreamless state where there is nothing but pure consciousness. This is one of the best states as there is only self and nothing else. You can experience this during general anesthesia etc.

Fourth which Advaita vedanta calls the ultimate realization is where you realize that you are the self and there is only self. That the pure consciousness is singular and same for all. In fact there is no all. There is just consciousness.

I think we are approaching the same line of thinking but via biology.

rhuru··on Apple unveils the new MacBook Pro featuring the M3 family of chips
I switched from Lenovo X1 Carbon and totally gave up on Windows and bought an Mac again. Windows has become some kind of shitty garbage of an OS. Reminds me of the toolbar creep in IE that use to happen 10 years ago. Now the entire OS is fucking like that.
rhuru··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
It is a storm in a teacup. Budweiser's execs will soon course correct, fire the gender studies majors they hired for their creative team and move on.

Budweiser is not the first nor the last for overdoing the Woke Inc. drama. (Note that Woke itself is a fleeting bottoms up term). Large businesses course correct pretty well.

rhuru··on First malaria vaccine reduces early childhood mortality
I think a lot of people simply ignore the basic fact that vaccines aren't safe by nature, they have to be proven to be safe through very very rigorous processes. Anti-vaxxers might come across as a lunatic but their extreme behaviour does not make opposite is true by default.
rhuru··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)

I am no entirely use if that moral implications of their actions or the legal distinction of different crimes is easily conveyed when the disadvantaged person has fentanyl pumping through their blood stream.
rhuru··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
Term "snowflake" is also something that is will stick around forever now which can be used to describe people who downvote my comment. So is "Cancel Culture". Bottoms up worlds will live on.
rhuru··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
Reduction is a negative word. Could trigger the snowflakes at your office.

I think the correct term is "reassessment of human resources" or "restructuring", it is a bit like guy who steals your car at gunpoint in SF but is kind enough to ask you your preferred pronoun.

rhuru··on George Carlin's "Soft Language" (2019)
Each generation complains about the new generation's usage of new terms. My younger siblings use the phrases like NPC so often, that irritates many older people in the family.

From my understanding the top down terms enforced by language police at universities, public schools and corporations invariably end up becoming joke over time. The bottom up terms which were created by bullies, incels, sluts, car mechanics, bartenders continue to stick around and improve the language for the better.

Initially it is hard to determine which one is which. LGBTQ for example appears to be a bottoms up term that gained popularity and will be around for a long time. LGBTQIA2S++-- is likely going to end up as a joke. "Preferred Pronounce" another nonsense promoted by the bloat at corporate HRs (diversity departments) too in my opinion would end up as material for stand up comics down the line. There are more modern bottoms up terms like Incel, NPC etc. will stick around for a long time just like YOLO, FOMO etc have become pretty mainstream.

The better care our soldiers get is a result of medical field advancement, better economy and has very little to do with the terminology.

rhuru··on How to Download and Install Linux
Times change, people change and companies pivot. Linux has won and Windows is more like cancer today. We should be glad that Microsoft has shown the ability to adapt unlike say RIM (blackberry).
