rnts08··on Show HN: Socks Proxy for AI Agents
So far it is full access to everything for the agent, but since the actual socks implementation is a simple go program there's nothing stopping us from adding a dsl or guardrails that the proxies can understand.
rnts08··on Mockup Nvidia GPUs on Linux systems
I was building a hardware monitoring and metrics tool and realized that I have no way to test if I get the right information out from nvidia gpus via nvml metrics without using deployed gpus, so I made a mock gpu driver that allows you to present a gpu in a desired state as a real gpu to a linux system. It creates and overloads the libnvidia.so* files and simply construct a scenario from json that is hot-swappable when it is running.

It is a useful tool and easy to use if you're building monitoring or telemetry for nvidia gpus.

rnts08··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
Since blacksmith labs and phoenix ai - the ai assisted automotive r&d, security and compliance engineering tool has been on the backburner for a while, I've been helping a couple of blockchain projects and built some tools, besides tinkering with my real-time EVM contract and transaction heuristics and classification engine.

- ETH Watchtower: a real-time EVM monitoring tool with heuristics and classification of contracts and transactions: https://ethwatchtower.xyz

- P2P SSL VPN provider/consumer tools using a blockchain as announcement and settlement layer: https://github.com/rnts08/blockchain-vpn

- OrdexNetwork: https://ordexnetwork.org, I've built https://ordexswap.online and https://ordexswap.online/wallet/ as well as an Umbrel variant of a self-hosted wallet.

- Waya Wolf Coin v3: Helped the team to compile binaries for linux, and modernizing the libraries: https://github.com/rnts08/WWC3-Linux-binaries / https://github.com/Waya-Wolf/WWC3

- Low Cap Exchange algorithmic trading bots with machine learning and automatic ghost trading, because I wanted to see what the most common shapes are on smaller exchanges: https://github.com/rnts08/low-cap-exchange-trading-bot

However, I am really looking for Sr. DevOps/Platform Eng/SRE/System/Network Admin/Infra Engineering or similar, full-time or contract work, see https://timhbergstrom.pro for contact details.

rnts08··on The creator of Claude Code's Claude setup
That was one of my first thought as well, but I was thinking that he did it for readability in the post not for real...
rnts08··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Happy new year, 2025 was another bummer but here's to 2026.
rnts08··on Ethereum Watchtower Real-time blockchain analysis
I've built ETH watchtower, a real-time heuristics scanning tool checking contracts, addresses and transactions. The published version is a PoC and cut down since the full version is way too expensive for me to run together with the frontend for public use. If anyone is interested in building with me, hosting full low latency ethereum nodes or help out with the project feel free to reach out.

rnts08··on My second year without a job
What is he supposed to do? I'm absolutely sure he's still looking, trying his best to find a job or a permanent solution to his situation. But there's no reason to complain and whine about things he can't change.

Life is shit sometimes, when he is out, he'll be out. Or he'll find some way of generating income, and then he gets another chance.

I've been in similar situations myself, and there is absolutely no reason to get stuck up regardless how stressful and painful it is, you can only do your best and that's it.

rnts08··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
The worst thing about the whole kubernetes-cult and the like is that IaC and CM was supposed to help us reduce configuration, to make it less prone to failure and easier to manage.

But the truth is that we ran service based architecture, network meshes and containers with bash just fine before cloud everything, usually with less effort than it is to do literally anything today. Sure you had to know how to set up network bonding and how to tune your systems.

Very, very few people and businesses _needs_ kubernetes or it's cousins. Most just need a decent system administrator.

rnts08··on I quit Google to work for myself (2018)
Congratulations, OP learned about "we expect loyalty and effort from you, but you won't get any from us", which is 99.5% of all companies out there. I hope OP does well on their own and don't have to work in this kind of disingenuous places in the future.
rnts08··on My Time Working at Stripe
This is spot on.

