Thanks for sharing. How do you manage the 48 hour and 7 day fast ? I presume you only consume water and nothing else. I skip breakfast always and can skip lunch and breakfast on alternate days. Are there any trick's to learn to fast for more than 20 hours while being mentally active like coding ?

The op asked about Sati not smrti.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sati_(practice)

It is a Hindu religious practice of taking the life of a Hindu widow after her Husband dies( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sati_(practice) ). The central idea is to prevent remarriage with other caste men and preserve the purity of caste system.

You spoke valid points and after that you brought islam without any context. How does the reference to islam is coherent with your previous points?

> He asked me if I came into recitation, I said yes. He asked me if I participated in recitation and I said yes.

Non native English speaker here. What does "came in to recitation" mean. Recitation is the act of repeating something. What was the Recitation about and how can you go in to recitation. Could you please explain ?

Does Fabrice Bellard knows any other language other than 'c' ?. Looks all his works are in 'c'. Just trying to look if there is a correlation among the 100x programmers and the number of languages they know. Because being extremely proficient in a language is important to be highly productive.

At the bottom of the page there is this the mention of "Charlie Gordon". Who is he ?. Any place to find the works of him.

They use the batch size as 1. That is surprising to me as all the online course i see the batch size b/w 32 and 256.

Also this is a open source https://github.com/burtonator/polar-bookshelf . By the way its really awesome project. I am very glad i found it.

Seriously can't understand why this post is getting upvoted so much(2896) as of now. Is there something i am missing.

The degree to which the nations majority religion can be criticized is a good indicator of the individual's freedom. UK and US has the most individual freedom then as may be india has a lesser degree and then the middle east has almost zero individual freedom.

"We want only people who are passionate and are risk takers"

554 was most productive from personal experience without lunch break.

Has anyone used tor regularly for a long time for news consumption and as a social interaction with like minded people ?

Isn't it too costly to produce vacuum for every object pick ?

I don't understand why a Robot with basic movement and limited set of actions like picking an object is not popular. The idea is to make apps for them like mobile apps that will do specific jobs like keeping the room tidy or washing dishes. Is building a robot really hard than it looks (without software included) ?

MATLAB can charge for the software but making it opensource would be really ethical considering the software is used heavily in research. More eyeballs to view the correctness of the software is crucial.

What is GEB ?

Its better to download and watch as it stutters very frequently.

When writing about Elon negatively start the core argument in the first line. Go straight to the core of the argument instead of wining about elon fan's e.t.c. The reason is simple, the people who write negatively about Elon have accomplished very little compared to Elon and so the reader will give as little time to judge your argument and if you waste your first few lines with BS then there is no chance of getting people to read the entire article.

Technology is supposed make human work less. Ironically as the technology advances the working hours has also increased. Bertrand has written nice short summary http://www.zpub.com/notes/idle.html in the 1930's which is sadly very much relevant today.

This argument is nothing new. Always some portion of the people who benefit from the system will support it no matter how evil it is. The condescending comment on Hacker News comments is not going to persuade simply because the premise that "self policing for the government might be good in some cases" is totally wrong.

Its sad technology is being used for evil. What are the suggestions to a programmer who fears his native country might adopt such systems. Are there any open source projects focused on combating such systems ?

To understand real indian culture with the proofs and evidence this short essay(Annilation of Caste) will gives the idea http://ccnmtl.columbia.edu/projects/mmt/ambedkar/web/reading.... Once you read this essay you will have pretty clear idea when speaking to indians about their motivations. Also this author arundathi roy is fascinating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddKzcrwC9os. She has shared stage a lot of times with Noam Chomsky too.

The following exert is from the https://archive.org/stream/faif-2.0/faif-2.0_djvu.txt. If you read above this paragraph its clear stallman did not for the purpose of his ego choose the ideology. Its the other way.

<BEGIN> Already renowned for his work with Emacs, Stallman's ability to match the output of an entire team of Symbolics program- mers - a team that included more than a few legendary hackers itself - still stands as one of the major human accomplishments of the In- formation Age, or of any age for that matter. Dubbing it a "master hack" and Stallman himself a "virtual John Henry of computer code," author Steven Levy notes that many of his Symbolics-employed rivals had no choice but to pay their idealistic former comrade grudging re- spect. Levy quotes Bill Gosper, a hacker who eventually went to work for Symbolics in the company's Palo Alto office, expressing amazement over Stallman's output during this period:

I can see something Stallman wrote, and I might decide it was bad (probably not, but somebody could convince me it was bad), and I would still say, "But wait a minute - Stallman doesn't have anybody to argue with all night over there. He's working alone! It's incredible anyone could do this alone!" 16 <END>

Its not just taking notes. Its a common pattern while fixing bug, you encounter a code path that with a 3 minute time you can make it so much better, but should you continue on your original plan or take 3 minutes to make the code better is the question. The blog says don't spend time on diverging the original plan instead mark it for later. Another good name would be "breath first traversal development"

Definitely not satire. Curious why do you think so ?.

Op of the thread here. Could some who has the authorization to change the title of the post please change "Holtz" to "Hotz". If you are reading this apologize "Hotz".

You missed the real point. Its not how he uses vim. It's a rare chance to experience how a 1000x programmer works. Its a gift to see a very bright, proven programmer code. To look at how an accomplished knowledgeable coder thinks, google's with the kind of keyword, what websites he vists, the songs he plays, even the kind of drinks, food e.t.c(for 11 hours straight some drinks might be suited best). If you work for a big tech company( and in the right team) you might get to see over the shoulders of 1000x devs. But for the rest of us this is the closest to looking over the shoulder of 1000x dev at work.

Same in india its called the dowry system. But now women are employed more and guess what its not changing as much it should be. Its strange that the educated employed women is expecting dowry from her parents to give it to her husbands(in most cases). The core problem is its considered a status issue. If the grand marriages are not celebrated and looked down then this might change.
