rmnoon··on We spent $20 to achieve RCE and accidentally became the admins of .mobi
Make sure you read the article since it doesn't look like they're doing that at all. The sentence you cited is pretty tricky to parse so your reaction is understandable.
rmnoon··on The end of Airplane.dev
How did I not know you were an original cofounder at Heap?
rmnoon··on Launch HN: Unthread (YC S22) – Customer support, entirely within Slack
This is really awesome! A couple questions.

1. Does the customer have to auth the bot at all?

2. What permissions does it need?

3. How's your infosec policy? Have you gone through a SOC2 yet?

4. What about Teams?

5. What about single channel guests (our workspace and theirs)?

rmnoon··on Speeding Up the Webcola Graph Viz Library with Rust and WebAssembly
Did you look at any alternative graph layout algorithms? There are non-quadratic ones that are quite good (like Barnes-Hut and its variants). I did a Typescript port of ForceAtlas2 a couple years ago that could run on a Web Worker (so as to not block the interactivity of the graph) but never got around to open sourcing it.

I'd be amazed to see what this level of profiling skill could do on a fancier algorithm.

rmnoon··on Translation from VC-Backed PR Jargon to English of Magic Leap CEO Statement
This isn't really accurate. VCs would much rather get paid 20+% carry than 2% management fees (and raising a follow-on fund would be quite difficult if you failed to make returns and publicly blew most of your fund on a boondoggle like Magic Leap).
rmnoon··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
Will let the parent reply but at a high level (at least for comprehensive insurance) there is a) a fairly competitive market (and comparison shopping is possible) for car repairs and b) a limit to the cost of a repair (the value of a new comparable car) that we don't / won't place on human lives.
rmnoon··on AMD is determined to gets its rightful datacenter share
Out of curiosity have you read benchmarks recently on Rome? Per-core performance is quite competitive now (unlike in the recent past).
rmnoon··on New logo
Is anybody else reminded of the old Hasbro electronic Simon game? Same 4 colors, same basic orientation.
rmnoon··on Tell HN: 17 years on the same game
I spent _so_ many hours as a kid on RetroMUD. Nothing else will improve your typing and console scanning skills like being a healer during a massive boss fight.

rmnoon··on Job-Scoped Hadoop Clusters with Google Cloud
What about the traditional IO / data locality win of having your processing colocated with your DFS? Is GCS bandwidth that amazing?
rmnoon··on How We’re Building a Business to Last
In almost this exact space: https://aws.amazon.com/elasticsearch-service/
rmnoon··on How We’re Building a Business to Last
On your last point at least being a proper SQL database makes the switching costs _into_ Cockroach lower, too.
rmnoon··on How We’re Building a Business to Last
He covers that in the post. TL;DR yes.
rmnoon··on The Rules of Optimization: Why So Many Performance Efforts Fail
I don't think most new engineers intuitively grasp the ramifications of Amdahl's Law:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl%27s_law

It really doesn't matter if you can make an individual task 1000x faster if your program only spends 1% of its time doing that task.

rmnoon··on 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School
Wrong decade...
rmnoon··on Dropwizard 0.8.0: Java framework for ops-friendly, high-performance web services
What's the primary win of doing this? Isn't DW still tied to Jetty which has a more traditional threading model?
rmnoon··on Mac Pro
I thought it was nice too until I tried using it on Chrome on Windows. Scrolling is completely broken (have had to reload the page a few times...)
rmnoon··on Cloudera announces real-time query engine for Hadoop
They're both Dremel clones, but this one seems to be a lot more complete (as Drill is just getting started).
rmnoon··on Hacker News Redesign
Here's a friendly critique: using the monetary cost of your education to establish your credibility is not a good idea.
rmnoon··on iPads using iOS 6, high-res displays showing up in Ars server logs
Also, I can specify whatever the hell source IP address I want on my packets.
rmnoon··on The Zuckerberg Tax
By only taxing publicly traded equity, it seems like they'd also hit small retail investors pretty hard too, while only serving to retard valuable new IPOs even more.
rmnoon··on Oh my, T-Mobile just texted me my password.
They also do this cute thing where they silently drop any characters they don't like (non alphanumeric) when you make a new password.
rmnoon··on Path just evolved with an entirely revamped product
I'm a techie and I don't know why it's different/better than just posting everything on facebook.
rmnoon··on Clojure & Python, Side by Side
In addition to performance metrics, this site has implementations of their benchmarks in all the languages they test.

It's not pretty and side-by-side, but it's fascinating.

rmnoon··on New Stanford class on Cryptography
This class blew my mind. Don't take it if you're even a little bit paranoid already. =)
rmnoon··on Stanford to host more online classes
FYI: the "CS-101" course is a really really basic introduction to computational thinking. If you want intro programming you probably want CS106A, which hasn't been put into this format yet.

101 is taught by Nick Parlante, though, who was one of my favorite profs at Stanford.

rmnoon··on Unhate by United Colors of Benetton, the controversy
That's Hu Jintao, not Hugo Chavez.
rmnoon··on Enrollment for Stanford's online DB class now open
I took this class from Prof. Widom at Stanford. It was...meh.

Are SQL triggers still relevant? How much relational algebra do you really need to know? I think I've used this stuff maybe once since then.

rmnoon··on Why I left Google. What happened to my book. What I work on at Facebook.
There's a lot of cool science being done in Valley startups...you just have to dig a little deeper to get through all of the mobile-y social-y noise.
