rndmind··on TikTok owner ByteDance explores self-designed chips
What a shady, shady company.
rndmind··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
big trucks are so cliche and should go the way of steam engines, but the government doesn't have the right to limit how big they can be.

The registration fee's should be much, much higher.

Tragedy of the commons is a real thing, it's not a pet peeve, you disingenuous dumbass

rndmind··on Why can't the government put a limit on car sizes?
I believe the government should increase yearly registration costs exponentially based on lower MPG.

If you get 10-18 MPG... you must pay 10 times the registration fee that a 40-50 MPG hybird pays.

rndmind··on Ask HN: What makes you optimistic about the future?
Massive offshore wind turbines

Hydrogen fuel-cell trains https://www.worldfinance.com/strategy/canadian-pacific-on-tr...

Tesla Plaid 0-60 in 1.9 seconds

Ebikes, super 73's, youngsters riding them

microtransactions and trustless decentralized databases (ethereum)

podcasts, and uncensored scientific and civilized communication

The list goes on, the future still looks good if you ignore the mass media

rndmind··on Inflation at 9.1% in June
In the case of the recent wildly sharp increase in consumer prices is caused by lower supply of goods... not by increase of money supply.

If the demand stays the same, the supply goes down... then the price will go up.

It's pretty common sense if you think about supply and demand, but I am perplexed at the amount of people that don't practice any critical thought, let alone skepticism.

rndmind··on The euro has tumbled near parity to the US dollar
Are you arguing that the ruble is more stable place to store your money than the Euro?
rndmind··on DevOps is a failure
Today's shit has 10x or 100x more throughput, it makes sense that upgrading data response and availability requires more people.

But, todays devops has become a proprietary mix of aws protocols, constantly changing standards and languages.

I still use bash scripting wherever I can, it is much more simple and has been ultimately unchanged for decades, which is nice for compatibility

rndmind··on FDA Denies Petition to Ban All Phthalates in Food Packaging
Anti-GMO is tantamount to being against the extreme overuse of pestisides and herbicides, being anti-GMO is actually rooted in evidence as well as common sense... I don't want my strawberries or my corn bathed in round-up ready. Even if the corn does grow larger... glyphosate is bad.
rndmind··on Japan asteroid probe finds 23 amino acids, researchers confirm
> More than 500 naturally occurring amino acids are known [..exist], although only 22 appear in the genetic code.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amino_acid

So, the article doesn't list which amino acids were found, except one, glutamic acid. The real question is, which amino acids were found.

rndmind··on Why are nuclear power construction costs so high?
Consider how new the industry is, this comment is an hilarious load of logical fallacies
rndmind··on I Miss RSS
The quote I knew is actually not 30, it's 35.
rndmind··on Tesla Subjects Women to ‘Rampant Sexual Harassment,’ Suit Says
shrugs sometimes you have to choose your battles
rndmind··on SpaceX will ‘hopefully’ launch first orbital Starship flight in January
You speak in absolutes, but the world is not black and white.

Look at the publicly funded Bell Labs in the 1940's - 1970's

They invented everything from the transister, tcp/ip, C language, satellites, cellphones, and the list goes on ... they were not-for-profit because the government allowed ma bell to be a government sponsored monopoly.

Look at that incredible work done, which would not have occurred if they had been forced to churn a profit each and every quarter.

It is a tragedy what happened to Bell Labs when they finally were cut off from being a non-profit in he mid 1970's. The shell of Bell Labs remains, iirc the buildings are now owned by Nokia, but it is a very sad result for the company that pioneered our modern society.

A great book on Bell Labs is called The Idea Factory, highly recommend that.

rndmind··on Tesla Subjects Women to ‘Rampant Sexual Harassment,’ Suit Says
I agree with the other posters, that evidence is extremely weak and it makes you look like the boy who cried wolf.
rndmind··on Lemmy Release v0.14.0: Federation with Mastodon and Pleroma
That's true, compiling rust is harsh, but we're are talking about server admins and sysadmins here, I have faith that sysadmins will know how to compile and deploy rust.