Thank you for pointing it out.

rnts08··on Security research on Private Cloud Compute
Anyone assuming otherwise is just foolish. No mega-corp is protecting the individuals privacy when developing products.
rnts08··on iOS 18.2 Lets EU Users Delete App Store, Safari, Messages, Camera and Photos
Great first step, now if we could just get apple hardware without apple software and get full access to the subsystems with a linux or android instead of the iOS/OSx slop, even I would consider paying for it.
rnts08··on How Discord stores trillions of messages (2023)
Anyone wanting to introduce $new/$other language, database, library, deployment system, build system into a large enough system that doesn't solve any actual problem is a nightmare for someone working at this scale.

I don't mind the scale, I like it. I don't like having to fend off questions and complaints why we aren't deploying the latest shiny new thing in our core this week.

rnts08··on GitHub notification emails used to send malware
It's quite sad that in 2024 we still have people falling for the simplest tricks.

This is almost as easy as it was to call someone and asking them for the number of the modem on their desk and their logins back in the bad old days.

Considering the target platform I'm not overly surprised though.

rnts08··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
A lot of companies are speed running "How to lose your best engineers any%" lately. Yes, there are times for face to face but forcing people back to the office just to justify their space cost and middle managers meddling is a path to failure.
rnts08··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
Yes, LI 10-15 years ago was a decent site for professional networking, before it got too much like social media. Looking for work, get in touch with or keep in touch with people that you share professional interests with.

I guess it wouldn't be technically challenging to create a platform for this, the problem would be to bring the right users and as you say, moderate the content to avoid what it has become today.

Show your certificates? Amazing!

Selfie with some half-assed inspirational "leader" quote? No!

rnts08··on LinkedIn blocked due Meshtastic video in private chat
We absolutely need a better platform for professional networking. A platform that's not filled with people who dislocate their shoulders trying to pat themselves on the back for some "inspirational" social media babble about the last time they managed to send an email.
rnts08··on CrowdStrike ex-employees: 'Quality control was not part of our process'
But then you can't blame anyone else when shit hits the fan! Isn't that what you're really paying for with EDR? No one is safe from a targeted attack, regardless of software.

rnts08··on Vulnerabilities in the Feeld dating app
This is unfortunately quite common in mobile apps, because "why would a user look closer in a mobile app".

I want to blame juniors, the no-code and ai-code crowd, but I'm as lazy as they are and will just shake my head and move on.

rnts08··on Continuous reinvention: A brief history of block storage at AWS
This gives me fond memories of building storage-as-a-service infrastructure back before we had useful opensource stuff, moving away from sun san, fibrechannel and solaris we landed on glusterfs on supermicro storage servers, running linux and nfs. We peaked almost 2Pb before I moved on in 2007.

Secondly it reminds me of the time when it simply made sense to ninja-break and rebuild mdraids with ssds in-place of the spinning drives WHILE the servers were running (sata kind of supported hotswapping the drives). Going from spinning to ssd gave us a 14x increase in IOPS in the most important system of the platform.

rnts08··on Why won't some people pay for news? (2022)
If news were 100% neutral and delivered without ads/product placements and could be 100% trusted, I'm sure there are people who would pay for it.

"News" as it is presented today is not a "product" that anyone should pay for.

rnts08··on The Origins of DS_store (2006)
Very commonly used to hide malware and other things you don't want the average user or windows admin to find.

rnts08··on A ChatGPT mistake cost us $10k
This gets more and more common, companies and founders does not think about the infrastructure since they believe that their cloud provider of choice is going to do it for them with it's magic.

As soon as you expect paying customers in your system you need to have someone with the knowledge and experience to deal with infrastructure. That means logging, monitoring, alerting, security etc.

DevOps.. amateurs.

rnts08··on Google Maps is killing Timeline for Web
Words of wisdom.
rnts08··on Heroku Postgres is now based on AWS Aurora
AWS Can't bill you on 0 usage.
rnts08··on Heroku Postgres is now based on AWS Aurora
Everything on Heroku is billed with a huge margin, plus as they're probably a partnered customer by now their pricing is a fraction of the average AWS customers pricing. I've been at companies on both sides of the partner pricing list and the difference is huge.
