rienbdj··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
Maybe Python isn’t a language for when performance is a big concern (at least in the user code) and that’s OK?
rienbdj··on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5
Why did they call it “humanities last exam”?

Will an LLM topping this bench be the end of humanity? The doomer rhetoric has no place in what should be an objective measure.

rienbdj··on Anthropic S-1
Yeah why?

I bounce between codex and cc all the time. There is no moat there.

rienbdj··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Of course they compete with each other. Codex and Claude Code have direct feature overlap.

But they do have a common enemy in open weight models.

rienbdj··on How close can pure functional programming get to C?
For some categories of mistake, yes.
rienbdj··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
Yes maybe the long term impact will be there won’t be a technology sector (at least not so dominant as it is now). Instead companies in other industries will have larger technology functions with teams of agents.
rienbdj··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
It’s a shame.

Rust compile times are an issue for agent throughput.

C# can approach Rust speeds with some effort, but generally has faster compile times and is less verbose.

rienbdj··on Fable Took My Job
This is covered in the post.
rienbdj··on Reasons to Dislike AI Coding
When you hand code you build an incremental understanding of how the code works. This can be very valuable in cases where precision is needed and change is costly.

The skill of using LLMs for code generation is in recognising these scenarios; knowing when to use it and when to not.

rienbdj··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
Back then we couldn’t imagine something that could do all of those things and yet not feel intelligent or human.
rienbdj··on What Meta got right with Muse
There will come a point where the local models are good enough (and iPhones powerful enough) for this to be possible without privacy downsides.
rienbdj··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
The Dutch are masters at making high density places liveable.
rienbdj··on Go Concurrency Distilled
Is a Go channel equivalent to a Haskell tvar ?
rienbdj··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Currencies are established by force (taxation backed by militaries and police)

Sure, the government could force a format change if they really want to.

rienbdj··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
Great but you will no longer be paid to do what you love.
rienbdj··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Sure they can make a mandate but the grunts on ground will still get sent pptx files by their vendors.
rienbdj··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
The challenge is engaging with external orgs. They will send you office docs and it creates friction when they cannot be reliably edited and returned. Even just opening them can be unreliable.
rienbdj··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Bazel can even skip the final artefact!
rienbdj··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Most PRs only touch a handful of targets so cache hits are extremely high in practice.
rienbdj··on Microsoft agentically ports Copilot runtime to Rust for $120K
If runtime performance is the goal it’s easier to port the required libraries to another language at this point.
rienbdj··on Anecdotally, programmers dislike "reduce"
So rather than provide a runtime or compiler optimization, we force the programmer to do it by hand. This is why I don’t like Python philosophically.
rienbdj··on OpenAI agents carried out an undisclosed attack on RubyGems
This API may turn out to be manipulating humans via email.
rienbdj··on Multi-Agents LLM Financial Trading Framework
If you like building but have no capital you might release something like this that works.
rienbdj··on Analyzing student votes across AI models for college essay help
Students? The couldn’t even write the essay!
rienbdj··on Digging the grave of my skills: Hollywood creatives training AI to do their jobs
It’s harder and less lucrative than short social media spots.
rienbdj··on Bun 1.4 Rust rewrite is not looking good?
What’s wrong with node? Genuine question
rienbdj··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
It’s easier to imagine a super power than the end of capitalism, apparently.
rienbdj··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
This blog post annoys me a little. Not the post itself - it’s great - but how it has been used to prop up thousands of lazy arguments against innovations over the years.
rienbdj··on Two wheels, a few tradeoffs, and gas prices
The noise pollution can be awful.

If you’re not going so far, can an eMTB be even more practical?

rienbdj··on Rust project goals: Immobile types and guaranteed destructors
This sounds like a similar approach to OxCaml