TIL the Lemmy Server code is written in rust, hell yeah

rndmind··on ConstitutionDAO
I think of it as a homage to the U.S. constitution actually. I respect your sentiment as it seems we are both coming from the same perspective. I, however, look at this not as a parody, but an incredible tribute and homage o the U.S. constitution.... If it brings attention to the constitution and bill of rights, so much the better. Besides, they will feature it in a public museum ( presumably ) so they will honor it and preserve it.
rndmind··on Lemmy Release v0.14.0: Federation with Mastodon and Pleroma
What do you mean, inflexibility? The regex is right there for a server admin to edit or disable, that's as flexible as it gets hah..
rndmind··on ConstitutionDAO
this whole project is organized by a bunch of kids for fun, chill out and relax your butt cheeks dude
rndmind··on Does QE Cause Wealth Inequality?
I'm actually borrowing that from a podcast I listened to, [ a really good listen here, yewtu.be/watch?v=YyprUlzIpog he mentions this point at 20 minutes 10 seconds ... ]

He surmises that the government will encourage the FED to preserve QE until the baby-boomers are finally set and retired. Then the FED will 'get religion' and taper down

rndmind··on Does QE Cause Wealth Inequality?
Quantitative Easing will continue on until all the boomers are happily retired. Give it another 3-6 years, then the Fed is going to "get religion" and you will want to hold hard assets. Until then... its stocks and crypto on a moon mission.
rndmind··on UV light and mildew: why physical objects degrade over time
You seem like you already have your mind made up, and you already know what people are going to suggest ahead of time! I wish I could predict the future like that . . . As others have pointed out, m-disks will preserve your data hundreds of years, but I personally use a RAID array. Of course in 50 years there will still be dvd readers, don't be overly alarmist.
rndmind··on Ask HN: How is the “metaverse” concept different from the Second Life boom?
I'm with him in that. And I am glad I am able to clarify this for you, Android OS is built upon a FOSS project ( AOSP ) and that is by and large the most popular OS in the world. There's ton of community projects that prove that millions use and contribute to FOSS mobile software.

Oh and there's no way in hell this corny Horizon Workrooms will ever, ever take off.

To me, Meta is a more nefarious hint at the collection and backroom sale of users' metadata.

rndmind··on Grand jury subpoena for Signal user data, Central District of California
As other posters have pointed out, the onus is not on signal to connect a phone number with a person's physcal address. Besides, what about burner phone numbers, silly...
rndmind··on Cryptocurrency loan platform implodes in $130M hack
Flash loans are a software exploit, rather a vulnerability within the "economic" system of the platform. Flash loans are simply fascinating, but if this is the third time this happened to this platform, they deserve what they got.

Also, that method man song is awesome, I can't believe I haven't heard of that until now. Crypto rules everything around me! Cream!

rndmind··on Scottish islands produce 30% excess clean energy, turn it into hydrogen
you realize of course, eventually the tanker will be fueled with hydrogen..?
rndmind··on Facebook's Hiring Crisis: Engineers Are Turning Down Offers
I think I found the facebook employee :)
rndmind··on Bitcoin is largely controlled by a small group of investors and miners
Unless of course, ECSDA gets hacked... then the new "gold" immediately drops to zero value.

And I say that as a bitcoin and eth proponent and long time holder. I'm just saying, we should be careful before we jump to conclusions this is still experimental technology ( even encryption itself is still young, and implementation is very prone to error )

rndmind··on 1k Netflix employees threaten work stoppage over Dave Chappelle
What is this, hackernews... TMZ?!
rndmind··on Microsoft Security Analyst Claims Office 365 Knowingly Hosted Malware for Years
Oh yeah I can vouch for this, many malicious sites are hosted on Microsoft's own servers like onedrive.

There's not much you can do in terms of IP blocking or domain blocking when microsoft is hosting the malicious webpages from MS servers. It's a challenging issue.

rndmind··on Most Canadians believe Facebook harms their mental health
Don't forget the hostile attempts at monopolizing information access in India and 3rd world countries with INTERNET.org that was so nefarious I was very scared, fortunately india thwarted facebook, inc's malicious plan and rejected it... but internet.org still went on to poison other 3rd world countries like the philippines and indonesia, before their nescient tech industry even had a chance to stop it.

In addition, the nefarious bribery of brazilian telcoms to allow whatsapp to have unlimited and free network bandwidth, so as to out-muscle any competitors.

Indeed, fb did push out PR messages like privacy is dead, although I'd love to cite some source on that... all I want to say is, Privacy isn't dead facebook, you're dead!
