robchez··on Amazon Flow appears on the iPhone
FYI - Not available in Australian App Store.
robchez··on Apple's 'Let's Talk iPhone' keynote liveblog
most people bought the iPhone 4 on a 24 month contract, those people probably wont by the iPhone 4S due to the high cost of early termination fees for little gain. (of course some people will which is just a bonus).

This cycle is pretty clever as it pretty much guarentees majority of iPhone 4 holders will upgrade to iPhone 5, whilst simaltanously giving a decent bump in sales to people who have had there friends talking up the iPhone 4 for a year a chance to one-up them.

robchez··on Toxic Nectar Kills 90% of Mosquito Populations
Damn I should of applied for the grant. I use a similar system to kill fruit flys around my various fruit trees.

Quick How-to

1. Cut 600ml bottle.

2. Invert top into opening (see pic).

3. Tape with red and yellow (i read somewhere that fruit flys are attracted to it)

4. Fill with something 'sweet', some honey or even apple cider vinegar.

5. Add a dash of detergent. (maybe some white oil)

6. Hang on fruit tree near fruit.

The flys go in, they land on the mixture, detergent sticks to them and they drown.

I have never seen a bee in there.

Easily the best biography I have ever read. If you don't like biographys, this will change your mind.

robchez··on Wikileaks Takes Down the Head of Al Jazeera
We expect the trend in favor of using Al Jazeera as an informal tool of GOQ foreign policy to continue undiminished.[1]

robchez··on Wikileaks Takes Down the Head of Al Jazeera
Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani is the chairman of the board.

Sheikh Ahmad bin Jassim bin Mohammad Al Thani has been appointed as new director general.

Also[1] : The U.S. State Department clearly views Al Jazeera as a tool of Qatar's foreign policy; one cable from November 2009 claims that the Persian Gulf state uses the channel "as a bargaining tool to repair relationships with other countries, particularly those soured by al-Jazeera's broadcasts, including the United States." Al Jazeera devotes suspiciously little time to covering the politics of the Gulf; for instance, after Qatar's rapprochement with Saudi Arabia, criticism of the Saudi royal family dropped dramatically.

Really great.

robchez··on African Entrepreneurs Are Making Ghana Into a Tech Startup Hub
Ghana is very pro-business. I have worked on several mining projects in the country. I really hope it can set an example for the rest of Africa.
robchez··on 9800 Feet Underground at Kidd Creek Mine in Northern Ontario, Canada
Design software. Forget the scheduling and geology software, its managed by the big guys.

Every mining/mechanical engineer I know uses a collection of spreadsheets they have created/collated. It's cumbersome, its crap, its error prone.

* Materials Handling (Conveyor design etc.)

* Pumping (Dewatering, supply lines etc.)

Other areas which need serious shakeup are drawing and document control. There are junior miners starting every other week and if you can sell your software to them from the beginning to manage there document/drawing control you are set for at least 5-10 years of service/subscripton revenue as well.

robchez··on 9800 Feet Underground at Kidd Creek Mine in Northern Ontario, Canada
I am a Mining/Mechanical Project engineer and have had the extreme pleasure of visiting a lot of these underground operations (although Kidd is still on the bucket list!)

Due to precious and base metal prices as they are, there are a lot of mining deposits that were once not viable, but now seem quite profitable. There is a huge push to deeper levels and this is leading to some awesome engineering advances in the field (that I am proud to be a part of).

Mining is a market for hackers waiting to be tapped(!). This industry pushes two things, safety and efficiency. These mines work 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, any loss of work costs serious money. If you could develop software to have mines be both safer and more efficient, you have a signed pay check.

robchez··on Counting Calories? Your Weight-Loss Plan May Be Outdated
that's great you lost weight, but for me, and i assume others, counting calories is just another thing to think about in life.

forget the grass-fed butter, i shouldn't have added it in. the reason i said decent amount, is because it's not a quantitive amount. have a steak or some chicken every day.

a good diet is one that has the least work and you can stick with for life.

Eat lots of fat, some protein, little carbs.

robchez··on Counting Calories? Your Weight-Loss Plan May Be Outdated
get rid of the carbs and sugar, amp up the red meat and lose the peanut butter. Keep fruits on the lowish side, eat whatever vegetables you want.

Meat. You would be surprised how nutritionally dense a good steak is!
robchez··on Counting Calories? Your Weight-Loss Plan May Be Outdated
as per a post below the reason i shy away from grains/legumes are due to their lectins/protease inhibitors/phytates.

Sprouting them may limit these issues, but for me, healthy carbs are sweet potatos and some white rice now and then.

robchez··on Counting Calories? Your Weight-Loss Plan May Be Outdated
this has got to do more with health rather than weight loss i guess.

legumes have 3 things that suck - lectins, protease inhibitors and phytates

lectins - known to cause inflammation and have been show to cause gut permeability which is followed by auto-immune type diseases.

protease inhibitors intefere with the breakdown of proteins into amino acids

phytates have been shown to inhibit mineral absorption

Society doesn't understand thanks to the government pushing the food pyramid/plate down their throats and the low-fat diet crud.

Check out a cross-fit gym anywhere and see if you can find the pand-bear-shaped folks.

robchez··on Counting Calories? Your Weight-Loss Plan May Be Outdated
I really wish the count calories, calories in = calories out, calorie is just a calorie mantra would just go away and die.

The idea that your body has no clue as to what type (fat, protein, carb) of you're eating is stupid.

I have advised nearly everyone in my family as well as lots of friends and colleagues to weight loss success with the following simple rules:

1. Get rid of grains, legumes and sugars

2. Eat healthy fats (coconut oil, lard, tallow grass-fed butters)

3. Eat a decent amount of protein from meat sources.

4. Lower your carbs overall (this is sort of automatic as you will not feel as hungry if you eat plenty of fats and protein)

5. Eat to satiety

Also, you don't need to go for runs, or exercise to lose weight. It's great for your overall health, but if you are overweight and the thought of exercise is stopping you, then forget it and just change your diet.

As an aside, if anyone else wants further advice please feel free to ask.

robchez··on Are grains making us fat? If so, we should be much thinner than 1914.
not really, fructose no matter the form is ot broken down in the gut so its shunted to the liver (much like other toxins). There it does all sorts of crazy stuff.

Modern fruit (due to selective breeding) is ultra sweet with what I can assume were pretty bland flavored fruit back in the day. Natures Candy.

robchez··on Are grains making us fat? If so, we should be much thinner than 1914.
Diet >> Gym You burn a lot of calories in a day, the extra little you burn from exercise is moot if you are scoffing down the wrong food.
robchez··on Are grains making us fat? If so, we should be much thinner than 1914.
Fruit fructose is just as bad as the fructose found in HFCS.
robchez··on The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast
Straight after. I will train, have a shower then eat. My window is generally 4-8 hours depending how full I get.

I have seen only improvement in my lifts since I started this regimen. Lost some serious bodyfat % whilst gained muscle.

robchez··on The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast
jump on the stationary bike and go at a slow pace (60-65% max heartrate).

I have seen this work wonders on countless people.
