riams··on Dropbox hires a COO: Dennis Woodside, former Motorola Mobility CEO
How long was he actually at Motorola? It seems like he was just there to help Google flip it.
riams··on The Register puts Soylent to the test
Soylet has done a great job with getting media attention. Thumbs up for that!
riams··on You are not Steve Jobs
Steve was one of the best product guys this world has seen. The same qualities that this article complained over, were the qualities that also allowed him to provide the world with all these gadgets. There's two sides to every coin, and no one's perfect.
riams··on Why tiny Stockholm has the most stunning startup ecosystem since Tel Aviv
I've interviewed with Jacob at iZettle. Great guy and team!
riams··on Ask HN: How have you made "quick" money before?
Arbitrage on virtual goods from different countries/regions. Got lucky and got 15k in a week.
riams··on Do Female Executives Drive Start-up Success?
Once again, this is the product of unclear thinking, not distinguishing between correlation vs. causation. This is not a hard concept to grasp, so I'm really disappointed in mankind that we let this mistake happen so often.

Since gender equality is such a hot and sensitive topic, I can see how it incentivized people to jump to such conclusions.

riams··on Jack Dorsey: Today Starbucks Signed up for Square
It's not a zero sum game. As more mainstream consumers learn about and start using Square, it will undoubtedly give a great boost to small businesses using Square as well.
riams··on Jack Dorsey: Today Starbucks Signed up for Square
Losing a decent chunk of change? How can they lose something they wouldn't otherwise have had at all? It's only normal to assume that they have special terms for Starbucks, but it doesn't mean they're losing anything.

Unless you mean that Square is providing the service at a loss to Starbucks?

riams··on What hackers don’t know about business
Doesn't LTV stand for "[customer] life time value," i.e. the amount of money you'll be able to generate from a customer during his/her time with your business, and not "long term value"?
riams··on Go East, Young Man
I work in marketing and get the same salary as in my home country Sweden, but with accommodation and food paid. I wasn't hired as a local. It really depends on what you do though; my banker friends make waaaay more.
riams··on Go East, Young Man
As someone who's recently made the move to China (Hong Kong, and not teaching English), I can say it's a great way for native English speakers to jump start their careers and get responsibilities much faster than at home.

Hong Kong is a bit easier getting used to due to a free internet, less pollution, and stricter food safety laws. But I guess there are more opportunities on the mainland.

riams··on Sony Ericsson Forces A Fan Site Into Submission
Yeah, Sony was not so smart here. However, Apple has also done something similar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_Secret. However, Apple really seems to have come to their senses in recent years.
riams··on Ask HN: What is your ideal Android phone like?
I haven't come to a good answer for this myself, but lately, I've been wanting a simple phone more and more, one which doesn't clash with the feature-set of the tablet. One that does simple things, like syncing, texting, and calling, really well. With an insane battery life. Design-wise, it has to be clean and beautiful, both the phone itself, and its UI.
riams··on Ask HN: What type of chair are you spending most of your life on?
My Aeron chair that I've had for less than a year.

Does its job, looks sexy, but might not be the chair that has the most value for its price.

riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
You should root and install 2.3.4 via Odin. The battery difference is substantial.
riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
>> I tried to use Titanium Backup PRO but it didn't work for removing or freezing them.

Worked for me. What happens if you launch them after attempting to freeze?

>> Screenshot to take screenshots

You don't need an app for this. Hold menu + power button.

riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
Sorry for being a noob, but how do unordered lists work on HN?
riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
It lasts a little more than a day, regular usage, not too much gaming. I noticed that the latest 2.3.4 ROM really helped boost battery life.

As a side note: Samsung has released an official 2000mAh battery for the SGS2. It's very reasonably priced here in Sweden, at less than 300 SEK. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239719

riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
From what I can gather, the MIUI SGS2 port isn't officially supported by MIUI, and has a few bugs and issues. Do you think it's good enough to use on a day-to-day basis?
riams··on Ask HN: What Android apps do you use?
Some of my recommendations:

- Hacker News Reader by Corey Trager. Currently the only client that works for me.

- DrioidWall, sort of like LittleSnitch for the Mac, you can block apps from accessing the internet.

- JuiceDefender. Some say that it doesn't work, but after customizing the settings, I find extends my battery pretty well.

- Douban.fm. Good online radio app for those of us outside US without access to Pandora et al. Chinese startup so speeds can be slower at times.

- For my todo list, I use Flick Note as a widget extended to cover an entire homescreen (with TouchWiz 4.5), synced to Simple Note. I also use Flick Note for all other note-taking needs, and have frozen/disabled a few default apps with similar features. On my Macs I use Notational Velocity to edit the list and GeekTools to display on my dekstop.

riams··on Early SourceForge Developer Tim Perdue Passes Away
Does anyone know how he died? Can't seem to find anything about it.
riams··on Editorial: Dear Nokia, you cannot be serious
Wow, this was a very insightful and good analysis to which I agree. Thanks.
riams··on Has China Wiretapped 20,000 Hong Kong Cars?
Wow, this is going to be big news if true.

However, I lost a little faith in the article once Epoch Times was mentioned: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Epoch_Times#Criticism

riams··on Tell HN: Our experience with Groupon
What do you mean by scary?

I can understand if you don't want to disclose exact figures on cannibalization, but can you provide any indication?

riams··on Tell HN: Our experience with Groupon
How high was cannibalization, i.e. existing customers using the Groupon deal instead of paying full price?
riams··on Third richest man in China lives on $20 a day, eats same meals as workers
Actually, Hangzhou is a very rich city by Chinese standards due to their entrepreneurial culture. Despite "only" having 2 million inhabitants, LV sells the most items in Hangzhou compared to all other Chinese cities. Also, their more central streets are lined with luxury car shops.

$20/day does not seem too unreasonable for local Hangzhounese.

riams··on Google I/O Live Stream
Thanks! Working.
riams··on Google I/O Live Stream
Yeah, I'm in Sweden. Not working. :(
riams··on Google I/O Live Stream
In Europe, not working here either.
riams··on Microsoft to buy Skype for $7 billion
I think you are overestimating the average computer user. As personal computing and broadband access has risen quickly, so have the class of technophobes.

Also, a product will seldom sell itself. The Skype brand has plenty of intangible value, for instance from their collaboration with Oprah.
