rick_bc··on Dropping out is probably not for you
Neither John McCarthy nor Dennis Ritchie was college dropout. Steve Job sort-of was.

rick_bc··on ORMs don’t kill databases. Developers do.
Does it work 99% of the time though?
rick_bc··on Was .NET All a Mistake?
Slashdot still has many excellent comments.

Just don't read it real time. Wait a day, and the good comments will be moderated as such.

rick_bc··on XKCD's Randall Munroe on Google+ requiring your gender to be public
<I arleady replied to another posts of yours. But here it is :) >

Incidentally a few women expressed similar opinions a few years ago on two other forums I visited.

Really, if he used "some women" (edit: or many women I know) would you have any objection?

I actually think that "many women" isn't exaggeration.

Similar issues are discussed frequently in many forums. It's only you don't know what you don't know!

Edit: Ok. I exaggerated. But we really don't know.

rick_bc··on Economist's View: "The Mathematics Generation Gap"
Just count in binary, everything will be easier.

110 * 111 = 101010

Very easy, don't you think? :)

rick_bc··on The Carrying-Cost of Code: Taking Lean Seriously
I think "carrying-cost" is ok. Perhaps not for newbies, but for seasoned developers it's clear what this is about without translations.
rick_bc··on Apple IPad’s ‘Buzz Saw’ Success Cuts PC Sales at HP, Dell
The losts are in revenues, not units.

rick_bc··on Celebrating 150 years of MIT

rick_bc··on Why Kindergartners Make Better Entrepreneurs than MBAs: And How to Fix It

rick_bc··on The Node Beginner Book
Kind of off-topic, but I don't really understand what Node.js is about until this presentation.

rick_bc··on Red Hat's top secret Java Killer/Successor: The Ceylon Project
You don't have to be this rude :)

Some people use Java in spite of the language: they just like the vast libraries.

rick_bc··on Erlang vs Java memory architecture
It looks like an entry about what Java can learn from Erlang.

It's not about learning Erlang.

I am pretty sure Java guys know quite well about various memory models. But early Java was kind of experimental, so backward compatibility affects what they can change now.

rick_bc··on Ask HN: How did you learn distributed computing/systems?
Is hightscalablility.com really the best place to start?

I'd thought that reading some classic distributed computing books is a must.

rick_bc··on Every Unicode character shown once per frame as a 33-minute movie
No, it should make you feel proud -- understanding the world through 26 (or other small numbers of) alphabets.

(Speaking as an asian.)

rick_bc··on Competition Doesn't Matter. Look at Dropbox.
OK. Vaporware does not matter.

I think we all know that :)

rick_bc··on Top 20 Programming Languages According to Wikipedia Page Views
You may want to include page views of wiki page in other (human) languages.
rick_bc··on Android openness withering as Google withholds Honeycomb
Right. But they does not claim HoneyComb is open source.

(They does not deny it outright though. That's little devilish (evilish not a word!), but I can sympathy with them)

rick_bc··on Why I'm Close to Giving Up on Windows Phone 7, as a User and a Developer
But it's not a job for him; it's his business.
rick_bc··on Microsoft just bought Nokia for $0
But is that legal?

Even if it's legal, the other manufacturers will just abandon Windows Mobile 7. Not a nice scene.

rick_bc··on Microsoft just bought Nokia for $0
Well, it's actually Intel.
